Commanders | Jonathan Allen allowed to seek trade    Tue Feb 25, 09:24 AM

Washington Commanders DE Jonathan Allen has been granted permission to seek a trade.

Footballguys view: Allen (pectoral) is coming off an injury-shortened 2024 season, but there could be a market for his services. He turned 30-years old earlier this year, and if healthy Allen could likely still be a dominant force in the middle of the line.

Commanders | Jayden Daniels named top rookie    Fri Feb 7, 02:58 PM

Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels was named the The Associated Press' Offensive Rookie of the Year Thursday, Feb. 6.

Footballguys view: This was a no brainer as Daniels had one of the best all-time rookie quarterback seasons, coming within one game of being the first rookie quarterback to start in a Super Bowl. Expectations will be sky high next season, and Daniels should go off of the board soon after Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen in fantasy drafts.

Washington Commanders assistant quarterbacks coach David Blough has been requested to interview with the New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars for their quarterbacks coach vacancies, according to sources Wednesday, Jan. 29. Blough also has a request to interview with the Chicago Bears for their pass-game coordinator vacancy.

Footballguys view: Blough only stopped playing football a year ago, and now he's a fast riser in the coaching ranks. That's what working with Jayden Daniels will do for you. Blough is just getting his coaching career started, and apparently he's gaining well deserved attention.

Commanders | Washington inks nine to futures deals    Wed Jan 29, 11:21 AM

Free-agent RB Kazmeir Allen, DT Viliami Fehoko Jr., OG Julian Good-Jones, QB Sam Hartman, TE Tyree Jackson, DE Andre Jones Jr., WR Chris Moore, S Ben Nikkel and TE Cole Turner signed Reserve/Futures contracts with the Washington Commanders on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Footballguys view: We'll stubbornly monitor Jackson in crazy deep dynasty formats. The converted quarterback has made the transition to tight end, and that's something that Washington was able to do successfully years ago with Logan Thomas. We doubt Jackson works out like Thomas did (who was great when healthy), but it's worth keeping an eye on.

Commanders | Zach Ertz Won't Retire; Hopes To Return To Washington    Mon Jan 27, 03:53 PM

Veteran tight end Zach Ertz signed a one-year deal to join the Commanders last offseason as a free agent. But playing alongside rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, Ertz illustrated he's still plenty productive. And now, as he heads into free agency, he not only has no plans to retire but also appears to want to be back with Washington in 2025. "It was a one-year [deal] so far," Ertz said, "but I feel like we're just scratching the surface as a quarterback and tight end combination."

Footballguys view: While Ertz acknowledged the uncertainty of the future, he did state plainly, "I still want to play football next year." Ertz caught 66 passes for 654 yards with seven touchdowns during the regular season. He then caught 18 passes for 155 yards with a TD during the playoffs. We'll be watching for more.

Commanders | Washington comes up short in NFC title game    Sun Jan 26, 06:34 PM

The Washington Commanders were eliminated by the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 26. QB Jayden Daniels completed 29-of-48 passes for 255 yards, one touchdown and one interception while rushing six times for a team-high 48 yards with a score. RB Brian Robinson Jr. struggled with 11 runs for just 36 yards, while RB Austin Ekeler was bottled up for just 15 yards on eight carries, while contributing five receptions for 17 yards while losing a fumble. TE Zach Ertz posted game highs with 11 receptions, 104 yards and 16 targets, while WR Terry McLaurin had three grabs for 51 yard and a TD on seven targets. WR Dyami Brown posted three receptions for 42 yards on five targets with a fumble lost. WR Olamide Zaccheaus added four catches for 26 yards on five targets, while TE Ben Sinnott had a 23-yard catch on his only target, with WR Jamison Crowder adding a 4-yard catch on three targets. CB Jeremy Chinn and LB Bobby Wagner each totaled team bests with nine stops.

Footballguys view: The Commanders offense fumbled the ball away or settled for field goals too many times to hang with the Eagles. Brown's fumble slows down the momentum he had built in the playoffs as he heads to free agency, while Ertz had a great game against the team he won a ring with in 2018. Washington exceeded any reasomable expectations this year and they will be the standard for stunning one-year turnarounds for the foreseeable future.

Commanders | Daron Payne ruled out    Sat Jan 25, 03:32 PM

Washington Commanders DT Daron Payne (finger, knee) has been ruled out of the NFC Championship game.

Footballguys view: Payne has started every game since the 2020 season and 88 in a row. According to Profootballtalk.com, Payne's absence opens the door for Sheldon Day and Jer'Zhan Newton, with one getting the start and both getting a heavier workload against one of the best offensive lines the NFL has seen in recent years. Newton, a rookie, started 11 games this year in place of Jonathan Allen, who missed more than two months before returning in late December.

Commanders | Torn ACL for Samuel Cosmi     Sun Jan 19, 03:36 PM

Washington Commanders OG Samuel Cosmi (knee) has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and will miss the rest of the season, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

Commanders | Samuel Cosmi likely to miss rest of postseason    Sun Jan 19, 12:05 PM

Updating a previous report, Washington Commanders OG Samuel Cosmi (knee) is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam Sunday, Jan. 19. According to multiple sources, Cosmi's knee injury appears serious enough that it will cause him to miss the NFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 26, and possibly Super Bowl LIX, if the Commanders advance.

Footballguys view: The Eagles pass rush was a big reason that they were able to advance to host Washington in the NFC Championship, so this could be consequential. Cosmi has been one of the best guards in the league over the last two seasons. The four year, $74 million extension he signed right before the season may end up being a big bargain even with this injury - which has been confirmed to be a torn ACL.

Commanders | Washington torches Detrout to advance    Sun Jan 19, 12:06 AM

Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels completed 22 of his 31 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns, and he ran 16 times for 51 yards in a 45-31 win over the Detroit Lions in the Divisional Round. RB Brian Robinson Jr. had 15 carries for 77 yards and two scores, and RB Austin Ekeler finished with 47 rushing yards on six carries to go with 41 receiving yards. WR Terry McLaurin caught four passes for 87 yards and a touchdown, and WR Dyami Brown had six grabs for a team-high 98 yards. TE Zach Ertz ended with five catches for 28 yards and a score. S Jeremy Chinn led the defense with a team-high 12 tackles, and DE Dorance Armstrong logged a pair of sacks.

Footballguys view: As NFL.com notes, Daniels has impressed all season, but Saturday's win over Detroit. Daniels was excellent in last week's wild-card win over Tampa Bay, but he was sensational in this contest. The rookie signal-caller didn't turn the ball over and never really seemed fazed by the stage he was playing on. Washington head coach Dan Quinn trusted his young quarterback so much that he went for it four times on fourth down. Daniels helped the Commanders convert three of those. They also scored four touchdowns on four trips inside the red zone. Washington seemed like a fun story when the postseason began, as the upstart team shocked everyone with its immediate success. Now, the Commanders are playing in their first NFC Championship Game in 33 years, and they have a realistic shot of winning that game.
