Jaguars | Two competing for buck linebacker role Sun May 18, 10:12 AM
Jacksonville Jaguars LBs Devin Lloyd and Jalen McLeod are expected to compete for the buck linebacker position, according to general manager James Gladstone.
Footballguys view: Lloyd was a first-round pick of the Jaguars in the 2022 NFL Draft, while McLeod was a sixth-round pick for the team in the 2025 NFL Draft. McLeod is an interesting prospect coming out of Auburn, and he plays all over the field with a high level of versatility and violence. The Jaguars did not pick up the fifth-year option for Lloyd, arguably their best linebacker over the past two seasons, so he's set to be a free agent in 2026. This battle will take place in training camp with Lloyd the favorite to land the job. |
Jacksonville Jaguars TE Patrick Murtagh was released on Thursday, May 15.
Link to storySources: The Jaguars are signing former Bills TE Quintin Morris to a one-year deal.
Footballguys view: As FOX Sports insider Jordan Schultz noted, Morris, who had three touchdowns over three seasons in Buffalo, is especially valued for his blocking ability. That's a trait Jacksonville's new coaching staff prioritizes in tight ends. Fantasy managers? Not so much. Brenton Strange remains the fantasy target of interest at the position in Jacksonville. |
Jacksonville Jaguars seventh-round draft choice RB LeQuint Allen is 'kind of an interesting player' who can play a little bit of slot, according to head coach Liam Coen.'Then you look at (LeQuint) Allen, kind of an interesting player. Can play a little bit of slot. Move him into the backfield. Obviously, he had 1,000 yards over the last two years, and then he can catch the ball out of the back field. Good in the screen game. Competitor, man,' Coen told SI.com.
Footballguys view: The Jaguars made two additions to their running back room in the 2025 NFL Draft, taking Bhayshul Tuten at the top of the fourth round and doubling up with Allen. While it is clear what Tuten offers in terms of game-breaking speed with his 4.32 40-yard dash, Allen brings something entirely his own to the table: his impact in the passing game. He was not just productive on screens and check-downs, either. He frequently lined up at wide receiver for Syracuse, proving his versatility as a weapon. Allen is one of only two players nationally with 1,000-plus rushing yards (1,021) and 500 receiving yards (521) in the 2024 season. Still, as a seventh-round pick, Allen has much to prove in a backfield with Tuten and veteran holdovers Travis Etienne Jr. and Tank Bigsby. |
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Tank Bigsby is not 'guaranteed' a roster spot for the 2025 season, in the opinion of Jacksonville.com's Demetrius Harvey, who notes that Jacksonville has worked to reshape the offensive line and running back positions following the hiring of new head coach Liam Coen.
Footballguys view: In another effort to reshape the team's running backs room, the Jaguars took two backs in this year's draft. Bhayshul Tuten, drafted out of Virginia Tech, is the most likely to receive extensive playing time. According to Times-Union staffer Demetrius Harvey, head coach Liam Coen's scouting report indicates that Tuten could get some playing time as the team's change-of-pace back but can play all three downs if needed. Jacksonville is entering the year with top backs Travis Etienne and Bigsby on board. Still, given the extensive work the team has done to reshape the offensive line and their running backs room, Harvey contends neither player's roster spot should be guaranteed. We'll monitor this situation closely throughout training camp. |

Josh Alper, from ProFootballTalk.com, reports Jacksonville Jaguars HC Liam Coen says no.2 overall pick WR/CB Travis Hunter will 'start to roll' on defense next week.
Footballguys view: Hunter is an amazing player with a ton of upside as a receiver in the Jagaurs offense. He began his rookie minicamp primarily on the offensive side of the ball, and Coen has previously said that the two-way Colorado superstar is going to mostly be on offense while getting some defensive work too. Hunter will play as large of a role as he possibly can on defense, and the preparation begins this week. |
Jacksonville Jaguars third-round draft choice CB Caleb Ransaw, sixth-round draft choice S Rayuan Lane III and seventh-round draft choice RB LeQuint Allen signed four-year contracts with the Jaguars Friday, May 9. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: We like LeQuint Allen in crazy deep dynasty formats. There's a dash of James Cook to his game, and he can make plays as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. With the future of Travis Etienne unknown, Allen is a player to monitor in training camp. |
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Bhayshul Tuten could 'make an impact' in head coach Liam Coen's offense, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com.

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Travis Etienne is not 'guaranteed' a roster spot heading into the season, in the opinion of Jacksonville.com's Demetrius Harvey, who notes that the team has put a lot of work into reshaping the offensive line and running back rooms under new head coach Liam Coen. That includes drafting RBs Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen.
Footballguys view: Tuten has a ton of speed, and Allen is a player who could thrive on all three downs due to his athleticism and contact balance. If the team moves on from Etienne, those two rookies could play a larger role. |

Jacksonville Jaguars S Caleb Ransaw could have an 'easy' path to a job as one of the team's starting safeties, in the opinion of Jacksonville.com's Demetrius Harvey, who notes the team ranked last in the NFL in pass defense a season ago and lost S Andre Cisco in free agency to the New York Jets.

Link to storyJacksonville Jaguars WR Gabe Davis was released Wednesday, May 7.
Footballguys view: Davis signed a three-year contract with the team as a free agent last offseason, but the Jaguars have changed their head coach and general manager since he arrived, and the move makes it clear he no longer had a spot in the team's plans. Jacksonville also released wide receiver Josh Reynolds and tight end Evan Engram in March. They traded wide receiver Christian Kirk and signed wide receiver Dyami Brown before trading up to take Travis Hunter with the second overall pick in the draft. Hunter and Brian Thomas Jr. will be the top fantasy prospects in this offense. Davis had 20 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games for the Jags. |

Link to storyJacksonville Jaguars WR/CB Travis Hunter will reportedly get the chance to begin his NFL career by working primarily with the team's wide receivers, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Footballguys view: Hunter was arguably the best wide receiver in this class while also being the best cornerback in this class. He wants to play on both sides of the ball full time, and that's a big dream. For now, it seems like Hunter will work mostly on the offensive side while getting defensive reps as a reserve corner. |
Colorado WR/CB Travis Hunter was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the second overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Link to storyUniversity of Colorado WR/CB Travis Hunter appears likely to be the No. 2 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Cleveland Browns hold that pick and are unlikely to trade it away - per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero - but there is a strong sense within the league that the Jacksonville Jaguars are trying to move into that slot to choose Hunter.

Link to storyJacksonville Jaguars WR Gabe Davis was not among the players new head coach Liam Coen mentioned when he was asked about the depth of the receiving room and who the primary options would be for the No. 2 receiving spot.'I think you look naturally right now at Parker Washington and Dyami Brown at the receiver positions. Then saying Brenton Strange hopefully continues to ascend. How do we use our two running backs to be able to supplement some of that usage, get more people involved in the game especially early on, so defenses can't just cloud (Brian Thomas Jr.) and be all over him,' Coen said.
