Vikings | J.J. McCarthy could be ready for start of offseason program Wed Feb 26, 09:29 AM
Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (knee) 'has a chance' to be ready for the start of the team's offseason program in April, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
Footballguys view: McCarthy is set to take over the Vikings this year as their starting quarterback. Sam Darnold did an admirable job for the team in 2024, but they fell short of expectations in the playoffs and he may leave in free agency. McCarthy, their 2024 first-round pick, has been recovering from this knee injury since suffering it during his rookie preseason debut. |
Former New York Jets offensive line coach/run-game coordinator Keith Carter by the Minnesota Vikings as their new assistant offensive line coach on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
Link to storyUpdating previous reports, Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold is unlikely to receive the franchise tag, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on SportsCenter. 'I'm told that the Minnesota Vikings are open to doing a deal with Sam Darnold,' Fowler said. 'People I've talked to around the league believe that the franchise tag is not the likeliest path that Minnesota would take. That's a high number of around $40 million. So, Minnesota's stance seems to be that they're not going to mortgage the future for Sam Darnold,'

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold could be a candidate for the franchise tag if the two sides are not able to work out an agreement before the tag deadline, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Footballguys view: As Profootballtalk.com notes, with two bad games to wrap the season â€" one with the No. 1 seed on the line and one in the Wild Card round â€" the Vikings seem to be more content to move forward with 2024 first-rounder J.J. McCarthy, who missed all of his rookie season after injuring his knee in the preseason opener against the Raiders. Still, it's not outside the realm of possibility the team could keep both. If they do, it would require franchising Darnold. If that's not how it plays out, the veteran will have plenty of suitors, with the Raiders possibly among the most interested. |

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent OG Dalton Risner probably will not re-sign with the Vikings this offseason, in the opinion of WCCO News' Johnny Kahner.
Link to storyMinnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (knee) is slated to begin football drills in the next few weeks and is likely to be ready when organized team activities get underway in May.
Footballguys view: We are likely to see McCarthy as the starting quarterback for the Vikings as long as he is medically able to be out there. His dynasty value should start to rise this offseason, with a likely spike coming on March 5 when the Vikings are almost certain to choose to not tag Sam Darnold in an attempt to trade him before he hits free agency. |
Minnesota Viking impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold has 'earned the right to be a free agent,' although head coach Kevin O'Connell told reporters recently that the team will 'continue to have ongoing dialogue and discussions' with him.
Footballguys view: It sounds like O'Connell is preparing the Vikings fanbase for Darnold's departure in free agency. There was a report that O'Connell said "Our goal is to win a championship and Sam Darnold is going to be a huge part of it when we do it", but O'Connell said that report was not "100% accurate". It's not clear if the team would get much in a tag and trade deal with teams knowing that they are very high on 2024 first round pick JJ McCarthy and comfortable turning the offense over to him in his second year despite his going down for the season with a knee injury in August last year. |

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (knee) said he is ahead of schedule in his recovery and is looking forward to participating in offseason workouts.
Footballguys view: Great news for the Vikings here. McCarthy was their first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but he missed his entire rookie season due to this knee injury. His fit with Kevin O'Connell will be fun to see develop over the next few years. McCarthy is calm in the pocket, can keep plays alive with his feet, and he's an accurate passer although his arm strength will be something to monitor. |
Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy said he hopes to receive the chance to compete for the starting quarterback next season.
Footballguys view: McCarthy is ahead of schedule in his recovery from the knee injury that cut his rookie season short before it started. With Sam Darnold falling apart down the stretch and set to hit free agency, the Vikings should be comfortable turning things over to the 2024 first-round pick. |
Minnesota Vikings QB Sam Darnold averaged 2.6 seconds in pocket time during the 2024 season, according to Pro Football Reference.
Footballguys view: If the Vikings don't tag or re-sign Darnold, pay close attention to quality of his offensive line. He has a tendency to "see ghosts" and was exposed by the Lions and Rams pressure-heavy defensive game plans to end the season. |

The Vikings and Head Coach Kevin O'Connell have agreed to a multiyear contract extension, the team announced Tuesday.
Footballguys view: O'Connell was set to enter the final season of his original contract with the club. "Kevin is exactly who we believed him to be when we named him as our head coach -- an innovative play-caller, an excellent communicator, and a strong leader who motivates and connects with his players," Vikings owner/president Mark Wilf said in a team statement. "He has helped establish a culture that positions us for sustained success, and he will continue to set the standard we need as we pursue a championship for Vikings fans." O'Connell said, "It is an absolute honor to continue leading the Minnesota Vikings." Talks are also ongoing with the Vikings and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah on an extension as the club looks to keep the O'Connell-Adofo-Mensah combo together, Rapoport and Pelissero reported. |

Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson led the NFL with 47 receptions and 1,106 receiving yards on passes that traveled 10 or more yards in the air.
Footballguys view: Jefferson is beating teams no matter where it is on the field. The start to his pro career is one of the best (if not THE best) in NFL history. Jefferson has a great connection with QB Sam Darnold, but we have to see what this duo can do in the postseason - and then what happens with Darnold and 2024 first-round QB JJ McCarthy. |
