New England Patriots OT Chukwuma Okorafor was released Monday, Feb. 10.
Link to storyGreg Bedard, from Boston Sports Journal, writes the New England Patriots could be contemplating trading second-year QB Joe Milton III.
Footballguys view: Milton was a sixth-round pick out of Tennessee in the 2024 NFL Draft, and he played well in relief of a banged up Drake Maye as a rookie. He's got a huge arm and the mobility to keep plays alive. This is not a great quarterback class, so perhaps the Patriots would be tempted to move on from Milton after just one year. |
Free-agent TE Giovanni Ricci signed a Reserve/Future contract with the New England Patriots Monday, Feb. 3. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

New England Patriots WR Brenden Schooler (hernia) is not participating on the Pro Bowl Games because he underwent hernia surgery after the season, according to a source.
Link to storyThe New England Patriots recently hired John Streicher to serve as the team's vice president of football operations and strategy, according to multiple sources. He had previously served as the Los Angeles Rams' game management coordinator.
Link to storyThe New England Patriots recently hired Riley Larkin as an offensive assistant, according to multiple sources. He had most recently served as an offensive assistant in the quarterbacks room at Ohio State.
Link to storyNew England Patriots cornerbacks coach Mike Pellegrino will not return to the team, according to sources Tuesday, Jan. 28.
Link to storyFormer Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown has found a landing spot. According to multiple reports, Brown is headed to the Patriots to be their offensive passing game coordinator/tight ends coach.
Footballguys view: Brown, 38, held three different positions with the Bears last year -- passing game coordinator, offensive coordinator, and interim head coach. He was elevated to the latter position after Matt Eberflus was fired in late November. Chicago went 1-4 with Brown as the interim coach before hiring Ben Johnson to take over the full-time role last week. Brown will work under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels on new head coach Mike Vrabel's staff. |
Boston College senior analyst for football strategy/research Doug Marrone was hired by the New England Patriots as an offensive line coach Monday, Jan. 27.
Link to storyTennessee Titans defensive line coach/pass rush specialist Clinton McMillan was hired to an unspecified assistant coaching job with the New England Patriots on Friday, Jan. 24.
Link to storyCleveland Browns offensive quality control coach Ashton Grant was named as the new quarterbacks coach for the New England Patriots on Thursday, Jan. 23.
Footballguys view: The 28-year-old was also up for the Packers quarterbacks coach job. This means that Josh McDaniels will not have two hats as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, as he has in the past for the Patriots. The support staff for Drake Maye from 2024 is probably going to completely change, with Grant playing a key role. Head coach Mike Vrabel worked with Grant when they were both with the Browns last season. |
New York Giants defensive assistant Zak Kuhr has agreed to join the New England Patriots coaching staff in an undisclosed role, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Kuhr was on Mike Vrabel's staff in Tennessee as an assistant linebackers coach and the two were on the Ohio State staff together in 2011 and 2012. It's not clear yet what his job will be for the Patriots. |
Detroit Lions defensive line coach Terrell Williams was hired by the New England Patriots Wednesday, Jan. 22, to be their new defensive coordinator.
Link to storyUpdating previous reports, former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels officially was named New England Patriots offensive coordinator for the third time, the team announced Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Footballguys view: McDaniels was the OC in New England for two stints (2006-08, 2012-2021) with great success. With Mike Vrabel as head coach, McDaniels could do what he does best - just focus on the offense. It's all about 'fit' in the NFL, and McDaniels would make a nice fit for QB Drake Maye. |
Updating previous reports, former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels is expected to be named New England Patriots offensive coordinator for the third time, according to sources, after completing an interview Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Los Angeles Chargers passing game coordinator Marcus Brady recently interviewed with the New England Patriots regarding their offensive coordinator vacancy, according to a source.
Footballguys view: As SI.com noted, Brady has been in the NFL landscape since 2018. He started his coaching career with the Indianapolis Colts as a quarterbacks coach, then became offensive coordinator for two seasons from 2021-22. Then-head coach Frank Reich was the play-caller for Indianapolis during Brady's tenure. Following his short stint in Indianapolis, Brady arrived with the Philadelphia Eagles for a season as a senior offensive assistant in 2023, then made his way to Los Angeles. Last week, head coach Mike Vrabel's Patriots interviewed Thomas Brown for the position held by Alex Van Pelt during No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye's rookie campaign. |
Detroit Lions defensive line coach Terrell Williams is of interest to the New England Patriots, who are reportedly targeting him to be the new defensive coordinator, according to a source. Williams served under new Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel when both of them were with the Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2023.
Footballguys view: Detroit will need a new defensive coordinator if Aaron Glenn leaves to become a head coach, and Williams has a history with both Vrabel and Lions coach Dan Campbell. Williams began his NFL coaching career in 2012 with the Raiders. He went to the Dolphins in 2015 as the defensive line coach and landed with the Titans in 2018. Vrabel promoted Williams to assistant head coach in 2023. Another Vrabel assistant in Tennessee, current Miami Dolphins outside linebackers coach Ryan Crow, is also in the mix here. |
Miami Dolphins outside linebackers coach Ryan Crow is of interest to the New England Patriots, who requested permission to interview him for their defensive coordinator vacancy on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Footballguys view: Crow, who joined the Dolphins for the 2024 season, spent the previous six seasons working under new Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel with the Titans. He was a defensive assistant and an assistant special teams coach before moving on to the outside linebackers role for his final three seasons in Nashville. |
New England Patriots impending free-agent CB Jonathan Jones likely will be one of the players the Patriots will look to re-sign this offseason, in the opinion of Patriots.com's Jordy McElroy.

Confirming a previous report, the New England Patriots agreed to terms with former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel on a multi-year deal Sunday, Jan. 12, to make him the team's next head coach, according to multiple sources.
Footballguys view: This one wasn't hard to see coming after Jared Mayo was fired. Vrabel had a great career with the Patriots and his teams mostly overachieved in Tennessee. For fantasy, we'll be very interested to see who Vrabel brings in as his offensive coordinator. Josh McDaniels' name has already come up, which would probably not a bad thing for Drake Maye. |
Mike Vrabel player page
New England Patriots QB Drake Maye's 408 rushing yards from Week 6 to Week 18 ranked fourth among quarterbacks.
Footballguys view: Maye is a dual-threat quarterback. He's got a big arm and plays "YOLO" ball as a passer, but he can tuck it and run if need be. The future looks bright for the Patriots with Maye as their franchise quarterback. |
Former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel will interview with the New England Patriots for their head coach vacancy Thursday, Jan. 9.
Footballguys view: The Patriots fired Jerod Mayo after one year, and most think it's because they are going to get Vrabel. He's got a ton of interest from teams, so expect a bidding war for Vrabel's services. The former Titans head coach can rebuild a culture and win games regularly. The Patriots are an attractive landing spot for any head coaching candidate because of QB Drake Maye. |

Longtime NFL assistant Pep Hamilton (Texans) interviewed with the New England Patriots for their head coaching vacancy on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Footballguys view: Hamilton, 50, has not been with an NFL team since 2022, when he served as Houston's OC. He was the Texans' passing game coordinator and QBs coach in 2021 and the Chargers' QBs coach in 2020. He was also the XFL's DC Defenders head coach in 2020. Noted for his work with young quarterbacks, Hamilton could potentially help develop Drake Maye and Joe Milton. The Patriots will also meet with former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich on Tuesday. Former Titans head coach Mike Vrabel and current Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson are expected to be strong candidates for the New England job. |
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich is interviewing for the New England Patriots head coaching vacancy Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Footballguys view: As Profootballtalk.com reminded readers, Leftwich, 44, was the Bucs offensive coordinator under head coaches Bruce Arians and Todd Bowles from 2019-2022 -- helping the club win Super Bowl LV to cap the 2020 season. While the team ranked No. 3, No. 3, and No. 2 in scoring from 2019-2021 -- with Jameis Winston as quarterback in 2019 before Tom Brady arrived in 2020 -- the team slipped to No. 15 in yards and No. 25 in points in 2022. Bowles elected to fire Leftwich after that season. Leftwich was reportedly close to earning the Jaguars job in early 2022, but the club hired Doug Pederson instead. While Leftwich has not been coaching for the last two seasons, he recently told The Athletic's Mike Jones that he has hired new representation and noted he would aggressively pursue NFL jobs. The No. 7 overall pick of the 2003 draft, Leftwich appeared in 60 games with 50 starts through the 2012 season, playing for Jacksonville, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, and Tampa Bay. |

Free-agent DT Marcus Harris, CB D.J. James, WR John Jiles, OT Caleb Jones, LB Andrew Parker Jr., S Mark Perry and PK John Parker Romo signed Reserve/Future contracts with the New England Patriots Monday, Jan. 6. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Link to storyDetroit Lions offensive coordinator Benjamin Johnson has been requested for an interview for the New England Patriots' head coaching position.
Footballguys view: As Profootballtalk.com notes, the Patriots were linked with Mike Vrabel shortly after firing head coach Jerod Mayo on Sunday, but he's not the only name in the mix. Johnson's success with Detroit's offense has made him a hot commodity. The Bears have also requested an interview with Johnson. Either of the teams would offer Johnson a chance to work with a quarterback drafted at the top of the first round last year. Drake Maye didn't lead the Patriots to much success on the scoreboard after replacing Jacoby Brissett as the starter, but he showed great promise with both his arm and his legs over the course of the year. PFT's Josh Alper suggests the presence of such a quarterback will likely be of interest to Johnson as he has declined other head coaching overtures in the past, but it remains to be seen if there will wind up being a fit with either team at this point. |
Drake Maye started Sunday's win over the Bills but went to the bench after a three-snap outing, giving way to fellow rookie Joe Milton III -- and what an NFL debut it was for him. He completed 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and made plays all game with his legs.
Footballguys view: The Patriots' 2024 draft class certainly has its warts right now, but Maye was a hit, and Milton's one outing -- even against Bills backups -- offers some fascinating future potential. With Jared Mayo getting fired after Sunday's game, the opening will be more appealing due to the long-term outlook at QB. |

New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo was fired following the Week 18 victory against the Buffalo Bills. Mayo ended up coaching the team to a 4-13 record in his first and only season at the helm.
Footballguys view: Mayo never seemed to be completely in control of big decisions, or at least he was too reactive and not consistent with his approach to big decisions week-to-week. This is probably the right move even with owners becoming more aware of the value of continuity and damage done when teams are making changes before a program can fully be implemented. Mike Vrabel should be a strong candidate for this job. |

New England Patriots LB Christian Elliss finished with a game-high 13 total tackles with five solo stops and a pass defensed in Week 18 against the Buffalo Bills.
Link to storyNew England Patriots WR Kayshon Boutte (head) left the Week 18 game because of a head injury and is considered questionable to return.
Footballguys view: Boutte had his second big game in the last month. This time as a downfield target for Joe Milton in a game that ultimately cost the Patriots the #1 pick. Boutte is only 22 and has the highest ceiling of any receiver on the roster with the team likely to make significant additions at the position in the draft and/or free agency. |
