Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent QB Justin Fields is expected to receive interest from several teams if he hits the free-agent market. The Steelers are still open to re-signing Fields.
Footballguys view: The Steelers are expected to bring back one of Fields or Russell Wilson to start in 2025. Fields has a little more upside if the team builds more plays into the offense to leverage his speed as a runner, and they may be one of the few teams to bring him in as the starter. Fields fantasy value for 2025 is still very much alive. |

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent RB Najee Harris did not have his fifth-year team option picked up by the team last offseason, but Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes there is 'a strong possibility' that he could be signed to a new contract before the start of free agency on March 12.
Footballguys view: Dulac, a long time Steelers beat writer, said there is also a "strong possibility" that the team is going to bring back Najee Harris on a two or three-year deal at between $7-$10 million a season, so the could run back their 2024 backfield even though it is a very strong class at the position in the draft. Last offseason, the team turned down the chance to have Harris under contract for this season for about $6.7 million, so if they do sign him at the terms Dulac laid out, it would be admission that was a mistake even though he might have a lower cap number for 2025 than he would have had under the fifth year option. |

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jaylen Warren is expected to receive a tender offer as a restricted free agent, according to sources Friday, Feb. 4.
Footballguys view: This is an easy call for the Steelers, the only question is whether they use the right of first refusal tender at around $3.2 million, which would give them no compensation if another team signs Warren to offer sheet that they refuse to match, or go up to about $5.2 million to be able to recoup a second round pick if another team signs Warren to an offer sheet, which would effectively lock him up, since that's steep price to pay to steal Warren away, especially in a running back rich draft year. |
Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent QB Russell Wilson said he is focusing on staying with the Steelers and is not looking at other teams.
Footballguys view: The Seahawks loom as a possibility if Wilson ends up on a different team next season. The Steelers are expected to keep one of Wilson and Justin Fields after team owner and president Art Rooney II said as much earlier in the work, but he added that they won't keep both. |

Echoing the words of his head coach, Pittsburgh Steelers owner and president Art Rooney II said talented but mercurial wide receiver George Pickens has "room to grow." Rooney added: "Every team seems to have one or two guys in that room that are -- you have to manage them correctly. I still think George has enough talent that we've got to try to work and see if we can get him to reach his, fulfill the talent that he really has. Who knows if we can get there, we'll see."
Footballguys view: Two weeks earlier, Mike Tomlin acknowledged Pickens had done some growing during the 2024 season, but there was "a heck of a lot more ground to be covered." Though he missed three games with a hamstring injury, Pickens finished the regular season with 900 yards on 59 catches and scored three touchdowns. He also had two games with at least 100 receiving yards but averaged a career-low 15.3 yards per reception. ESPN.com's Brooke Pryor went on to remind readers that between bursts of productivity and highlight-reel catches, Pickens' third season with the Steelers included a series of on-and-off field incidents, including multiple unsportsmanlike penalties and being late for the Christmas Day game against the Chiefs. Pickens is set to enter the final year of his contract in 2025, but Rooney said the organization hasn't started talking about extending the wide receiver yet. The Steelers typically don't negotiate contracts in-season. |
Steelers president Art Rooney II has weighed in on what he'd like to see the team do at the quarterback position. The Steelers had Russell Wilson and Justin Fields on one-year contracts during the 2024 season, and both of them started games during the regular season. "I think they're both capable quarterbacks, and my preference would be to sign one of them, so that'll be the priority, and I think that will give us the best opportunity to move forward," Rooney said via Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com.
Footballguys view: Wilson got the majority of the work, and the Steelers did not make a change even as the offense's performance cratered in the final weeks. Head coach Mike Tomlin was noncommittal about any plans that the team has at the position, but Rooney's comments are worth noting. The Steelers can start talks on a contract with both quarterbacks at any point, but there was no word on Monday about how quickly Rooney would like to see things move on that front. |

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent QB Russell Wilson said that contract extension discussions with the team have already gotten underway, during an appearance on ESPN's 'Pat McAfee Show' Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Footballguys view: The Steelers don't have a starting quarterback on the roster for next year with both Wilson and Justin Fields set to hit free agency. Wilson may or may not have interest from the Las Vegas Raiders with Pete Carroll hired as their new head coach. Reports indicate the two have patched up their problems with their relationship with the Seahawks years ago. |

Free-agent QB Skylar Thompson (Dolphins) signed a Reserve/Futures contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
Footballguys view: As Profootballtalk.com pointed out, this move makes Thompson part of the 90-man offseason roster, which is more than what the current quarterbacks on the rosters will be unless they re-sign. Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and Kyle Allen will become free agents in March. Last year, the Steelers moved on from Kenny Pickett, Mitchell Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph, hitting the full reset button at the most critical position on the team. Time will tell whether the Steelers clean house again or whether one or more will stick around after his first season in Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, Thompson, 27, was a seventh-round pick of the Dolphins in 2022. He has 10 regular-season appearances, three regular-season starts, and one playoff start from 2022 at Buffalo. |

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson (rest) was limited in practice on Tuesday, Dec. 31.
Footballguys view: The Steelers (10-6) clinched a spot in the AFC playoffs three weeks ago, but their position in the postseason and where that first game will be played remains a question. Winning is important to them, so expect a fully-rested Wilson to start and play as usual. |

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jaylen Warren (ribs) was limited in practice on Tuesday, Dec. 31.
Footballguys view: Warren turned in his best performance of the year against Kansas City, rushing for 71 yards on 11 carries while adding five receptions for 41 yards. The 26-year-old, who will become a restricted free agent in the offseason, has seen a significant uptick in his touches over the past several weeks after taking a back seat to Najee Harris at the beginning of the month. The early expectation is this injury won't keep Warren from playing against the Bengals on Saturday, but we'll watch for more. |
