Cowboys | Rico Dowdle could return to DAL Tue Feb 25, 08:24 AM
Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent RB Rico Dowdle is a player the Cowboys are interested in re-signing this offseason, according to chief operating officer Stephen Jones.
Footballguys view: Undrafted out of South Carolina in 2020, Dowdle patiently waited for his opportunity with the Cowboys. He made the most of that in a contract year, and Dowdle rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2024. His 39 catches were a career high as well. With a great running back class in the 2025 NFL Draft, free agent running backs may not have as much interest as they want. Perhaps staying with the Cowboys on a team-friendly deal could be in Dowdle's future. Stay tuned. |

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent QB Trey Lance probably will not return to the Cowboys next season, according to Cowboys chief operating officer Stephen Jones.
Footballguys view: When Dak Prescott was banged up, the Cowboys turned to Cooper Rush instead of Lance. That's pretty much all you have to say about the former no.3 overall pick. He's busted with the 49ers, and Lance could barely see the field with the Cowboys. His physical tools will have some team interested, but the days of looking at him as a potential starter are over. |

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott said he expects to use play-action more often under head coach Brian Schottenheimer. 'I've always enjoyed play-action pass, so just being able to get back to that,' Prescott said. 'But you've got to start with the run game, and when you have that, the rest of the offense can open up.'

Dallas Cowboys LB Marist Liufau could be in line for a bigger role in the defense next season because of LB DeMarvion Overshown's (knee) uncertain availability for 2025, in the opinion of NFL.com's Gennaro Filice.

Former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey is finalizing a deal to be hired by the Dallas Cowboys for an undisclosed role, according to sources Monday, Feb. 10.
Footballguys view: As Profootballtalk.com pointed out, the Cowboys initially hired current head coach Brian Schottenheimer as a coaching analyst in 2022, so Dorsey may start in a similar role with the Cowboys. Or maybe he's the hire for quarterback coach, an opening that's not yet filled. Dorsey interviewed for the offensive coordinator position that went to Klayton Adams. The Browns fired Dorsey as their offensive coordinator after the season. Cleveland finished the season 28th in yards and 32nd in points. Dorsey was Buffalo's offensive coordinator from 2022 before the Bills fired him midway through the 2023 season. Schottenheimer will call the plays for the Cowboys in 2025. |

Kansas State University offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Conor Riley was named as the new offensive line coach for the Dallas Cowboys on Friday, Feb. 7.
Link to storyKansas State Wildcats offensive coordinator Conor Riley is being targeted by the Dallas Cowboys for their offensive line coach vacancy, according to sources Friday, Feb. 7.
Footballguys view: Riley (no relation to Lincoln Riley) has indeed been hired by the Cowboys in a move that many are applauding. He coached Dallas standout offensive lineman Cooper Beebe, an instant hit at center after the team took him in the third round last year. Riley also replaced new Dallas offensive coordinator Klayton Adams as offensive line coach at Sacramento State back in 2011, which is also where 2025 draft prospect Cam Skattebo started out his college career before the running back powered the Arizona State offense in 2024. We'll see if that connection bears any fruit in the draft, as the Cowboys will surely be in the market to add a player to their backfield. |
Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent OG Zack Martin said he likes the Cowboys new coaching staff but has not decided on if he will play in 2025.

Arizona Cardinals offensive line coach Klayton Adams is interviewing with the Dallas Cowboys regarding their offensive coordinator vacancy on Friday, Jan. 31.
Footballguys view: If Adams gets the job, look for his first assignment to be improving the running game. Adams was the tight end coach for the Colts before joining the Cardinals staff. Former Browns offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey and Atlanta tight end coach Kevin Koger are also being mentioned as possibilities, but Adams should be considered the favorite. |
Dallas Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells reportedly agreed to terms on a contract extension to remain in his current post on Thursday, Jan. 30. Terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.
Link to storyNew Orleans Saints running backs coach Derrick Foster recently interviewed for the same position with the Dallas Cowboys, according to a source.
Link to storyFormer Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey will likely interview for the same position in the near future with the Dallas Cowboys, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Browns got rid of Dorsey after just one year, and he was fired in the 2023 season with the Bills. The Cowboys have a ton more talent than the Browns do, so if hired Dorsey could get a lot from guys like QB Dak Prescott and WR CeeDee Lamb. |

Former Chicago Bears linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi has been hired by the Dallas Cowboys as their new linebackers coach. The Cowboys have also hired former Chicago Bears safeties coach Andre Curtis as their defensive passing game coordinator.

Link to storyArizona Cardinals offensive line coach Klayton Adams interviewed with the Dallas Cowboys for their offensive coordinator vacancy, according to sources Wednesday, Jan. 29.
Footballguys view: New Cowboys HC Brian Schottenheimer is looking for help on offense. Adams has been with a couple of teams in the NFL as an assistant (Cardinals, Colts) and has experience running an offense at the college level (Colorado). Schottenheimer is the likely play-caller no matter who gets hired as offensive coordinator. |
Former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus was hired as the new defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday, Jan. 28.
Footballguys view: Eberflus has spent his entire coaching career on the defensive side of the ball and made his name as a DC in Indianapolis, directing a Colts unit to routine finishes in the upper half of the NFL in total yards allowed per game. They peaked in the 2020 season, finishing eighth in the category before Eberflus left to take over as coach of the Chicago Bears in 2022. Eberflus, who takes over for Mike Zimmer, will run a unit led by All-Pro rusher Micah Parsons, with the likes of Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland, and DeMarvion Overshown also existing as either proven or ascending talents. They finished 28th in total yards allowed and 24th in points allowed per game, but considering the personnel losses they sustained, those numbers can't be viewed in a vacuum. With an offseason to get healthy and for Eberflus to implement his system, the Cowboys are hoping for a bounce-back campaign in 2025. |
Miami Dolphins outside linebackers coach Ryan Crow has been requested for an interview by the Dallas Cowboys for their defensive coordinator vacancy.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys QB Cooper Rush had a league-high 17 passes batted by a defender at or behind the line of scrimmage in 2024, according to Pro Football Reference.

Updating a previous report, former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus reportedly agreed to terms to become the new defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys on Friday, Jan. 24.
Footballguys view: He failed as the head coach of the Bears, but Eberflus is known to put together a quality defense. Eberflus was a Cowboys assistant from 2011-17, and he could help new HC Brian Schottenheimer try to get things on track with the Cowboys. |
Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was named as the team's new head coach on Friday, Jan. 24.
Footballguys view: It's an uninspiring hire for Jerry Jones (just the way he likes it?). Jones loves to have coaches he can control, and Schottenheimer didn't really blow anyone away running the Cowboys offense under former HC Mike McCarthy. Schottenheimer has been a long-time assistant coach, but he didn't call plays for the Cowboys over the last two seasons as their OC. We'll see if Jones' trust in Schottenheimer is rewarded with a team that plays up to expectations. |
Former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus is considered 'a prime candidate' to become the new defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, according to multiple sources. Eberflus served as an assistant for the Cowboys from 2011 to 2017.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs (knee) underwent knee surgery Thursday, Jan. 23, and may not be ready for the start of training camp, according to sources.
Footballguys view: The Cowboys defense rallied to have a strong finish once Micah Parsons returned from injury, but they missed their #1 corner. It's not clear who will coach the defense and how Diggs will fit in the new scheme, and he will have to learn on the fly without the benefit of a full offseason install and maybe without a full-go designation at the beginning of camp. |

Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer could conceivably 'cross the finish line' and be named as the team's new head coach as early as Thursday, Jan. 23, according to DLLS' Clarence Hill Jr.
Link to storyUpdating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer completed the second day of his two-day second interview for the head-coaching vacancy with the Cowboys on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Footballguys view: Schottenheimer has never been a head coach in the NFL, but it now seems like he's the favorite to land the job. He's been average or below average as an OC during a few stops in the NFL (Rams 2012-2014), (Seahawks 2018-2020), (Jaguars 2021). With the Cowboys under former HC Mike McCarthy, Schottenheimer did not call plays so he'd get to do that if he gets the job. |
Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will interview for the Cowboys head coaching position.
Footballguys view: The 51-year-old Schottenheimer joined Dallas in 2022 as a coaching analyst. He's been the playcaller for the last two seasons. Schottenheimer has extensive assistant coaching experience. His first NFL job came in Washington as QB coach in 2001 under his father, Marty Schottenheimer. Since then, he's worked as a QB coach or OC for seven organizations. Schottenheimer has never been a head coach or interim. If Jerry Jones landed on Schottenheimer, it would provide some continuity for Dak Prescott and the offense after Mike McCarthy's exit -- even if it wouldn't generate much enthusiasm from the fan base. |
Updating a previous report, the Dallas Cowboys and former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh completed an interview Saturday, Jan. 18 for the team's vacant head coaching position.
Footballguys view: Saleh went 20-36 in just under four seasons as the Jets head coach after being fired following Week 5 this season. However, his side of the football (defense) was never really the issue in New York. After having the league's worst defense in 2021, Saleh's squads were top-five total defenses in each of his last three seasons. |
Former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh is scheduled to interview with the Dallas Cowboys for their head coaching vacancy on Saturday, Jan. 18.
Link to storyPhiladelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore was requested for an interview for the Dallas Cowboys head coaching vacancy.
Footballguys view: Many think that Moore, a former Cowboys player and assistant, will be their next head coach. He's got to be done with the postseason before he can officially interview with his old team. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is flirting with Colorado HC Deion Sanders, but that might be a leverage play as Sanders looks for an extended contract with the Buffaloes. |

Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier will interview for the Dallas Cowboys head coaching position Monday, Jan. 20.
Link to storyFormer New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh is expected to interview for the Dallas Cowboys head coaching vacancy.
Footballguys view: The Jets were not better without Saleh. His type of no-nonsense coaching style could be perfect for a Cowboys team that needs to reset after Mike McCarthy moved on. Saleh could be bound for the 49ers where he could return to the defensive coordinator role, and some consider him a sleeper for the Jaguars head coaching job. |
University of North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick might be at the top of the wish list for the Dallas Cowboys, as they look to fill their head coaching position vacancy, according to multiple sources. Belichick and team owner/general manager Jerry Jones reportedly have had a good relationship over the decades, and sources last month indicated Belichick had interest in the Dallas job if it opened up.
Footballguys view: Belichick signed a contract with UNC with a $10 million buyout if he were to leave the Tar Heels before June 1 of this year. On Monday, FOXSports insider Jordan Schultz reported that Belichick would've been interested in the Dallas Cowboys' head-coaching opening before being hired at UNC if the feeling was mutual. This process is ongoing and will include several high-profile names. We'll follow up on all of them as developments warrant. |
The Dallas Cowboys could be interested in former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore for the team's head coaching vacancy, according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport.
Footballguys view: As SBNation.com noted, when the Cowboys decided to walk away from five-year head coach Mike McCarthy, they made one clear: Fixing the offense was this offseason's number one priority. Even before QB Dak Prescott went down with a season-ending injury, the Cowboys' offense was a big disappointment during McCarthy's final season in Dallas. While Moore's time in Dallas did not end on the greatest note, there's no denying he had the offense operating at a high level during his time as the team's offensive coordinator. Prescott had two of the best seasons of his nine-year career with Moore as his offensive coordinator and was one of the NFL's best during the four years Moore was Dallas' OC. Getting the most of the quarterback would be a good first step in getting the Cowboys on track and increasing the value of the team's top fantasy prospects. |

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is expected to be a free agent after two sides failed to agree on the length of a contract, according to sources Monday, Jan. 13.
Footballguys view: The plot thickens. There have been differing reports about the nature of the outcome. One says they couldn't agree on contract length, the other contends that there were never serious talks about a new deal even though the team blocked the Bears from interviewing McCarthy. It has been reported that the Bears and Saints will both be interested in McCarthy, and he should be considered a strong candidate for at least the New Orleans job. A wide range of names have been tossed out as possibilities in Dallas, including all-time Cowboy great Jason Witten, who is expected to be on the new staff in some shape or form. Former Cowboys and current Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore's name has also come up often. |
Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has not had talks with the Cowboys about a new contract. He's eligible to become a coaching free agent Tuesday, Jan. 14.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys LB Micah Parsons finished with 12 sacks this season, joining Reggie White as the only players in NFL history to record 12 or more sacks in each of their first four seasons.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is set to begin contract discussions with the Cowboys Friday, Jan. 10.
Footballguys view: The Cowboys can negotiate with McCarthy until January 14th exclusively as that's when his contract is set to expire. They didn't move on from him at the end of the regular season, and they denied the Bears from interviewing him for their head coach vacancy. That must mean they want McCarthy to continue as their head coach. Now, they just need to find the right price and length of contract. |
Free-agent RB Malik Davis signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Dallas Cowboys Thursday, Jan. 9. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
