New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr has $10 million guaranteed for 2025 with another $30 million scheduled to kick in March 15. His release would only save his cap-strapped team a couple of million dollars and the team is unlikely to be in a position to draft a blue-chip quarterback, which makes it likely that Carr will remain the starting quarterback for at least one more season.

San Francisco 49ers assistant Brandon Staley is the leading candidate to become defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints.

San Francisco 49ers assistant head coach Brandon Staley is expected to become the defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints after Kellen Moore signs his deal as the new head coach, according to sources Monday, Feb. 10.
Footballguys view: The Saints haven't officially hired Kellen Moore as their new head coach, but once that happens, Staley will be a top candidate to run the defense. Moore was Staley's offensive coordinator in Los Angeles in 2023. Staley had the No. 1 defense with the Rams in 2020, which he parlayed into the Chargers' head coaching job in 2021. He spent last season as assistant head coach of the 49ers. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that the Saints also have interest in Bucs outside linebackers coach George Edwards for the position. We'll watch for more. |

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr likely will receive interest from a few teams this offseason if the Saints decide to release him, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
Footballguys view: Money will be an issue here. Carr has a $10 million roster bonus and another $30 million in base salary that becomes guaranteed three days into the league year in March. That will be the deadline for New Orleans to make a decision. USA Today noted that Carr has made it known that he would refuse to accept a pay cut. While the quarterback has leverage here, his future will ultimately be in Kellen Moore's hands if the Saints officially hire him as their head coach, as expected. Carr will be back if Moore can see a path forward with him at quarterback. If the new coach wants a new QB, the Saints could make it happen. |

New Orleans Saints WR Bub Means (ankle) told WWL Radio's Jeff Nowak on Thursday, Feb. 6, that he was cleared in late January from the high-ankle injury he suffered in Week 8 and is now at 'full speed.'
Footballguys view: Means is a special talent who can work as a deep threat. He needs to stay healthy, something that was a problem for him in 2024. Means is competing to be the Saints no.3 receiver |
New Orleans Saints DE Chase Young's 73 quarterback pressures in 2024 were the sixth-highest total in the NFL.

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is expected to meet again with the New Orleans Saints after the Super Bowl, according to sources. Additionally, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis reportedly informed other head-coaching candidates that he intends to continue discussions with Moore.
Footballguys view: Moore would be by far the best possibility for the Saints to fill what is considered a very unattractive job. If Moore decides to turn them down, the Saints will have to get creative because their other top choice, Mike McCarthy, decided he doesn't want to coach next season. |

Word on Sunday was that the Saints would be in Philadelphia as soon as Monday to conduct an in-person head coaching interview with Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, and that's exactly what happened. The Saints announced on Tuesday morning that they completed an interview with Moore on Monday night. It is the second time that Moore has met with the team, but the first time they have spoken in person.
Footballguys view: Moore's interview came after the Saints had second interviews with Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. Former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is also expected to interview with the team. Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady pulled his name from consideration, and it's unclear if Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury will opt to meet with them. As PFT notes, if the Saints decide that Moore is their choice, they won't be able to finalize a deal until after the Super Bowl. |
Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is expected to have a second interview with the New Orleans Saints for their vacant head coaching vacancy. It will be the second interview, and members of team management plan to fly to Philadelphia and meet Moore as soon as Monday, Jan. 27.
Footballguys view: The Saints job is seen as undesirable because of their dead end cap situation, but Moore could still decide to take the job after seeing Byron Leftwich, Bobby Slowik others lose their opportunity and offensive coordinator jobs quickly after being seen as hot candidates. Moore's stock is peaking after his team scored 55 points in the NFC Championship game. |

New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is scheduled to interview with the New Orleans Saints regarding their head coaching vacancy on Saturday, Jan. 25. In addition, former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is expected to speak with the Saints at some point in the next week.
Footballguys view: The Saints are still looking for Dennis Allen's replacement. With Ben Johnson taking the Bears job, McCarthy is arguably the top rated candidate out there. The Saints still have salary cap issues and a lack of talent on both sides of the ball, so any rebuild McCarthy (or anyone) could do would take time. |

Updating previous reports, the New Orleans Saints have postponed head-coaching interviews until later in the week, due to inclement weather. New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was scheduled to interview on Tuesday, Jan. 21, while Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver were set to interview on Wednesday, Jan. 22.

The Saints are setting up an in-person interview with Mike McCarthy, per source. Logistics are still being set. Weather and all that has to be worked around, but the goal is this week.
Footballguys view: McCarthy was the Saints' offensive coordinator under head coach Jim Haslett from 2000 to 2004. He spent one year in the same job with the 49ers before becoming the Packers head coach. He was 125-77-2 in Green Bay and won a Super Bowl before being fired during the 2018 season. McCarthy was 49-35 with the Cowboys. As Profootballtalk.com notes, the Saints have started setting up second, in-person interviews with candidates that they have already interviewed remotely. However, McCarthy might not need a second round if the team likes what it hears whenever the two sides can get together. |
New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will have a second interview with the New Orleans Saints Tuesday, Jan. 21, for their head coaching vacancy.
Footballguys view: The Saints have completed initial interviews with Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, and Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, among others. Mike McCarthy also emerged as a candidate after his departure from the Dallas Cowboys. In addition to Kafka,l Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver is also getting a second interview. We'll continue to watch for more. |

Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver will have a second interview for the New Orleans Saints head coaching vacancy Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Footballguys view: Another candidate getting a second interview for the Saints job this week, according to Pelissero, is New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. As SI.com's Alain Poupart notes, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has been considered one of the front-runners for the opening, and that still should apply even after his defense fell short in a loss to Commanders rookie Jayden Daniels in the NFC divisional round upset loss at Ford Field on Saturday night. Among others who have interviewed for the position is Darren Rizzi, who finished 2024 as New Orleans' interim head coach after Dennis Allen was fired. Weaver is also among the more than a dozen candidates to interview to become head coach of the Chicago Bears, the latest candidate being former Tennessee Titans running back Eddie George. |

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi is interviewing with the Saints in hopes he will take over as the full-time head coach on Friday, Jan. 17.
Footballguys view: Rizzi could also be in consideration for the newly open special teams coordinator job in Denver under his old boss Sean Payton. The Saints have interest in Mike McCarthy, but Chicago is probably the more likely landing spot for him. The Saints will also make a strong play for Aaron Glenn to come back to their staff as head coach after being part of the success story in Detroit. |
Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has interest from the New Orleans Saints for their head coach vacancy, according to sources Monday, Jan. 13.
Link to storyWashington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury has been requested for an interview for the New Orleans Saints head coaching vacancy.
Footballguys view: The Saints have Derek Carr as their quarterback, so Kingsbury would be tasked with getting the most from him (and the team should be considering a rookie quarterback to develop as well). Kingsbury is doing great things with Commanders QB Jayden Daniels, and that's why he's drawing interest from several teams. |

Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn will have a virtual interview for the New Orleans Saints head coaching vacancy this week.
Footballguys view: According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Glenn will also be interviewed by the New York Jets, Chicago Bears, and Jacksonville Jaguars regarding their respective head coach openings. Glenn served as defensive backs coach in New Orleans from 2016 to 2020 before joining Dan Campbell's staff in Detroit. All of the interviews will be virtual, per NFL rules, and they reportedly will take place from Thursday through Saturday. Teams will have to wait until after the Lions are eliminated from the playoffs to offer Glenn a deal, but it's clear that he will have multiple options as he tries to transition to a head coach this offseason. |

Saints quarterback Derek Carr said he has had "super positive" conversations with team leadership regarding his future after sitting out seven games in 2024. He has two years left on the free-agent deal he signed before the 2023 season. Carr, whose contract average of $37.5 million ranks in a tie for 15th at his position, according to Over The Cap, said he would not be open to a pay cut. "I wouldn't take a pay cut," he told ESPN.
Footballguys view: Carr is due $40 million next year and will count $51.45 million against the salary cap in 2025 if the Saints don't restructure his contract. Carr sat out the final four games of the season because of two fractures in his non-throwing hand and sat out three games earlier in the season because of a strained oblique. Carr said "it sucked" to be on the sideline as the Saints (5-11) lost the final four games of the season. He said his focus now is getting back to full health while the Saints hold a search for a head coach. Carr was 5-5 as a starter in 2024, and the Saints did not win a game with backup quarterbacks Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener. |

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore was requested to interview with the New Orleans Saints for their head coach vacancy, according to sources Monday, Jan. 6.
Footballguys view: The list of candidates for the Saints HC opening is growing, with Moore joining Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady and Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn as potential candidates. A former quarterback for the Lions and Dallas, Moore decided to remain with the Cowboys as their QBs coach and end his playing career in 2018. Dallas later promoted him to offensive coordinator for the 2019 season and he retained the position through a coaching change. However, he and head coach Mike McCarthy later elected to mutually part ways, and the Chargers hired Moore as offensive coordinator in 2023. Moore joined the Eagles as an offensive coordinator when the Chargers hired Jim Harbaugh before the 2024 season. In 2024, the Eagles ranked No. 7 in points per game, No. 8 in yards per game, No. 29 in passing yards and No. 2 in rushing yards. |

Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady was requested to interview with the New Orleans Saints for their head coach vacancy, according to sources Monday, Jan. 6.
Footballguys view: Brady is also set to interview with the New York Jets. Brady, who spent two years with the Saints as an offensive assistant, spent a season as the Panthers offensive coordinator but was fired before the end of his second season. The Bills hired him as a QB coach in 2022 and was promoted to offensive coordinator when Ken Dorsey was shown the door last November. In 2024, the Bills' offense ranked No. 10 in total yards, No. 2 in points scored, No. 9 in rushing yards and No. 9 in passing yards. We'll watch for more on this in coming days. |
After an exceptional performance by the New Orleans Saints tight ends room against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, one of their main targets suffered what looked to be a severe knee injury late in the game. Foster Moreau was taken out of the game in the final two minutes after taking a blow to his leg.
Footballguys view: It seemed Moreau could not walk under his own power after the play and had to be dragged out of bounds for assistance. It was announced later that Moreau was carted into the locker room in an air cast, typically a sign of severe injury. Moreau had come on strong over the last five games, averaging over 35 yards a catch and hauling in 15 of his 18 targets during that span. He ended the year with 32 catches for 413 yards, one reception, and 7 yards shy of his career highs. Moreau also caught five touchdown passes, which tied his personal best. Hopefully, he will rebound from this at some point next season. |

New Orleans Saints TE Juwan Johnson caught six passes for 80 yards against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 18. He was targeted seven times during the game.
Footballguys view: Johnson operated as the de facto #1 target in the Saints pass offense late this season and was leaned on even more after Foster Moreau went down with a leg injury that required an air cast. Johnson will be a free agent next year, but the Saints could seek to bring him back, especially if Moreau's injury is serious. |
