Buccaneers | Tampa Bay trying hard to keep Chris Godwin Wed Feb 26, 09:29 AM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin 'means the world' to the organization, according to general manager Jason Licht, who told reporters on Tuesday, Feb. 25, that the team moved back the voidable year deadline on his contract recently to increase the chances of getting a deal done before the start of free agency.
Footballguys view: Godwin has been incredible productive for the Buccaneers for almost a decade. He was on his way to another 1,000-yard performance (it would have been his fourth in a row and fifth of his career) before suffering a dislocated ankle that kept him out of over half the 2024 season. Now set to be a free agent, Godwin's market may not be as strong due to the injury he's recovering from. Perhaps staying with the team he knows is the best plan for Godwin at this time. |

Link to storyUpdating a previous report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant general manager Mike Greenberg withdrew his name from consideration to interview for the Jacksonville Jaguars' general manager vacancy on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Link to storyThere are no sour grapes from Baker Mayfield regarding Liam Coen's departure. The former Buccaneers offensive coordinator became Jacksonville's head coach on Jan. 24 to end a drama-filled week in which he initially pulled himself out of the running and returned to Tampa Bay on a new contract, only to then accept a second interview with Jacksonville and, subsequently, the job offer. Despite all the back and forth, Mayfield gets it. "I know people are gonna be upset about it, but . . . you can't argue with that decision," Mayfield said. "I can't be mad at that. As much as I would want to have him still here, it is what it is. Life goes on, and I'm happy for him."
Footballguys view: It marks the second straight year Mayfield's OC has left for a head-coaching job since the QB joined the Buccaneers in 2023. Mayfield first revitalized his career under offensive coordinator Dave Canales, posting 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions to reach his first Pro Bowl. Canales left for the Carolina Panthers, in came Coen, and Mayfield flourished all the more. Under Coen, he shattered career highs set just the year prior, completing 71.4 percent of his throws for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns. The Bucs promoted passing game coordinator Josh Grizzard to OC last week, offering at least some continuity. |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers pass-game coordinator Josh Grizzard was interviewed internally for the team's offensive coordinator vacancy Wednesday, Jan. 29.
Footballguys view: The Buccaneers have done their due diligence by requesting several interviews outside the organization for their now-vacant offensive coordinator position. But they're also looking inward. As SI.com notes, the Bucs are reeling after Liam Coen left to become the head coach of the Jaguars when it seemed like he was going to stay, and now, the Bucs have interviewed one of the staff members he brought on. Grizzard served as the team's passing game coordinator and also handled the team's third-down calls, per Coen. He excelled in that area -- the Bucs were the best third-down team in the NFL, converting on it 51 percent of the time. In addition, Grizzard knows the offense well, so continuity may offer him an edge over external candidates. That being said, Grizzard will also be a candidate to head to Jacksonville with Coen. Grizzard would not be able to call plays with the Jaguars, though, so the Bucs do have an intrinsic advantage there. |
Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone interviewed for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offensive coordinator vacancy Tuesday, Jan. 28.
Footballguys view: Liam Coen left to become the Jaguars' head coach late last week, which leaves the Bucs looking for their fourth offensive coordinator in four years. Ragone spent the 2024 season as the quarterbacks coach for the Rams. He was the offensive coordinator for the Falcons for three seasons before joining Sean McVay's staff, and he's also worked for Chicago, Washington, and Tennessee since starting his NFL coaching career in 2011. As Profootballtalk.com notes, Coen once worked for the Rams, and Ragone is the third Rams assistant to interview with Tampa since his departure. Offensive assistant/pass game specialist Nate Scheelhaase and tight ends coach/pass game coordinator Nick Caley met with the team on Monday. The Buccaneers have also interviewed Chargers pass game coordinator Marcus Brady and Vikings assistant offensive coordinator/assistant quarterbacks coach Grant Udinski. |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen was signed to an undisclosed extension that makes him one of the highest-paid coordinators in the league Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Footballguys view: Coen has done great work with QB Baker Mayfield with both the Rams and the Buccaneers. They keep the fit together with Coen signing this extension. Some believe that Coen is a head-coach-in-waiting with the Buccaneers. |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Bucky Irving became the first rookie running back in NFL history to rush for more than 1,100 yards on fewer than 210 attempts.
Footballguys view: Irving was fantastic, and he only played about 45 percent of the snaps for the Buccaneers offense. He can beat teams as a runner or receiver out of the backfield, and Irving could do even more next season. Fantasy GMs will be drafting him as an RB1 in PPR formats. |
Free-agent S Marcus Banks, WR Marquez Callaway, CB Dallis Flowers, DT Mike Greene, OT Garret Greenfield, LB Antonio Grier, LB Daniel Grzesiak, OG Luke Haggard, WR Dennis Houston, LB Deion Jones, WR Tanner Knue, OT Lorenz Metz, OT Raiqwon O'Neal, QB Michael Pratt, TE Tanner Taula, RB DJ X. Williams and S Rashad Wisdom signed Reserve/Future contracts with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tuesday, Jan. 14. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Free-agent LB Deion Jennings signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Wednesday, Jan. 15. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Link to storyTampa Bay lost to Washington 23-20. Baker Mayfield completed 15 of 18 passes for 185 yard and two touchdowns. Bucky Irving ran 17 times for 77 yards and caught two passes for six yards and a score. Mike Evans caught seven balls for 92 yards and a touchdown.
Footballguys view: Mayfield was excellent, but a botched handoff deep in the Bucs end of the field that took the wind out of their sails after a big goal line stop. The Bucs also lost the time of possession battle to long Jayden Daniels led drives, giving Mayfield fewer opportunities to influence the outcome of the game. He has taken a big step forward in every way. Irving will be a second round pick in fantasy drafts this summer after a breakout rookie year. Evans was dominant against Marshon Lattimore and was underrated by fantasy drafters for a second straight season. This offense is prime property in fantasy drafts, but it could lose its offensive coordinator for the second straight year if Liam Coen gets hired as a head coach somewhere. |

Footballguys view: That's two days of missed practice for Evans, but we're not worried. The veteran superstar wide receiver is going up against Commanders CB Marshon Lattimore - always a monumental matchup. He's just getting some veteran rest (again). |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Cade Otton (knee) fully participated in practice Thursday, Jan. 9.
Footballguys view: Good news for the Buccaneers here. Otton could be a relief valve target for QB Baker Mayfield in the Wild Card Round against the Commanders (who love to pressure quarterbacks from the middle). |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Jalen McMillan (finger) fully participated in practice Thursday, Jan. 9.
Link to storyTampa Bay Buccaneers RB Bucky Irving (shin, shoulder) fully participated in practice Thursday, Jan. 9.
Footballguys view: Irving is a little banged up, but he has been for at least a month now. The rookie running back can hurt an opponent as both a runner and receiver out of the backfield. We're certain he's provided some nightmare fuel for the Commanders' defensive coaches this week. |
