49ers | Klay Kubiak officially named San Fran OC Wed Feb 26, 09:29 AM
Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers offensive passing game specialist Klay Kubiak officially was named offense coordinator on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
Footballguys view: Kyle Shanahan is going to call plays for the 49ers as per usual, but Kubiak is going to now be credited as the coordinator. He began his coaching tenure as a defensive quality control coach with the 49ers in 2021. Now, Kubiak is an OC with buzz around him as a rising star and a potential head coaching candidate...if the 49ers get things right on the offensive side of the ball in 2025. |
San Francisco 49ers senior offensive assistant Mick Lombardi was named quarterbacks coach Tuesday, Feb. 25, officially replacing Brian Griese.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers OL Ben Bartch agreed to a one-year contract extension, the team announced Monday, Feb. 24. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.
Link to storyThe San Francisco 49ers may consider releasing WR Deebo Samuel before his option bonus is due March 22, and designating him as a post-June 1 cut, according to Dan Graziano of ESPN.com. Under this scenario, the 49ers would have a dead cap hit of approximately $10.75 million in 2025 and about $20.8 million in 2026.
Footballguys view: Earlier this month, the 49ers gave Samuel permission to look for a trade but nothing has come to fruition. Now that it looks like nobody wants to trade for Samuel, the 49ers are looking at releasing him. We'll see if anything heats up in a potential trade market as teams get together at the Combine this week. |

San Francisco 49ers exclusive rights free-agent DT Evan Anderson, DE Alex Barrett, LB Jalen Graham, DE Sam Okuayinonu, OT Austen Pleasants, TE Jake Tonges and TE Brayden Willis have officially received one-year tender offers from the 49ers.

New York Jets impending free-agent LB Jamien Sherwood could receive interest from the San Francisco 49ers if he hits the free-agent market, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler.

San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel is receiving trade interest from multiple teams, but teams may consider waiting to see if the 49ers will release Samuel at some point if they can find a trade, according to ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler.

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel said he has received permission from the team to seek a trade this offseason.
Footballguys view: Samuel requested a trade during his exit meetings with the team after the season. "It was a hard conversation to have with [head coach] Kyle [Shanahan] because of our relationship," Samuel said on Sunday. "But I have to do what's best. I'm more than thankful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, but now I think it's best that we find another team." Samuel and the 49ers are coming off a disappointing 2024 campaign. The team finished 6-11, and Samuel endured one of his least productive seasons, tallying just 806 scrimmage yards and four total touchdownsâ€"his lowest totals since an injury-plagued 2020 season. There are plenty of receiver-needy teams, so we'll be watching to see what kind of interest Samuel draws. |

The San Francisco 49ers are expected to explore trading WR Deebo Samuel this offseason, according to multiple sources. While it is not certain that Samuel will play somewhere else next season, both sides appear to be at peace if they go their separate ways.
Footballguys view: Samuel is only due $1.17 million in salary next year as the 49ers restructured his contract in 2024. He doesn't play a traditional wide receiver role, but Samuel is only 29 and at that price, there should be multiple teams interested. Brandon Aiyuk will be coming back from an ACL tear and Jauan Jennings showed that he can be a #1 receiver for Brock Purdy last year, so the passing game would be in good shape even if Samuel is traded. The team reportedly had both Samuel and Aiyuk on the block last year before signing Aiyuk to a new contract, so this item isn't a surprise. |

San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy is expected to start contract extension talks with the 49ers in the near future, and the talks likely will not drag out until training camp since both sides seem interested in agreeing to a deal, in the opinion of The Athletic's Dianna Russini.
Footballguys view: The 49ers are trying to keep the core together to make another run, but now they'll be off Purdy's incredibly affordable rookie contract. Russini has reported that Purdy could "wind up" with a contract worth $55 to $60 million per season. That would make him a top-5 paid player at his position. A pretty cool outcome for a guy who was the last pick in the NFL draft a few years ago. |
Former Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Gus Bradley is joining the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff in an unspecified role, according to sources Friday, Feb. 4.
Footballguys view: New (and old) 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh was on Bradley's staff previously in Seattle during the Legion of Boom days and then in Jacksonville when Bradley was a head coach, so this is a reunion. Bradley's defense fizzled out in Indianapolis, but he should be an asset in a smaller role in San Francisco as the 49ers try to bounce back from a down year. |
Dianna Russini, from The Athletic, thinks San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy could â€"wind up†with a contract worth $55 to $60 million per season.
Footballguys view: The price tag would make Purdy a top-5 quarterback in terms of annual average salary. That sounds about right for the market, and the 49ers will try to make it further with this group of players. Purdy will have gone from the last pick in the draft to one of the highest-paid players in the NFL. |
Former Carolina Panthers assistant defensive backs coach DeAngelo Hall is scheduled to interview with the San Francisco 49ers regarding their defensive backs coach vacancy next week, according to a source.

Former New York Jets special teams coordinator Brant Boyer was hired by the San Francisco 49ers Monday, Jan. 27, as their new special teams coordinator.
Footballguys view: Head coach Kyle Shanahan fired special teams coordinator Brian Schneider following a season in which mistakes in the kicking game contributed to a 6-11 record. He found a proven option in Boyer that he hopes can provide needed improvement to a unit that finished last in the league in expected points added on special teams and near the bottom of nearly all efficiency stats involved with the kicking game. The 53-year-old Boyer ran the special teams for the Jets for the past nine seasons under three full-time head coaches. Boyer led a special teams unit that ranked tied for second with nine touchdowns scored, second with eight blocked punts, and tied for fifth in kick return coverage. |
Confirming a previous report, the San Francisco 49ers officially announced the hiring of former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh has their new defensive coordinator Friday, Jan. 24.
Footballguys view: He had previously served in the same role with the 49ers from 2017 to 2021. Saleh is an upgrade for the 49ers, and he could work his way back into the head coaching conversation (in the future) if things go well during the 2025 season. |
Free-agent S Quindell Johnson (Rams) signed a one-year Reserve/Futures deal with the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Link to storyDetroit Lions assistant special teams coach Jett Modkins interviewed with the San Francisco 49ers regarding their special teams coordinator opening on Sunday, Jan. 12.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle led all tight ends with 14.2 yards per reception this season.
Footballguys view: Kittle took his game to another level this season. With WR Brandon Aiyuk banged up, Kittle was tasked with doing more and he responded with over 1,100 yards receiving - including four 100-yard games. He is a warrior and should be in for another big year in 2025, although Kittle is likely to miss a little time as per usual. |

Former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh interviewed for the defensive coordinator vacancy with the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, Jan. 9.
Footballguys view: Saleh came from the 49ers before he was head coach of the Jets. He's a great coach with a bright mind for defensive football. The 49ers need answers to multiple questions this offseason. Hiring Saleh could be the answer they need to solve their defensive woes. |
San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel is expected to be part of the team next season, according to general manager John Lynch.
Footballguys view: There are plenty of rumors that Samuel could be on the trade block this offseason, but the reality is that the 49ers would have a difficult time moving him. Even as a post-June 1 cut, Samuel would count $30 million in dead money spread over two years. |

San Francisco 49ers special teams coordinator Brian Schneider was fired Tuesday, Jan. 7, according to sources.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen was relieved of his duties on Tuesday, Jan. 7, although the team is interested in keeping him on staff as a position coach.
Footballguys view: Sorensen was promoted to defensive coordinator with the 49ers a year ago, after Steve Wilks was fired. Reports indicate the 49ers want to retain Sorensen, but it won't be in the same role. We'll see if he wants to stick with the team or move on for other possibilities. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (knee) said he is nearly fully recovered from his knee injury and believes he would have been available for the playoffs if the 49ers clinched a spot. He said he will be able to participate in organized team activities.
Footballguys view: McCaffrey appeared in only four games this season. He missed the first eight due to Achilles tendinitis and the last five after a PCL injury. McCaffrey expects to be ready for next season and is eager to return to his NFL Offensive Player of the Year form. When asked about his initial Achilles injury and if it has calmed down enough to no longer be a concern for the 2025 season, McCaffrey responded, "Yeah, a hundred percent." He isn't sure what triggered the initial injury but downplayed speculation that he overworked himself last offseason. Tweaking his offseason workout regimen remains a work in progress, as he hopes to avoid a recurrence this year. McCaffrey admitted that the second injury, which sidelined him for the remainder of the season, was "incredibly hard" to handle. Fantasy managers who invested their first pick overall in the star running back feel the same. We'll be monitoring McCaffrey's progress all offseason. |

San Francisco 49ers RB Isaac Guerendo (ankle, knee) was carted off in the first half of the Week 18 game against the Arizona Cardinals due to an ankle and knee injury and he was quickly ruled out. He had two rushes for five yards before departing. RB Patrick Taylor is expected to handle the lion's share of the carries down the stretch.
Footballguys view: Guerendo flashed in spot starts late in the season, but this kind of injury could affect his availability early next season if it is serious. He's still a dynasty hold after he showed his speed will translate in the 49ers running game, but this was a very unfortunate way for his season to end. |

San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings had seven receptions for 52 yards on 10 targets in Week 18 against the Arizona Cardinals before being ejected in the second quarter for a second personal foul.
Footballguys view: Jennings was just a few yards short of his first 1000 yard season. It was still a big time breakout season for him, and he could be a starter next season if the team parts way with Deebo Samuel coming off of a down year. |
