Bears | D'Andre Swift likely to return for 2025 Mon Feb 24, 11:18 AM
Chicago Bears RB D'Andre Swift is expected to be on the team's roster in 2025, despite an underwhelming 2024 campaign statistically, according to ESPN.com's Dan Graziano. He is slated to make $8 million during the upcoming season, of which $6.11 million is fully guaranteed.
Footballguys view: Swift did not produce in the expected way last season, but the team has a contract situation that keeps him around for another year. We'll see if the Bears add another running back to the mix in the draft, as this is an incredibly deep class at the position. |

Link to storyChicago Bears TE Gerald Everett could be a candidate to be released this offseason because the team would save $5.5 million if they let him go, in the opinion of BearsWire's Brendan Sugrue.

Chicago Bears WR Rome Odunze should receive a bigger role next season even if the team re-sign WR Keenan Allen or sign another veteran receiver, in the opinion of BearsWire's Mike Pendleton.
Link to storyChicago Bears impending free-agent WR Keenan Allen probably will not return to the Bears unless he is opening to signing a one-year contract with a team-friendly salary, in the opinion of BearsWire's Alyssa Barbieri.
Footballguys view: Visions of Allen in the Amon-Ra St. Brown role in Ben Johnson's offense should be dashed by this item, if it wasn't already obvious that Allen wasn't likely to return. DJ Moore is also well-suited for the role and unlike Allen, he is in his prime. Moore could blow away his early 4th/5th round ADP with Allen gone. Rome Odunze is also set to go lower than he did in 2024 fantasy drafts, which could present major value with Allen gone. |

Chicago Bears impending free-agent OG Teven Jenkins likely will be allowed to test free agency since neither side seems very interested in a contract extension.
Footballguys view: Jenkins has been a starter at guard for the Bears, but the offensive line was a weak link for the team so it's not surprising that the team doesn't want to keep the band together. New head coach Ben Johnson had the luxury of one of the best lines in the league in Detroit and will surely prioritize the line in offseason acquisitions via free agency and the draft. |
Chicago Bears restricted free-agent CB Josh Blackwell is expected to return to the team next season.
Link to storyChicago Bears QB Caleb Williams was sacked 68 times during the 2024 season, which led the NFL in that category and was sacked 15 more times than the second quarterback on the list.

Link to storyFormer Indianapolis Colts linebackers coach Richard Smith was hired to the same post with the Chicago Bears on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Link to storyFormer Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is joining the Chicago Bears as their new running backs coach, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Bieniemy was a head coach candidate not all that long ago, and then after an unsuccessful year as the Washington offensive coordinator, he had an unsuccessful year as the UCLA offensive coordinator. He had been successful in his position coach and coordinator jobs before that, and this should be seen as a good thing for D'Andre Swift and any running back that the Bears sign or draft. This is also an indication of Ben Johnson's sway to get experienced coaches on the first staff he will lead as a head coach. |
Free-agent WR Maurice Alexander signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Chicago Bears Friday, Jan. 31. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Link to storyFormer Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Press Taylor is being hired by the Chicago Bears as their passing game coordinator, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Taylor has learned under Doug Pederson for years in two stops (Eagles, Jaguars). Now, Taylor will help the Bears get the most from QB Caleb Williams. |
The Chicago Bears are hiring Declan Doyle to serve as the team's new offensive coordinator, according to NFL Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. Doyle previously served as the tight ends coach for the Denver Broncos.
Footballguys view: The Bears offense is still expected to largely be Ben Johnson's design, with the new head coach having said he'll continue to call plays, but Doyle is considered an up-and-coming coaching star in the business. |
The Chicago Bears are hiring Dennis Allen to fill the team's vacant defensive coordinator position, sources said Sunday, Jan. 26.
Footballguys view: Allen most recently served as head coach of the Saints from the start of the 2022 season until he was fired after the Saints' Week 9 loss. He was also a head coach for the Raiders from 2012 to 2014. Allen was a defensive coordinator twice, in 2011 with the Broncos and the Saints, from 2015 to 2021. The Saints ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in points and yards allowed in his final two seasons as DC and in his first as head coach in 2022. |

Link to storyFree-agent OT Joshua Miles and S Alex Cook signed Reserve/Future contracts with the Chicago Bears Wednesday, Jan. 22. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Link to storyUpdating a previous report, Detroit Lions office coordinator Ben Johnson signed an undisclosed contract to become the new head coach of the Chicago Bears on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Footballguys view: Johnson, known for his innovative playcalling, has coached the Lions to top-10 offenses the past two seasons, including second overall and No. 1 in points scored in 2024. More to the point, the Lions averaged at least 26 points per game in each of Johnson's three seasons at the helm. The Bears have had four such seasons in the entire Super Bowl era (1985, 2006, 2013, and 2018). While there are issues on the offensive line, expecting Johnson to maximize the abilities of Caleb Williams, DJ Moore, Rome Odunze, and other components here is reasonable. |
The Bears are finalizing a deal to hire Ben Johnson as their head coach, sources tell NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Johnson is set to fly there soon, and contract parameters are in place. Barring a last-minute snag, the Lions OC lands with an NFC North rival.
Footballguys view: Multiple outlets are reporting the news, with Pelissero and ESPN's Adam Schefter both reporting that Johnson has already been lining up staff, and former Saints head coach Dennis Allen is a prime candidate to be Johnson's defensive coordinator in Chicago. Johnson has been a hot head coaching candidate for the last couple of years but passed on previous opportunities to leave the Lions. As Profootballtalk.com suggested, it seems the chance to work with quarterback Caleb Williams while remaining in the familiar confines of the NFC North was enough of a lure to get him to move on. Reports last week indicated that the Raiders were also pursuing Johnson for their head coaching vacancy, but Vegas will now have to move in a different direction as they look for Antonio Pierce's successor. |
Caleb Williams player page
Updating a previous report, Tennessee State University head coach Eddie George completed an interview with the Chicago Bears for their vacant head coach position Sunday, Jan. 19.
Footballguys view: There was a report that the Bears were going to interview some unconventional candidates for their head coach job, and George certainly qualifies. Mike McCarthy is considered one of the favorites to get the job along with Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, but the fact that the team interviewed George could be a sign that they haven't settled on a final choice to make an offer to yet. |

Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams (hand) recently had a cyst removed from his right hand but will be fine moving forward.
Footballguys view: Williams is looking for a better season - with better coaching - in 2025. He's talented as a passer and can use his legs to attack a defense. However, the Bears need the coaching staff to maximize his skill set and keep pressure away from him as much as possible. It's all about 'fit' in the NFL, and the top priority for the Bears is to find that with Williams. |
Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken will interview for the Chicago Bears' head coaching vacancy Friday, Jan. 17.
Footballguys view: Bears QB Caleb Williams is looking for an offensive minded coach, and Monken would fit the bill. The Bears need to find Williams a coach that can develop his skill. Monken has done great work with Lamar Jackson, and now Jackson is even more dangerous as a passer. |
Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith interviewed with the Chicago Bears for their head coach vacancy, the team announced Wednesday, Jan. 15.
Footballguys view: Smith can run an offense with a certain amount of success, like he did with the Steelers and the Titans. As a head coach with the Falcons, Smith was under .500 for three consecutive seasons. The Bears need to maximize the potential of QB Caleb Williams, and perhaps Smith would be the guy to do that. |
Former Stanford head coach and current Denver Broncos senior personnel executive David Shaw completed his interview with the Chicago Bears regarding their head coaching vacancy on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
Link to storyFormer Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy still has interest from the Chicago Bears for their head coach vacancy, according to sources Monday, Jan. 13.
Link to storyChicago Bears interim head coach Thomas X. Brown is interviewing Monday, Jan. 13, for the full-time position with the Bears.
Footballguys view: The Bears are interviewing a ton of candidates. There has been buzz that unexpected names will be in play, and Mike McCarthy has been mentioned as a possibility after he and the Cowboys failed to sign a new contract before his previous deal expired. Brown's stint as interim head coach was generally seen in a positive light, but it probably wasn't impressive enough to get the team to drop interim from the title. |

The Chicago Bears conducted an interview with Ron Rivera for the team's vacant head coaching position on Sunday, Jan. 12. The former head coach of the Carolina Panthers and Washington Commanders also played for the Bears in his career.
Footballguys view: Rivera is unlikely to get the job, but the Bears decision making with coaching hires has skewed conservatively and he could be paired with an offensive coordinator chosen specifically to work with Caleb Williams. |
Former Los Angeles Chargers OG Jordan McFadden was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Bears Friday, Jan. 10, according to a source.
Link to storyMiami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver interviewed with the Chicago Bears for their head coach vacancy Thursday, Jan. 9.

Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury has been requested for an interview for the Chicago Bears head coaching vacancy.
Footballguys view: Kingsbury coached Caleb Williams at USC, so this connection is one that makes a lot of sense. The Commanders have turned around their offense this year, and Kingsbury is doing a great job getting the best from rookie QB Jayden Daniels. The Bears are considering about a dozen candidates, but Kingsbury might be the favorite. |

Free-agent TE Jordan X. Murray signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Chicago Bears Tuesday, Jan. 7. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy was denied an interview with the Chicago Bears for their head coach vacancy, according to sources Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Footballguys view: The Cowboys have plans for McCarthy, and they have an exclusive negotiating window with him until January 14th. We'll see if they can get a contract done before that deadline. The Bears have about a dozen coaching candidates they're considering for their opening. |
Former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll will interview with the Chicago Bears for their head coach vacancy Thursday, Jan. 9.
Footballguys view: The Bears are looking at several options for their opening, and Carroll is among the most decorated. The 73-year old was a consultant for the Seahawks in 2024, but he seemingly has the energy to get back into the game as a head coach again. With years of playoff success and a Super Bowl title with the Seahawks, the Bears might decide he's the right man for the job. |
Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn will have a virtual interview for the Chicago Bears head coaching vacancy this week.
Footballguys view: According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Glenn will also be interviewed by the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, and Jacksonville Jaguars regarding their respective head coach openings. All of the interviews will be virtual, per NFL rules, and they reportedly will take place from Thursday through Saturday. Teams will have to wait until after the Lions are eliminated from the playoffs to offer Glenn a deal, but it's clear that he will have multiple options as he tries to transition to a head coach this offseason. It's been widely believed the Bears will look at offensive-minded coaches, but they are including former Titans head coach Mike Vrabel and Glenn in the processs. |

Former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel will interview for the Chicago Bears head coaching vacancy Wednesday, Jan. 8.
Footballguys view: NFL Network's Ian Rappaport notes that the consensus has been that Vrabel will land the Patriots job. New England fired Jerod Mayo on Monday. But this will be his second interview with a different organization: First the Jets, now the Bears. Despite being defensive-minded, Vrabel is a highly regarded coach in the NFL, and his firing from Tennessee was a mild surprise. Most Bears fans may prefer an offensive-minded head coach to pair with ascending quarterback Caleb Williams, but SI.com contends if Vrabel ends up being the guy, it's hard to fault the Bears for that. He has head coaching experience and can be the kind of culture setter the players have openly demanded. The Bears also added one more interview to their docket late Monday. They requested an interview with David Shaw, the former head coach of Stanford and current executive for the Broncos. We'll continue watching. |

Free-agent OT Theo Benedet, OG Chris Glaser, WR John Jackson, LB Carl Jones, DE Jamree Kromah, QB Austin Reed, C Ricky Stromberg, WR Samori Toure and TE Joel Wilson signed Reserve/Future contracts with the Chicago Bears Monday, Jan. 6. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy was requested to interview with the Chicago Bears for their head coach vacancy, according to sources Monday, Jan. 6.
Footballguys view: With Jerry Jones dragging his feet on deciding McCarthy's future in Dallas, the Bears have reached out to interview McCarthy. If the Cowboys don't allow permission this week, the Bears could interview McCarthy after his exclusive negotiating window with Dallas expires Jan. 14. As SI.com suggests, it would undoubtedly be an interesting twist to the McCarthy saga. It could give Dallas a way out without burning any bridges. We'll be watching for more. |
Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith was requested to interview with the Chicago Bears for their head coach vacancy, according to sources Monday, Jan. 6.
Footballguys view: Smith, who is also set to interview with the New York Jets, joins a list that includes interim head coach Thomas Brown, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, Arizona Cardinals Drew Petzing,Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, and Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Like Flores, Smith has head coaching experience with the Falcons. |
Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores was requested to interview with the Chicago Bears for their head coach vacancy, according to sources Monday, Jan. 6.
Footballguys view: Chicago has also requested interviews with Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, Arizona Cardinals Drew Petzing, and Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. Flores has head coaching experience from his stint with the Dolphins. We'll continue to watch for more. |
New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was requested to interview with the Chicago Bears for their head coach vacancy, according to sources Monday, Jan. 6.
Footballguys view: The list to fill the opening left when Matt Eberflus was fired during the regular season continues to grow. Chicago has requested interviews with Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, Arizona Cardinals Drew Petzing, and Kafka. General manager Ryan Poles also confirmed Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown will get a formal interview for the permanent role. While Kafka has coached a struggling Giants offense, he's still widely considered a respected offensive mind, so it makes sense that the Bears would take the time to talk to him about the opening, as developing quarterback Caleb Williams is paramount. Not to mention, there's a local connection with Kafka, being from the Chicago area and attending Northwestern, which Poles love. |

Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing has been requested for an interview for the Chicago Bears head coaching post.
Footballguys view: The Bears are looking to fill a vacancy created when they fired Matt Eberflus during the regular season. Petzing just completed his second season running the offense in Arizona. The team made significant strides in terms of both total yards and points scored with quarterback Kyler Murray available for the entire year, but a 2-5 close to the year meant that the Cardinals fell short of advancing to the postseason. With the Cardinals done playing, Petzing will be available to speak with the Bears and any other interested teams later this week. Chicago has also requested interviews with Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, and Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver. Broncos coordinator Vance Joseph has also been mentioned as a candidate. We'll continue to follow this process as it plays out in coming days. |
Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver has been requested for an interview for the Chicago Bears' head coaching vacancy.
Footballguys view: According to multiple reports, the Bears have requested interviews with Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, and Weaver. Broncos coordinator Vance Joseph has also been mentioned as a candidate, although Weaver, Johnson, and Glenn can interview immediately. Weaver just finished his first season in Miami, and he spent the previous three seasons on John Harbaugh's staff in Baltimore. We'll continue to follow this process as it plays out in coming days. |
