Jaguars | Brian Thomas' slot work impressed new coach    Wed Jan 29, 11:54 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Brian Thomas Jr. impressed new head coach Lian Coen with his work from the slot last year. 'To be able to put him in a slot and run lookie, run choice, run the option routes, run the middle of the field a little bit,' Coen said of Thomas. 'And then also be able to throw screens to him and he's going to go do something with it.'

Footballguys view: Coen should be able to craft a scheme for QB Trevor Lawrence that gets the best from his targets like Thomas. We could see Thomas playing the Chris Godwin position for Coen as the former Buccaneers assistant created with his former team. Expect Thomas to get fed the ball, from the slot and other spots, in 2025.

Footballguys view: Cooley was hired by Carolina in 2023 when he began with the organization as their secondary/cornerbacks coach. He was promoted to his current passing game coordinator position before the start of the 2024 campaign. Previously a member of the Los Angeles Rams' staff, Cooley has already shared a sideline with new Jaguars head coach Liam Coen. That crossing came in 2022 when Cooley was the defensive backs coach and Coen the offensive coordinator.

Jaguars | Jags building around Trevor Lawrence    Tue Jan 28, 11:21 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence will be the focal point new head coach Liam Coen builds around. 'We've got to make every part of this about improvement, and he will be a part of that process,' Coen said. 'He's earned that right. I cannot respect his toughness and mentality and work ethic more than I do already from afar. This will all be about Trevor right now.'

Footballguys view: The 2021 NFL Draft's No. 1 overall pick, Lawrence, has shown plenty of promise, particularly in a 2022 Pro Bowl season -- his first under previous head coach Doug Pederson. However, he hasn't become the generational talent so many prognosticated. It is handling Lawrence's maturation that was paramount in owner Shad Khan's choice of Coen. "Our commitment to Trevor, I think it's well known. We believe in him, so it started with that," Khan said of the interview process. Considering Coen's work in 2024 with Baker Mayfield and the answers he gave Khan, the Jaguars owner was convinced. Under Coen's one-year watch, the Bucs were a top-four offense in scoring and yards while finishing in the top four in passing and rushing. Furthermore, coming off a Pro Bowl 2023 campaign, Mayfield had a career season in 2024. He threw for personal bests of 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns. Now, Coen will try to duplicate that success in Jacksonville.

Jaguars | Liam Coen reaches agreement to coach Jacksonville    Fri Jan 24, 01:17 PM

Updating previous reports, Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen agreed in principle to become the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, Jan. 23.

Footballguys view: Well now we know what firing Trent Baalke was all about. We can criticize Jaguars owner Shad Khan for initially keeping Baalke, which probably didn't help the head coach search, but when he had a good candidate and learned what he needed to do to finish the job, Khan followed through. The Bucs and Baker Mayfield will have a new offensive coordinator for the third straight year, but Mayfield showed that he isn't just a product of the scheme in 2024. The 49ers are expected to bring back Robert Saleh as defensive coordinator after the Jaguars did not hire him as their next head coach.

Jaguars | Trent Baalke out in Jacksonville    Wed Jan 22, 03:15 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke will not return in 2025, effective immediately, after team owner Shad Khan announced the two sides mutually agreed to part ways on Wednesday, Jan. 22.

Footballguys view: This move has been brewing for some time as the Jaguars look for a new head coach as well. Adding both at the same time makes sense, and it may be Robert Saleh as the favorite for the head coaching vacancy. Khan's press statement said Ethan Waugh will serve as interim GM while the team conducts interviews.

Jaguars | Robert Saleh a favorite with JAX?    Wed Jan 22, 12:36 PM

Former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh is viewed as a potential favorite for the Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching position.

Footballguys view: Jacksonville needs a complete reset, and their defense is one of the worst in the league. Saleh is a defensive minded coach who didn't really have a fair chance with a dysfunctional Jets organization. He could go to Jacksonville and bring a much-needed reset to the culture. More importantly, Saleh would have to find the right offensive staff to get the most out of franchise QB Trevor Lawrence.

Jaguars | Lian Coen out of running for Jags job    Wed Jan 22, 11:03 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen signed an extension with Tampa and removed himself from consideration for the Jacksonville Jaguars' head coaching post.

Footballguys view: Coen was considered the favorite to land the Jaguars job with Ben Johnson taking the Bears job. Instead of advancing to the head coaching ranks, Coen decides to stay with the Buccaneers where he can continue the great work he's done with QB Baker Mayfield. Some believe Coen could essentially be a head-coach-in-waiting with the Buccaneers.

Jaguars | Jacksonville closing in on Liam Coen?    Tue Jan 21, 03:38 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen is scheduled to have a second interview with the Jacksonville Jaguars regarding their head coaching vacancy on Wednesday, Jan. 22. There is speculation that the Jaguars feel strongly enough about Coen that he will be offered the job on Wednesday if the interview goes well.

Footballguys view: Coen, 39, just completed his first year with the Buccaneers, helping the club finish No. 3 in total yards and No. 4 in points en route to winning the NFC South. Profootballtalk.com notes that if the Jaguars hire Coen, it will be the second time in two years that a Bucs offensive coordinator is in the building for just one season before departing to be a head coach. Dave Canales was hired as the Panthers head coach last offseason after spending a year with Tampa Bay. Bucs head coach Todd Bowles has had Byron Leftwich, Canales, and Coen as his offensive coordinators in his three seasons at the helm. Tampa Bay Times staffer Rick Stroud also raises the possibility that the Bucs could offer Bowles a position in the front office and hire Coen to take his place, noting that the club effectively did so with Bruce Arians stepping down as head coach in March 2022 in favor of Bowles. Stay tuned.

Jaguars | Brian Thomas Jr. joined rare group    Thu Jan 16, 11:15 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Brian Thomas Jr. became just the fourth rookie in NFL history to finish with at least 1,200 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.

Footballguys view: Thomas did an amazing job in his rookie season, and he did that with an offense that was going through quarterback injuries. Imagine what he can do with a better head coach, better offense, and a healthy Trevor Lawrence.

Jaguars | Todd Monken interviewing with Jaguars    Thu Jan 16, 08:20 AM

Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken is interviewing for the Jacksonville Jaguars' head coaching vacancy Thursday, Jan. 16.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars could use a better offense moving forward, and they need to find someone who can get the best from QB Trevor Lawrence. Monken has worked well with QB Lamar Jackson to develop him as a passer and make him even more dangerous.

Jaguars | Liam Coen interviews with Jaguars    Wed Jan 15, 03:58 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen interviewed with the Jacksonville Jaguars for their head coach vacancy Wednesday, Jan. 15.

Footballguys view: Coen has done fantastic work with QB Baker Mayfield. He is going to be a head coach someday, and the Jaguars may decide to make him their guy. If hired, Coen would be tasked with getting the most from QB Trevor Lawrence. Like Mayfield, Lawrence is a talented former no.1 overall pick who could use some football rehab.

Jaguars | Vikings DC Brian Flores To Interview With Jacksonville    Tue Jan 14, 03:52 PM

Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores will interview for the Jaguars head coaching job on Friday, a source tells SI.com's Albert Breer. Flores also has interview requests from the Jets and Bears, with scheduling still to be worked on that.

Footballguys view: Flores, 43, has been with Minnesota for the last two seasons as defensive coordinator. Minnesota ranked No. 5 in points allowed and No. 16 in yards allowed in 2024. Flores was previously the Dolphins head coach from 2019-2021, compiling a 24-25 record as head coach with 10-6 and 9-8 records in his last two seasons. We'll continue to watch for more.

Jaguars | Jacksonville meets with Robert Saleh    Tue Jan 14, 01:19 PM

Green Bay Packers offensive consultant Robert Saleh completed an interview with the Jacksonville Jaguars regarding their head coaching vacancy on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Footballguys view: Saleh was hired by the Jets in 2021 and went 20-36 before being fired five games into the 2024 season. As Profootballtalk.com reported, he's also scheduled to interview for the Raiders as a head coach, and he interviewed with the 49ers for their defensive coordinator job. Saleh held that job with the 49ers before being hired by the Jets. Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, and Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo are the others who have interviewed with the Jaguars.

Jaguars | Jacksonville seeks Steve Spagnuolo interview    Thu Jan 9, 11:38 AM

Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was requested to interview with the Jacksonville Jaguars for their head coach vacancy Thursday, Jan. 9.

Footballguys view: There are now three teams to request an interview with Spagnuolo (Jaguars, Jets, Raiders). The former Rams head coach from 2009-2011 (also the Giants' interim head coach in 2017) has a career record of 11-41.

Jaguars | Jacksonville Announces Full List Of Head Coaching Candidates    Tue Jan 7, 11:08 AM

On Tuesday, the Jaguars announced a list of interview requests for their head coaching vacancy. It includes several previously reported names and a handful of new ones. The latter category includes former Jets head coach Robert Saleh.

Footballguys view: Saleh was fired five games into this season and has been working with the Packers for the last couple of months, which is why there's a need to request an interview. Saleh was 20-36 in three-plus seasons with the Jets. The other new names that the Jaguars shared are Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, and Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, and Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn are the other identified candidates.

Jaguars | Aaron Glenn to meet with JAX    Tue Jan 7, 09:51 AM

Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn will have a virtual interview for the Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching vacancy this week.

Footballguys view: According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Glenn will also be interviewed by the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, and Chicago Bears regarding their respective head coach openings. All of the interviews will be virtual, per NFL rules, and they reportedly will take place from Thursday through Saturday. Teams will have to wait until after the Lions are eliminated from the playoffs to offer Glenn a deal, but it's clear that he will have multiple options as he tries to transition to a head coach this offseason. The Jaguars will also interview Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen.
