Raiders | Vegas emerging as option for Matthew Stafford Wed Feb 26, 09:29 AM
Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford and his representation have reportedly been in contact with Las Vegas Raiders minority owner Tom Brady in recent days, according to multiple sources. Per Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Raiders have 'a massive need at quarterback and want to address it this offseason,' which makes it possible the team is willing to meet Stafford's contract demands at a level the Rams are not.
Footballguys view: The Raiders have been rumored to be in on Stafford as they look for a starting quarterback. This makes four teams (Steelers, Browns, Giants) as possible teams that trade for Stafford...if he's available. The latest in this saga has the Rams keeping Stafford. Who knows what his future holds, so stay tuned. |

Las Vegas Raiders S Isaiah Pola-Mao agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $8.5 million, according to sources Monday, Feb. 24.
Link to storyLas Vegas Raiders QB Gardner Minshew is a candidate to be released this offseason, in the opinion of The Athletic's Tashan Reed. According to Spotrac, the Raiders would only free up $3 million of salary cap space and take a dead money hit of $10.82 million if he is released prior to June 1. However, if he is let go after that date, Las Vegas would free up $6 million in cap space and be able to spread the dead money hit over two seasons, with $7.82 million being applied in 2025 and the remaining amount in 2026.

Las Vegas Raiders impending free-agent S Tre'von Moehrig is expected to receive interest from multiple teams if he hits the free-agent market, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Paul Gutierrez.

Free-agent WR Kyle Philips (Eagles) signed an undisclosed deal with the Las Vegas Raiders, the team announced Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Link to storyLas Vegas Raiders impending free-agent LB Robert Spillane likely will be one of the top candidates that the Raiders will look to re-sign this offseason, in the opinion of RaidersWire's Levi Damien.
Link to storyLas Vegas Raiders DE Maxx Crosby (ankle) told Vegas Sports Today that he is 'in a great place right now' and expects to be out of a walking boot on Monday, Feb. 17. Crosby underwent surgery on his ankle in mid-December after suffering multiple injuries to it throughout the 2024 season.

Former Chicago Bears wide receivers coach Chris Beatty was officially hired to the same position by the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday, Feb. 11. New England Patriots tight ends coach Bob Bicknell was named as a senior offensive assistant, Carolina Panthers pass game coordinator Nate Carroll was hired as the assistant quarterbacks coach, former Cleveland Browns offensive line coach Andy Dickerson was named as the assistant offensive line coach and Appalachian State assistant offensive line coach Kyle X. Fuller was hired as the offensive quality control coach. Notre Dame run-game coordinator/running back coach Deland McCullough will coach the running backs and former Seattle Seahawks quarterbacks coach Greg Olson and ex-Houston Texans assistant defensive line coach Kenyon Jackson will take on the same responsibilities with Las Vegas. University of North Carolina defensive analyst Tyrone McKenzie will serve as a defensive assistant and linebackers coach, former New Orleans Saints secondary coach Marcus Robertson was named as the defensive backs coach, Georgia Southern defensive line coach Rip Rowan was hired to be a defensive assistant and Ohio State offensive assistant Sean Binckes was hired to assume the same position with the Raiders.

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold could be a target for the Las Vegas Raiders during free agency, in the opinion of ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Footballguys view: Many of the teams that will be looking at the top two draft quarterbacks will also be looking at Darnold, so we should get a slight narrowing of the field of possible teams for Colorado's Shadeur Sanders or Miami's Cam Ward. Darnold landing with new Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly would be a bit of a wild card as Kelly's offensive approach has changed a lot since he was with the Eagles as a head coach and then went back to the college level. |

Former Seattle Seahawks quarterbacks coach Greg Olson is being hired by the Las Vegas Raiders as their new quarterbacks coach, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Olson, 61, was with the Raiders as offensive coordinator from 2013-2014 and 2018-2021. As Profootballtalk.com notes, Olson initially didn't call plays during his second stint but took over that role after former head coach Jon Gruden abruptly resigned early on in the 2021 season. Las Vegas finished No. 11 in yards and No. 18 in points scored that season, earning a postseason berth at 10-7. Olson previously worked under new Raiders head coach Pete Carroll in 2023 with the Seahawks as the team's QBs coach. In his long career as an NFL assistant, Olson has also worked with the 49ers, Bears, Lions, Rams, Bucs, and Jaguars. |
University of Washington offensive coordinator Brennan Carroll is being hired by the Las Vegas Raiders to fill their offensive line coach and run-game coordinator vacancies, according to sources Monday, Feb. 3.
Footballguys view: Carroll, the son of Raiders head coach Pete Carroll, served as Washington's offensive coordinator in 2024 and held the same role under coach Jedd Fisch with Arizona in 2022 and 2023. He worked under Pete Carroll with the Seattle Seahawks from 2015 to 2020, serving as the team's assistant offensive line coach and then run game coordinator. Brennan Carroll coached tight ends at USC under his father from 2004 to 2009. |
Updating previous reports, Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly signed a deal that will pay him nearly $6 million annually and becomes one of the highest-paid coordinators in the league.
Footballguys view: Kelly previously coached Oregon and UCLA at the college level and the Eagles and 49ers in the NFL. He is 81-41 as a college coach and 28-35 in the NFL. Kelly's Oregon offenses were often some of the most productive in the country. In 2013 and 2014, Kelly's Eagles teams were 10-6 each season and had the fourth- and third-highest-scoring offenses in the league with Nick Foles, Michael Vick, and Mark Sanchez as his QBs. The Raiders still need to find their QB of the future, but Kelly's history of success with lesser signal callers is worth noting. |
Las Vegas Raiders line coach Rob Leonard will remain with the team after the team added run-game coordinator to his title on Saturday, Feb. 1.
Footballguys view: Pete Carroll has kept Patrick Graham as defensive coordinator and Tom McMahon as special teams coordinator from Antonio Pierce's staff, and now he'll keep Leonard, which is another good sign that Maxx Crosby isn't going anywhere, since Leonard coached his position group. Now, we'll wait to see who Carroll brings him to coach the offense. |
Seattle Seahawks vice president of coaching operations Matt Capurro is expected to assume a similar position for the Las Vegas Raiders under new head coach Pete Carroll.
Link to storyLas Vegas Raiders DE Maxx Crosby, amid swirling trade rumors, said he likes the hire of head coach Pete Carroll. 'I want to win every year,' Crosby said. 'That's the competition in me, and I see that in him.'
Footballguys view: Everything is a competition with Carroll running the show. Crosby is the ultimate competitor, so he obviously like the fit with the Raiders. He will be coming back from season-ending ankle surgery, but having a motivated Crosby is nothing but a good thing for a Raiders team searching for an identity. |

Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham reportedly re-signed with the team after considering other defensive coordinator positions and taking multiple head coaching interviews elsewhere, according to sources. Terms of the new contract were not immediately disclosed.
Link to storyLas Vegas Raiders special teams coordinator Tom McMahon will remain on the staff under new head coach Pete Carroll, according to sources Wednesday, Jan. 29.
Footballguys view: McMahon, 55, has been with the Raiders since 2022, when Josh McDaniels was hired as head coach. Former head coach Antonio Pierce retained him when he got the full-time top job in 2024. McMahon has previously been with the Rams, Chiefs, Colts, and Broncos as special teams coordinator. He was also an assistant with the Falcons. |
Miami Dolphins quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Darrell Bevell interviewed with the Las Vegas Raiders regarding their offensive coordinator vacancy on Tuesday, Jan. 28. According to multiple sources, Bevell is believed to be the Raiders' first choice for the job.
Footballguys view: Bevell was new Raiders head coach Pete Carroll's offensive coordinator in Seattle for eight seasons, and the two won a Super Bowl together. This would be an easy connection for Carroll who has his work cut out for him in Sin City. If/when hired, the Raiders then have to find some sort of answer for their starting quarterback job. |
Seattle Seahawks defensive passing game coordinator Karl Scott was requested by the Las Vegas Raiders to interview for their defensive coordinator opening.
Link to storyTampa Bay Buccaneers assistant general manager John Spytek was officially hired by the Las Vegas Raiders Friday, Jan. 24, to be their new general manager.
Footballguys view: Spytek is a long time personnel guy with a sterling reputation. He went to the Buccaneers and helped assemble a team that won a Super Bowl with Tom Brady at quarterback. Brady is a part owner in the Raiders, and he clearly trusts Spytek's proven eye for talent. Spytek will work closely with new HC Pete Carroll to find the best talent the Raiders can get. |
Impending free-agent QB Russell Wilson (Steelers) might be of interest as a stop-gap quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders, according to a source. Per the source, Wilson and new head coach Pete Carroll have 'mended fences' from their time together with the Seattle Seahawks.
Footballguys view: After seeing how things went for the Steelers passing game this season, it's hard to say this would be good for Brock Bowers, but it could be worse than catching passes from Russell Wilson. The new general manager John Spytek will also need to decide whether to trade up for a quarterback, either Miami's Cam Ward or Colorado's Shadeur Sanders. |

Former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was hired by the Las Vegas Raiders as head coach Friday, Jan. 24. He received a three-year deal with a fourth-year option.
Footballguys view: The Raiders were considered front runners to hire Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson a week ago, but Johnson chose the Bears, so the Raiders are going with a familiar face. The team should have a strong defensive identity under Carroll, and this could also quiet talk of trading Maxx Crosby. There is some talk that Russell Wilson may be the quarterback, as he and Carroll have mended their relationship after it ended badly in Seattle. Carroll will go back to facing Jim Harbaugh at least twice a season after the two had one of the NFL best rivalries when they were with the Seahawks and 49ers. |
Free-agent WR Alex Bachman signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Las Vegas Raiders Thursday, Jan. 23. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Updating previous reports, former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh is scheduled to interview for the Las Vegas Raiders head coaching position on Friday, Jan. 17. He is also expected to meet with the Dallas Cowboys over the next few days.
Footballguys view: In the ever-changing landscape of head coach hire buzz, Ben Johnson is gaining steam in the Raiders picture, so this might not result in much for Saleh. The Cowboys aren't being as aggressive with interview scheduling as other teams, and there's a belief that they may already have their choice made, with some signs pointing to Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. The main significance of this item is that Saleh is still thought of as head coach material in some circles (including the Jaguars) despite how his tenure at the Jets went by the W-L metric. |
Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is interviewing with the Las Vegas Raiders for their head coaching vacancy on Thursday, Jan. 16.
Footballguys view: Joseph has done a fantastic job with the Broncos defense, outside of a game or two, over the last two years. He's been a head coach before (with the Broncos) and would likely be better in his second chance. Joseph is known as a leader of men, and his guidance could be what the Raiders feel they need. |
Pittsburgh Steelers director of pro personnel Sheldon White is of interest to the Las Vegas Raiders, who requested to interview him regarding their general manager vacancy on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
Link to storyGreen Bay Packers vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan is of interest to the Las Vegas Raiders, who requested to interview him for their general manager vacancy on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Link to storyDenver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph has been requested for an interview for the Las Vegas Raiders head coaching position.
Link to storyLas Vegas Raiders general manager Tom Telesco was fired on Thursday, Jan. 9.
Footballguys view: The Raiders have now moved on from HC Antonio Pierce and GM Tom Telesco in the last few days. They'll be in the market for both, and there are some interesting combinations they could be considering. Telesco has now been fired as the Chargers GM and the Raiders GM (after one season). |
Green Bay Packers offensive consultant Robert Saleh is expected to interview with the Las Vegas Raiders for their head coach vacancy next week, according to sources Thursday, Jan. 9.
Link to storyFree-agent DT Tyler Manoa signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Las Vegas Raiders Tuesday, Jan. 7. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Link to storyFormer Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen are expected to be 'persons of interest' to replace Antonio Pierce as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, according to Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Footballguys view: Tom Brady is going to be heavily involved in the search for a new head coach. In addition to finding a leader for the coaching staff, the Raiders must find a quarterback. It's all about 'fit' between head coach and quarterback, and the Raiders may only be able to get one of those properly installed this offseason. |

Another change in Las Vegas: Raiders fired head coach Antonio Pierce, a source tells ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Footballguys view: The Raiders, who have confirmed the news, now have gone from Jon Gruden, who resigned in 2021, to Josh McDaniels, who was fired in 2023, to firing Pierce in 2025. Owner Mark Davis arrived at the team facility within the last hour to deliver the news to Pierce, who finished 4-13 in his lone season. The Raiders endured a 10-game losing streak during Pierce's only season as full-time head coach. It was also the first time they went winless against AFC West opponents since 2006. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, several players continued to voice support for Pierce after the season, and he admitted he should have trusted his "gut" more. However, ownership has decided he won't get that chance. |
Las Vegas Raiders TE Brock Bowers ranked third in receptions (112) and tied for eighth in receiving yards (1,194) during the 2024 season. He led all tight ends in both categories, also.
Footballguys view: As previously noted, Bowers finished the season with 112 catches in 2024, passing Malik Nabers (109) to officially secure the NFL record for most receptions by a rookie at any position in NFL history. Bowers entered Week 18 with the rookie mark. Nabers briefly passed him Sunday, but Bowers caught four passes in the loss to the Chargers, securing the record. Expect him to be the first tight end off the board in 2025. |
