Rams | Aaron Rodgers could come cheap for Rams Wed Feb 26, 12:51 PM
Free-agent QB Aaron Rodgers (Jets) could be cheap if the Los Angeles Rams opt to sign him, according to sources.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford is likely to remain with the team, in the opinion of SNY's Connor Hughes. Hughes opines that Stafford's ability to talk with other teams is to determine his value, which the Rams would likely offer in a revised deal.
Footballguys view: This Stafford deal is all over the place. There are reports about three of four teams being interested in Stafford, and a market price is being determined. He wants a deal that pays him $50 million per year, and he might be able to get that number. Now, the Rams may be considering hanging onto him. As always, the truth will come out so stay tuned. |

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford and his representation have reportedly been in contact with Las Vegas Raiders minority owner Tom Brady in recent days, according to multiple sources. Per Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Raiders have 'a massive need at quarterback and want to address it this offseason,' which makes it possible the team is willing to meet Stafford's contract demands at a level the Rams are not.
Footballguys view: The Raiders have been rumored to be in on Stafford as they look for a starting quarterback. This makes four teams (Steelers, Browns, Giants) as possible teams that trade for Stafford...if he's available. The latest in this saga has the Rams keeping Stafford. Who knows what his future holds, so stay tuned. |

New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers, who is expected to be released at some point this offseason, reportedly prefers to sign with the Los Angeles Rams if Matthew Stafford is traded, according to multiple sources. Furthermore, multiple sources suggest Rodgers could convince WR Davante Adams, who is scheduled to count $38.34 million against New York's salary cap in 2025, to join him with the Rams in the likely event Adams is released.
Footballguys view: Adams and Rodgers seem like a package deal no matter where he lands (expect maybe the Raiders?). The Rams have to move on from Stafford first before they consider adding Rodgers. After that, we'll see if Adams follows his friend to his new team. |

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (knee) 'has a chance' to be ready for the start of the team's offseason program in April, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
Footballguys view: McCarthy is set to take over the Vikings this year as their starting quarterback. Sam Darnold did an admirable job for the team in 2024, but they fell short of expectations in the playoffs and he may leave in free agency. McCarthy, their 2024 first-round pick, has been recovering from this knee injury since suffering it during his rookie preseason debut. |
Updating a previous report, Miami (Fla.) QB Cam Ward remains undecided on whether he'll throw at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, who noted Ward is preparing as though he will participate in drills.
Footballguys view: Ward is arguably the top quarterback in this draft class. It's either him or Shedeur Sanders from Colorado, who has already chosen not to throw at the Combine. With these top prospects, it's not uncommon for them to wait for their Pro Day to perform in front of NFL scouts. |
University of Texas QB Quinn Ewers intends to throw at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, who added Ewers is fully recovered from an oblique injury suffered Sept. 7.
Footballguys view: Ewers is trying climb the draft board in the 2025 NFL draft. Currently seen as a mid-round pick, Ewers was considered to be a first-round prospect before the 2024 season. During his final year with the Longhorns, Ewers struggled with decision making under duress and accuracy in the short-to-intermediate range. Any team that drafts him will have to be the right fit for a passer who loves to attack downfield - and has the deep ball accuracy to do so. |
Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix (undisclosed) is working out at the team facility after an undisclosed procedure earlier this offseason, general manager George Paton said Tuesday, Feb. 25.
Footballguys view: It is not related to the fractures in his back suffered during the NFL season. Head coach Sean Payton previously said Nix was dealing with turf toe, but it's unclear if that is related to the procedure. |
Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson will indeed face an open competition for the starting job after previous speculation, general manager Chris Ballard confirmed Tuesday, Feb. 25. The Colts will bring in a player to challenge him, likely in free agency, according to The Athletic's Zak Keefer.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford has received trade interest from the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders.
Footballguys view: Another day, and more Stafford news coming out of the NFL. Stafford would immediately make a team like the Steelers Super Bowl contenders. The Giants, Browns, and Raiders have further to go but he's a clear upgrade over what they've got or any options they could have. We'll see if some team is interested in making a trade with the Rams. |

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent QB Trey Lance probably will not return to the Cowboys next season, according to Cowboys chief operating officer Stephen Jones.
Footballguys view: When Dak Prescott was banged up, the Cowboys turned to Cooper Rush instead of Lance. That's pretty much all you have to say about the former no.3 overall pick. He's busted with the 49ers, and Lance could barely see the field with the Cowboys. His physical tools will have some team interested, but the days of looking at him as a potential starter are over. |

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford is seeking a new contract that pays him $50 million annually, according to sources Monday, Feb. 24.
Footballguys view: There are rumblings that at least three teams have expressed interest in trading for Stafford. If some team adds him via trade, they will most likely have a contract situation already in mind. The Steelers, Raiders, and Giants are among the teams rumored to be interested in the veteran quarterback. |

Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart, Alabama QB Jalen Milroe and Notre Dame QB Riley Leonard are expected to throw at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Footballguys view: Dart is a darling of some in the draftnik community. He's a toosly quarterback, but perhaps not quite a first-round pick. Milroe has incredible physical tools, but he's not polished as a passer - which likely makes him a Day 2 pick. Leonard has all the leadership qualities teams love, but he might end up as a Day 3 selection. All three have something to prove, and that's why they're throwing at the Combine. |
Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders plans to only participate in team interviews during the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine and will not participate in on-field drills. He does plan to throw at his Pro Day.
Footballguys view: There are four draftable receivers from Colorado that Sanders knows well. He's an advanced passer when it comes to accuracy and pass placement, so Sanders is likely to perform at a high level during his pro day. Teams need to interview Sanders more than they need to see him throw after over 900 passing attempts the last two seasons with the Buffaloes. |
Cleveland Browns impending free-agent QB Jameis Winston said one of his goals moving forward is to limit the critical mistakes he makes during games.

Las Vegas Raiders QB Gardner Minshew is a candidate to be released this offseason, in the opinion of The Athletic's Tashan Reed. According to Spotrac, the Raiders would only free up $3 million of salary cap space and take a dead money hit of $10.82 million if he is released prior to June 1. However, if he is let go after that date, Las Vegas would free up $6 million in cap space and be able to spread the dead money hit over two seasons, with $7.82 million being applied in 2025 and the remaining amount in 2026.

Updating previous reports, Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold is unlikely to receive the franchise tag, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on SportsCenter. 'I'm told that the Minnesota Vikings are open to doing a deal with Sam Darnold,' Fowler said. 'People I've talked to around the league believe that the franchise tag is not the likeliest path that Minnesota would take. That's a high number of around $40 million. So, Minnesota's stance seems to be that they're not going to mortgage the future for Sam Darnold,'

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford and the team have had multiple discussions about upgrading Stafford's contract, which calls for him to make $35 million in 2025 - none of which is guaranteed. However, in the opinion of ESPN's Adam Schefter, former New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers would be 'thrilled with the idea of going to Los Angeles' if Stafford is traded.

Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff will remain the focal point of the offense, according to new offensive coordinator John Morton. Morton spent a year as senior offensive assistant in 2022. 'I think it's big because it all starts with the quarterback,' Morton said. 'Just kind of knowing him -- and when I was here, I was in the quarterback room. So, I have a feel of what he likes, what he doesn't. That's important as a play-caller. We'll continue here when the players come back and stuff, so I'll get to know more about him and the plays that he really likes a lot and what they've been doing good here.'

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr has $10 million guaranteed for 2025 with another $30 million scheduled to kick in March 15. His release would only save his cap-strapped team a couple of million dollars and the team is unlikely to be in a position to draft a blue-chip quarterback, which makes it likely that Carr will remain the starting quarterback for at least one more season.

Former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey is finalizing a deal to be hired by the Dallas Cowboys for an undisclosed role, according to sources Monday, Feb. 10.
Footballguys view: As Profootballtalk.com pointed out, the Cowboys initially hired current head coach Brian Schottenheimer as a coaching analyst in 2022, so Dorsey may start in a similar role with the Cowboys. Or maybe he's the hire for quarterback coach, an opening that's not yet filled. Dorsey interviewed for the offensive coordinator position that went to Klayton Adams. The Browns fired Dorsey as their offensive coordinator after the season. Cleveland finished the season 28th in yards and 32nd in points. Dorsey was Buffalo's offensive coordinator from 2022 before the Bills fired him midway through the 2023 season. Schottenheimer will call the plays for the Cowboys in 2025. |

San Francisco 49ers assistant head coach Brandon Staley is expected to become the defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints after Kellen Moore signs his deal as the new head coach, according to sources Monday, Feb. 10.
Footballguys view: The Saints haven't officially hired Kellen Moore as their new head coach, but once that happens, Staley will be a top candidate to run the defense. Moore was Staley's offensive coordinator in Los Angeles in 2023. Staley had the No. 1 defense with the Rams in 2020, which he parlayed into the Chargers' head coaching job in 2021. He spent last season as assistant head coach of the 49ers. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that the Saints also have interest in Bucs outside linebackers coach George Edwards for the position. We'll watch for more. |

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent QB Russell Wilson is expected to be an option for the New York Giants if he hits the free-agent market, according to ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler.
Footballguys view: Any available veteran with a pulse is fair game for a team with only Tommy DeVito under contract. It's worth noting that Wilson seems eager to return to Pittsburgh, and talks with the Steelers are ongoing. The Raiders have also been mentioned as a possible destination if things don't work out between Wilson and the Steelers. |
