Panthers | Rookie WR Xavier Legette Set To Be Immediate Starter    Mon Jun 17, 04:59 PM

Despite being slowed by a hamstring injury, Xavier Legette will be a starter right away. "That combination of size, speed, how explosive he is, the way he comes out of routes, it's definitely something that I gotta get used to,'' quarterback Bryce Young said. "We're working on getting that timing down, but I'm super excited."

Footballguys view: As ESPN.com's David Newton reminded readers, Carolina traded into the first round to get the 6-foot-3 Xavier Legette because he reminded the team of the big receivers (Mike Evans, DK Metcalf) that played significant roles in head coach Dave Canales' offenses in the past. They also wanted a receiver who could create separation and get open deep. While fantasy managers are unlikely to invest in the Panthers beyond the front-line pieces, Young making good on optimistic reports about his progress could lead to interest in ancillary pieces with upside like Legette. We'll watch for more.

Panthers | Bryce Young poised for success?    Sun Jun 16, 09:16 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young is positioned to 'take a big jump' in his second season, according to QB Andy Dalton. 'We're going to see Bryce do things he didn't do last year just because of the experience,' Dalton said. 'We're already seeing it right now.''

Footballguys view: Given the considerable investment to land Young, getting the QB on track has been a primary objective. Incoming coach Dave Canales is coming off a 2023 season in which he helped turn Baker Mayfield's career around in Tampa Bay. The offensive line, a problem last year, was upgraded via free agency. They also traded for Steelers wideout Diontae Johnson to bolster a receiving corps led by Adam Thielen. Still, improvement is likely to be incremental. So it's worth remembering he completed 59.8 percent of his passes for 2,877 yards with 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while leading the team to a 2-14 record (in his 16 starts). Keep your expectations in check.

Panthers | Diontae Johnson open to extension    Fri Jun 14, 12:11 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Diontae Johnson is entering the final year of his contract but said he is open to signing an extension with the team.

Footballguys view: Johnson might leave some money on the table if he doesn't let the free agency market set his price in an ever-rising wide receiver salary explosion, but the small trade compensation the Steelers got for him could indicate a lack of interest in him around the league. He has a chance to change that with a good season. The Panthers will tell us what they think of how things are going with Johnson by their action or lack thereof to explore an extension before or during the season.

Panthers | Team playing it safe with Miles Sanders    Tue Jun 11, 02:00 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Miles Sanders (heel) has been working on the side during offseason workouts and not practice with the team due to a heel injury, according to head coach Dave Canales. Per Canales, the team is being cautious with the running back.

Footballguys view: With incoming rookie Jonathon Brooks and Chuba Hubbard ahead of him, Cody Benjamin of CBSSports recently listed Sanders among his top post-June 1 cut and trade candidates. Even with new coach Dave Canales angling for a stronger run game, releasing Sanders would save the Panthers an instant $200,000. Avoiding possible complications in advance of any potential roster move makes sense.

Panthers | Daewood Davis likely on his way to Carolina    Thu Jun 6, 04:02 PM

Free-agent WR Daewood Davis (UFL) is expected to sign an undisclosed contract with the Carolina Panthers in the near future, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins signed Davis as a UDFA out of Western Kentucky last year. He didn't make the final roster, but he did make it to the UFLâ??s Memphis Showboats. Davis was named to the All-UFL team, and he had 41 receptions for 446 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Now, Davis gets a chance on a team with a lot less talent at the wide receiver position than the Dolphins had.

Panthers | Xavier Legette still dealing with ailment    Tue Jun 4, 12:16 PM

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers WR Xavier Legette (hamstring) is still dealing with a hamstring issue Tuesday, June 4.

Footballguys view: In need of an outside threat for Bryce Young, Legette is an explosive, yards-after-catch threat that can turn shorter routes into more significant gains. As ESPN's Jordan Reid suggests, Legette could assume the Chris Godwin role in Dave Canales' offense. With a front-line job in the works, a cautious approach now makes sense.

Panthers | Xavier Legette tweaks hammy    Wed May 29, 01:48 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Xavier Legette (hamstring) tweaked his hamstring at practice on Tuesday, May 28, and is not practicing on Wednesday, May 29, as a precaution.

Footballguys view: Legette has a size/speed combination that we love. The Panthers moved into the end of the first round to secure his services, and now he's going to take some time to recover. We're not concerned about this hamstring injury unless it lingers into training camp. Stay tuned.

Panthers | Terrace Marshall on roster bubble    Sun May 19, 11:48 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Terrace Marshall Jr. appears to be in jeopardy of not making the team's roster after struggling to adjust to the pro level, according to Joseph Person of The Athletic. He had requested a trade last year due to limited playing time but there appeared to be little interest in his services from other teams.

Footballguys view: There is no doubt about this. Marshall has always had physical talent, but the former second-round pick (2021) has never played up to his potential. When the Panthers selected Xavier Legette in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft, guys like Marshall got pushed down the depth chart. A fresh start for Marshall might be best.

Panthers | Ja'Tavion Sanders has big goals    Sun May 12, 09:34 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Ja'Tavion Sanders said he wants to be 'the new face of the offense,' and head coach Dave Canales believes Sanders brings versatility to the offense. 'He's a guy, you can move around a little bit more, maybe play him in the slot a little bit,' Canales said.

Footballguys view: Sanders' 99 career catches in three seasons at Texas ranks first all-time among Longhorn tight ends. Carolina's tight end room now has Tommy Tremble, Ian Thomas, Stephen Sullivan, Jordan Matthews, and Sanders. Sanders will have ample opportunity to impress Canales and the rest of the team during organized team activities later this month and mandatory minicamp in June. None of this makes him draft-worthy for our purposes, but fantasy managers looking for potential streaming options should keep an eye out.

Panthers | Rashaad Penny heading to Carolina    Mon May 6, 12:05 PM

Free-agent RB Rashaad Penny (Eagles) plans to sign with the Carolina Panthers following rookie minicamp, according to sources Monday, May 6. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick of the Seahawks in 2018, Penny has flashed his big-play ability but has never produced consistently over time. His best season as a pro came in 2021 when he had 119 carries for 749 yards and six touchdowns. Penny signed with the Eagles last offseason. He finished 2023 with 11 carries for 33 yards. In Carolina, Penny will reunite with Panthers head coach Dave Canales, who was on the Seahawks' offensive staff for all five of Penny's seasons in Seattle. The team selected Jonathan Brooks, widely viewed as the top back in this year's draft, in the second round. Brooks is coming off a torn ACL suffered last November. The newcomers will join a group of holdovers led by Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders.

Panthers | Trio of UDFAs joining Carolina    Sun Apr 28, 02:52 PM

Undrafted free-agent RB Jaden Shirden (Monmouth), WR Devin Carter (West Virginia) and TE Kevin Foelsch (New Haven) agreed to undisclosed contracts with the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, April 28.

Footballguys view: Shirden is an interesting player to monitor in crazy deep dynasty formats. He was impressive to our very own Cecil Lammey during the week of practice for the East-West Shrine Bowl earlier this year. Shirden has the quickness and speed to be effective in space.

Panthers | Carolina adds Ja'Tavion Sanders    Sat Apr 27, 12:10 PM

Texas TE Ja'Tavion Sanders was selected by the Carolina Panthers with the 101st overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Sanders has the size and speed to be a playmaker in the NFL. The Panthers are looking to add more targets for QB Bryce Young. With only Tommy Tremble on the depth chart in front of him, Sanders could be starting sooner rather than later. All fantasy GMs should take note.

Carolina Panthers WR Diontae Johnson informed reporters on Tuesday, April 23, that head coach Dave Canales told him shortly after his trade from the Pittsburgh Steelers that he would play 'X' (split end) and be the first read on the majority of passing plays in 2024.

Footballguys view: Yahoo's Matt Harmon, also the creator of the Reception Perception method for assessing the receiver position, reminds us that Carolina's wideouts could not get open last season. Harmon also notes that is Johnson's specialty. Johnson, who finished last year as WR45, currently resides at WR41 on the Footballguys 2024 Draft Rankings. He is going in that same spot in best-ball drafts at Underdog and BestBall 10s.
