Lions | Jake Bates expected to join DET    Sat Jun 15, 12:22 PM

Free-agent PK Jake Bates (Texans) is expected to sign with the Detroit Lions, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Bates might even get the same locker he had for the UFL Michigan Panthers, who played in Ford Field this spring. Bates will be in a kicker battle with Michael Badgley, and the winner will have fantasy value because they'll kick indoors for all but three games this year, cleaning up after one of the NFL's best offenses.

Lions | Hendon Hooker pushing for backup role    Sun Jun 9, 09:12 AM

Detroit Lions QB Hendon Hooker needs to 'take a step up' to secure the backup quarterback job from QB Nate Sudfeld, according to head coach Dan Campbell. 'We need to feel like by the end of camp this guy can run this offense,' Campbell said.

Footballguys view: We love Hooker in dynasty formats. He had first-round talent, but Hooker fell to the third round of the 2023 NFL draft due to an untimely knee injury. Last year was a 'redshirt' year for Hooker, and now he's ready to push for a backup job to Jared Goff. In fact, Hooker has the talent to be a quality starter in this league if he ever gets a chance....in Detroit or elsewhere.

Lions | Jahmyr Gibbs injury update    Wed Jun 5, 01:03 PM

Detroit Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs (undisclosed) is dealing with an unspecified soft-tissue injury, head coach Dan Campbell revealed on Wednesday, June 5.

Footballguys view: Gibbs will be brought back cautiously as he deals with this soft-tissue injury. Earlier this offseason, Lions running backs coach Scottie Montgomery believed that Gibbs can go from a 'really efficient check-down option' to a player who can 'go into the slot and a little bit more down the field.' Gibbs needs to be healthy to see this unique usage in the passing game.

Lions | Sam LaPorta back at practice    Sat Jun 1, 12:22 PM

Detroit Lions TE Sam LaPorta (undisclosed) returned to practice during organized team activities on Wednesday, May 30, after sitting out the week before.

Footballguys view: The injury is undisclosed, but it's good for LaPorta to get back out there. Fantasy GMs love what he can do, and he's going off the board as the number 1 or number 2 tight end in fantasy drafts. As explosive as the Lions' offense was last year, it could be even more this year.

Lions | Ennis Rakestraw Jr. under contract    Fri May 31, 03:08 PM

Lions | More unique usage ahead for Jahmyr Gibbs?    Fri May 31, 01:09 PM

Detroit Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs was a very good receiver as a rookie last season (52 catches on 71 targets), but the hope for running backs coach Scottie Montgomery is that Gibbs can go from a 'really efficient check-down option' to a player who can 'go into the slot and a little bit more down the field.''Now what we need him to do from a passing game standpoint is go to the next level. I do think there's a certain difference between being a really efficient check-down versus a great route-runner, a guy that can run all types of choice (routes). We know we've seen him do those things. But now can you go into the slot and a little bit more down the field, some intermediate stuff. Can we continue to grow him there, and that's what we're trying to do,' Montgomery said.

Footballguys view: Gibbs could push for over 1,000 yards rushing with at least a few hundred yards receiving as well in 2024. Going for around 1,500 all-purpose yards sounds about right for the explosive second-year back. Add in 10-12 touchdowns, and you can see why Gibbs is going off the board as a top-5 fantasy back.

Lions | Hendon Hooker turns heads    Sun May 26, 04:18 PM

Detroit Lions QB Hendon Hooker had a solid showing at organized team activities on Thursday, May 23, with one of his deep balls creating buzz among teammates.

Footballguys view: Hooker turning heads is excellent. But the Lions signed starter Jared Goff to a four-year, $212 million contract extension that includes $170 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid player in franchise history. Barring injury, Hooker's immediate future is serving as Goff's understudy.

Lions | Hendon Hooker taking part in workouts    Fri May 24, 12:42 AM

Detroit Lions QB Hendon Hooker (knee) is participating in the offseason workouts despite missing most of the 2023 season.

Footballguys view: Hooker is a player we love in dynasty formats. He had first-round potential, but a knee injury his final season at the University of Tennessee caused him to fall to the third round. The Lions have Jared Goff entrenched as the starer, but Hooker is a developmental backup with the upside to one day be a quality starter himself.

Lions | GM Holmes Says Jahmyr Gibbs' Workload Will Increase This Year    Tue May 14, 05:33 PM

The Detroit Lions have one of the best one-two punches at running back in the league with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, who combined for nearly 2,000 rushing yards and almost 2,400 scrimmage yards last season. Looking ahead to 2024, it appears Gibbs' workload will increase, as general manager Brad Holmes said on the "Rich Eisen Show" recently. "I definitely would expect (Gibbs) to see more of a load, but David Montgomery will still be here, too," Holmes said. "Dan [Campbell] and I love that one-two punch of him and David... I think he's got much more to offer in the passing game, so most likely you'll see an increase in that, as well."

Footballguys view: As TSN's Mike Moraitis reminded readers, drafting Gibbs in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft was a bit of a head-scratcher when it first happened, as not only was the No. 12 pick very early to take a running back, but the Lions had just signed Montgomery earlier in the offseason. But questions about the pick diminished after Gibbs' first season, in which he tallied 1,261 yards from scrimmage and 11 touchdowns. In addition, Gibbs was third among running backs with 5.2 yards per carry last season. More of that kind of production should keep the Lions offense near the top of the league in 2024. It should also keep fantasy managers investing RB1 draft capital to secure Gibbs' services happy as well.

Lions | More work in 2024 for Jahmyr Gibbs?    Tue May 14, 04:48 PM

Detroit Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs should expect to 'see more of a load' in 2024, according to general manager Brad Holmes on a recent appearance of The Rich Eisen Show.'I definitely would expect him to see more of a load, but David Montgomery will still be here too. Dan (Campbell) and I love that 1-2 punch of him and David. But just speaking on, specifically, him being a rookie last year, even when he had some pops in (last year's season opener), I was watching, I was like, 'He's still trying to get the feel of the game.' He was playing very fast, and he actually kind of needed to slow down a little bit . . . But once he got that sweet spot, you kind of saw it in the (Baltimore) Ravens game, which unfortunately we didn't show up very well for that game, but that's when you started seeing some glimpses of, 'I think it's coming, I think it's coming,' Then, obviously, that (Las Vegas) Raiders game where I believe everyone saw the breakout. . . . I think he has much more to offer in the passing game, so most likely you'll see an increase in that as well,' Holmes said.

Lions | Jared Goff Gets Four-Year, $212 Million Extension    Mon May 13, 06:04 PM

The Lions are signing QB Jared Goff to a four-year, $212 million contract extension that includes $170 million guaranteed, sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Footballguys view: Goff now goes from former No. 1 overall pick to highest-paid Lion in franchise history. It's an excellent story for Goff, who was the afterthought in the Matthew Stafford trade and has found a home with a high-end future in Detroit. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the deal puts Goff under contract through 2027 with an option for 2028, per source. The Lions now have awarded over $444 million in contract extension this offseason to three players: Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown (four years, $120.01 million), and OT Penei Sewell (four years, $112 million). Despite his QB7 finish in 2023, Goff remains a value this year. You'll currently find him as QB16 on the 2024 Footballguys Draft Rankings. That's also his Average Draft Position in ongoing best-ball drafts on Underdog. He's not without upside at that price.

Lions | Parker Hesse signs with Lions    Mon May 13, 11:29 AM

Free-agent TE Parker Hesse (Falcons) was signed to an undisclosed deal by the Detroit Lions Monday, May 13, after taking part in the team's minicamp.

Footballguys view: Hesse made eight starts and appeared in 28 games with the Atlanta Falcons in 2021-23, but he's nothing more than depth in Detroit. The Lions returned their top three tight ends from last season in Sam LaPorta, Brock Wright, and James Mitchell, but had just two other tight ends under contract -- Shane Zylstra and undrafted free agent Isaac Rex. Remember, the 49ers signed Wright, a restricted free agent, to a three-year, $12 million offer sheet in March that included $6 million guaranteed. The Lions matched the offer, keeping Wright on the roster. Even with Detroit's level of commitment there, fantasy managers shouldn't be looking beyond LaPorta for viable options.

Free-agent WR Kaden Davis (Cardinals) signed an undisclosed deal with the Detroit Lions following a tryout at the team's rookie minicamp, according to sources Sunday, May 12.

Detroit Lions RB Sione Vaki was a 'beast on special teams' during the first day of rookie minicamp, according to Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com, and general manager Brad Holmes said Vaki was the best special teams player in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Vaki was also listed exclusively at running back after being a two-way player and all-Pac 12 safety at Utah. If multiple injuries strike in the Lions backfield, remember his name.
