Saints | New Orleans not considering Aaron Rodgers    Sun May 18, 04:02 PM

Free-agent QB Aaron Rodgers (Jets) has not been considered as a possible option for the New Orleans Saint after QB Derek Carr's retirement.

Footballguys view: When Carr retired, the news machine quickly went to the unsigned Rodgers as an option. That always seemed like media hype more than reality. The Saints seem comfortable with a quarterback group including Spencer Rattler, rookie Tyler Shough, and Jake Haener as starting options. The starting job will be hammered out in training camp and the preseason.

49ers | Monster extension for Brock Purdy    Sat May 17, 12:07 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension with the 49ers Friday, May 16, worth $265 million. The deal includes $181 million in guaranteed money, and Purdy will receive $165.05 million in the first three years of the extension.

Footballguys view: For Purdy, "Mr. Irrelevant" as the last pick in the 2022 NFL draft, the new contract will go down as one of the biggest raises in NFL history. Under the terms of his rookie deal, he was set to count just $5.365 million against the cap in 2025. The new deal should come as no surprise. Since he took over as the starter for an injured Garoppolo in Week 13 of 2022, including playoffs, the Niners are 27-15 in games Purday started. In that time, he ranks third in the NFL in passing yards (9,452), first in yards per attempt (8.9) and seventh in touchdown passes (64). In 2024, playing missing key members of his supporting cast, including Christian McCaffrey (Achilles, knee), Brandon Aiyuk (knee), Trent Williams (ankle), tight end George Kittle (hamstring), and receiver Deebo Samuel (calf, illness, ribs) for varying amounts of time, Purdy finished as fantasy's QB13. He sits at QB14 on the 2025 Footballguys Projections. Investors could do worse for their QB2 this year.

Saints | Two teams inquired about Derek Carr before retirement?    Fri May 16, 01:21 PM

Retired New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr was reportedly receiving some interest from at least two teams around the start of free agency in March, more than a month before he announced his retirement due to a shoulder issue.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Carr didn't seem to be on good terms with new Saints HC Kellen Moore, and some out there are questioning if his retirement is all health related. Could he return in 2026? Some think that's unlikely, but things change quickly in this league. If Carr wants to play in the future after taking a break in 2025, a few teams would have interest again.

Giants | Redshirt year for Jaxson Dart?    Fri May 16, 02:00 AM

New York Giants QB Jaxson Dart will likely sit the entire 2025 season 'if all goes well,' according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: The Giants have an interesting quarterback situation, and they have a head coach (Brian Daboll) and general manager (Joe Schoen) who are likely on the hot seat. The team moved back into the first round to select Dart, and he's clearly seen as the quarterback of the future - we just don't know if the coach and the GM will be around for that future. The Giants could roll with Russell Wilson as the starter with Jameis Winston as the primary backup.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes took too much abuse in 2024    Fri May 16, 12:25 AM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes absorbed a league-high 70 hits during the 2024 regular season, according to Pro Football Reference.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs need to do a much better job of protecting the superstar quarterback. Mahomes said he wants to â€"try to get back to some of the explosive passing plays that we've done in years past.” In order to do that, Mahomes needs time to throw on those downfield plays. They did select Ohio State OT Josh Simmons at the end of the first round, and he could be part of the solution the Chiefs need up front.

Bears | Caleb Williams initially unenthused about Chicago    Thu May 15, 01:44 PM

Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams - and specifically his father, Carl - went to 'great lengths' to circumvent the 2024 NFL Draft for several reasons, including their initial impression of the team and its history with quarterbacks, according to details in a forthcoming book from ESPN's Seth Wickersham. The father and son even considered attacking the organization and the city of Chicago in hopes they could make the situation untenable for the franchise, much like Jack and John Elway did with the Baltimore Colts in 1983. Ultimately, Caleb Williams' decision to potentially 'nuke the city' fell by the wayside following a predraft visit, after which he believed he could be part of a process to turn the franchise around.

Footballguys view: The Bears let Williams down last year, and that's why the coaching staff was changed. Coming over from the high-powered Lions, new head coach Ben Johnson should be able to craft a dynamic scheme around Williams and what he does best. Chicago had a Pope named before they had a 4,000 yard passer. Perhaps this year, Williams can be the first to surpass that mark.

Seahawks | Jalen Milroe signs contract    Wed May 14, 01:17 PM

Seattle Seahawks third-round draft choice QB Jalen Milroe signed a four-year contract with the Seahawks Tuesday, May 14, worth $6.264 million.

Footballguys view: While Milroe fell into the late third round, Footballguy Sigmund Bloom pointed out that the rookie still landed on a team that could give him a chance to start in 2026. Sam Darnold's deal is basically year-to-year after 2025, and if you think Darnold bombs outside of Minnesota, then Milroe's immense fantasy upside could be unlocked. Bloom added: "Milroe is still a viable late first-round pick in superflex leagues and has as much upside as anyone going outside of the first in 1QB leagues."

NFL | Could Derek Carr unretire in 2026?    Wed May 14, 09:00 AM

Retired QB Derek Carr (Saints) is 'extremely unlikely' to unretire in 2026, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, who cited 'sources with knowledge of the situation.' Carr is already making other professional plans, though it's entirely possible he could change his mind once fully healthy.

Footballguys view: While Carr eventually will land on the Saints' reserve/retired list, an unretirement in 2026 would likely trigger an immediate release of his rights, given that his 2025 salary of $30 million would immediately hit the cap. At most, the Saints would finagle a late-round pick from a team interested in signing him. And if he eventually has a change of heart, Given that the shelf life for quarterbacks has extended deep into the 30s and, for some, beyond their 40th birthdays, the 34-year-old Carr could still play if/when his shoulder is healed. So, even if it's unlikely for now, we may revisit this story down the road.

Vikings | Minnesota high on Max Brosmer    Wed May 14, 01:19 AM

Minnesota Vikings QB Max Brosmer, who was signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Minnesota, could be viewed in a 'long-term role as a backup,' in the opinion of ESPN's Kevin Seifert, who notes the team gave him $246,000 in guaranteed money. Seifert also adds that Brosmer's 'initial impression' during the team's rookie minicamp 'merit a close eye' in the months ahead as he competes with QBs Sam Howell and Brett Rypien behind new starting QB J.J. McCarthy.

Eagles | Kyle McCord may have edge for No. 3 QB job    Mon May 12, 10:02 AM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Kyle McCord will compete with QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson for the No. 3 quarterback job but likely will have an edge over Thompson-Robinson since he was selected in the 2025 NFL Draft, in the opinion of NBC Sports Philadelphia's Dave Zangaro.

Footballguys view: While the sixth-round pick used to select Kyle McCord out of Syracuse doesn't guarantee that spot, it should give him the upper hand. The Eagles got Thompson-Robinson back in a trade with the Browns earlier this offseason and thought he'd be a good player to bring in to develop. But Zangaro believes Thompson-Robinson might be on the outside of the position group. The top two -- Jalen Hurts and Tanner McKee -- are locked into their spots as starter and backup going into the 2025 season. This is a bump for McKee, who was the No. 3 last year behind Hurts and Kenny Pickett, who was traded to Cleveland.

Browns | Dillon Gabriel fine with Shedeur Sanders pick    Sun May 11, 03:10 PM

Cleveland Browns QB Dillon Gabriel said he loves that the Browns selected QB Shedeur Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft because they can learn from each other.

Footballguys view: What else is he supposed to say? The Browns have an unsettled quarterback situation, with Gabriel, Sanders, Joe Flacco, and Kenny Pickett all set to establish a pecking order. The Sanders pick was much later than expected, and he may not get much of a chance to impress when all four quarterbacks are at minicamp later this spring. One or both of the rookies may be bound for third-string duties or a practice squad spot.

Raiders | Cam Miller signs rookie deal    Sun May 11, 07:27 AM

Las Vegas Raiders sixth-round draft choice QB Cam Miller signed a four-year contract with the Raiders Thursday, May 8. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Cam Miller is a player with a ton of moxie to his game. Like most South Dakota State quarterbacks, Miller has experience running a pro scheme and is known as a leader on the field. He's a mobile pocket passer who has a bit of Sam Howell (Vikings) to his game. Miller can read the defense quickly, and he can efficiently work the ball on short-to-intermediate routes. He doesn't have a big arm, and NFL EDGE rushers could feast on his if he's slow to react to the rush. We'll monitor Miller in crazy deep dynasty formats.

Saints | Three-way battle for New Orleans' QB1 gig    Sat May 10, 02:55 PM

New Orleans Saints QBs Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener will compete for the starting quarterback job, head coach Kellen Moore said Saturday, May 10, following the retirement of QB Derek Carr.

Footballguys view: "We're going to let all three of these guys roll," Moore told reporters on Saturday, "and they've all earned these opportunities. We'll let Jake, Spencer, and Tyler -- all three kind of go through this process." Moore expressed confidence that, once the preseason starts, "one of these guys will rise" to the starting job. Moore said Shough did an "excellent" job in his first taste of the NFL, which consisted of a pair of seven-on-seven sessions that were "somewhat competitive" in the team's rookie minicamp. Shough and the other rookies will join the veterans in the ongoing offseason program on Monday. Asked about the possibility of adding a veteran quarterback, Moore said they'll have an "awareness" of it and be ready to add another quarterback if the opportunity presents itself. Meanwhile, Shough remains our favorite to win the job. He's QB31 on the Footballguys 2025 Projections.

Saints | Derek Carr retires    Sat May 10, 10:54 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr officially announced his retirement from the NFL Saturday, May 10, according to a press release from the team.

Footballguys view: Carr's retirement leaves the Saints with three quarterbacks, who have a combined record of 0-7 as NFL starters, on their roster. The holdovers from last year are 2024 fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler and 2023 fourth-round pick Jake Haener. When Carr missed time with injuries last season, Rattler started six games, and Haener started one. The Saints went 0-7 in those games, with Rattler and Haener averaging 5.8 yards per pass. The newcomer is second-round rookie Tyler Shough, who is 25 years old after a long college career that saw him spend three years at Oregon, three years at Texas Tech, and one year at Louisville. As Profootballtalk.com suggests, the Saints knew Carr had a significant injury to his throwing shoulder when they drafted Shough with the 40th pick overall, which indicates that they see Shough as Carr's heir apparent. We see it the same. At No. 31, Shough is the top Saints QB on the Footballguys 2025 Projections.

Steelers | Will Howard signs contract    Fri May 9, 03:20 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers sixth-round draft choice QB Will Howard signed a four-year contract with the Steelers Friday, May 9. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Howard is a scrappy quarterback who can make pocket throws when well protected. When things go off script, Howard needs to manage his game better. The Steelers have yet to sign Aaron Rodgers to be their starter, and Howard is just a developmental guy in 2025 (and perhaps 2026) anyway.

Indianapolis Colts third-round pick CB Justin Walley, fourth-round pick OT Jalen Travis, fifth-round pick RB DJ Giddens, sixth-round pick QB Riley Leonard, sixth-round pick DT Tim Smith and seventh-round pick S Hunter Wohler.

Footballguys view: We like the upside of Giddens in deep dynasty formats. He's a slashing runner who doesn't waste a ton of motion with the ball in his hands. Giddens needs to prove himself better as a pass catcher (too many drops), and perhaps add some more muscle to his frame. He will compete for a reserve spot behind Jonathan Taylor and Khalil Herbert.

Steelers | Aaron Rodgers still in play for Pittsburgh    Thu May 8, 01:12 AM

Free-agent QB Aaron Rodgers (Jets) has been in communication with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the offseason and, according to ESPN's Brooke Pryor, it is 'unlikely that Rodgers wasn't privy' to the team's decision to trade WR George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys.

Footballguys view: It's a bit odd if a player not signed was involved or aware ahead of time when it comes to a receiver. The Steelers remain in contact with Rodgers and hope he signs with the team. Until that happens, the Steelers will trot out Mason Rudolph as their top quarterback in offseason workouts.

Saints | Derek Carr injury update    Wed May 7, 12:54 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr (shoulder) reportedly wants to try to play through the shoulder injury he believes he suffered in Week 14 of last season, according to NFL Network's Jane Slater. Per Slater, Carr has met with the team doctor twice in recent weeks and did not know the shoulder was hurt before because he only resumed throwing a football a few weeks ago as he began to ramp up for offseason work.

Footballguys view: There is no timeline for a decision, but Slater reported one is expected "sooner rather than later." For those just getting up to speed on this, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported last month that Carr's shoulder ailment (on his throwing arm) could put his 2025 campaign at risk. The 34-year-old is reportedly reluctant to undergo surgery after previously having a procedure on the same arm. With Carr's status for 2025 in limbo, the Saints' QB room is currently stocked with 2023 fourth-rounder Jake Haener and 2024 fifth-rounder Spencer Rattler, who each started in Carr's place last season, along with rookie second-rounder Tyler Shough. Stay tuned. We'll be watching this one closely.

Raiders | Las Vegas has high hopes for Tommy Mellott    Mon May 5, 03:58 PM

Las Vegas Raiders sixth-round draft choice QB/WR Tommy Mellott is a 'unique guy' who the team views as an 'athlete/receiver,' according to college scouting director Brandon Yeargan.'We view him as a receiver that's going to have a lot of value in the kicking game, potentially as a returner, as a cover player, maybe play some quarterback, too. We're looking (at him) really as an athlete/receiver, but he's a unique guy,' Yeargan said.

Footballguys view: As Review-Journal staffer Vincent Bonsignore noted, Mellott caught the attention of several NFL scouts and coaches with an electrifying pro day at Montana State on April 4. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds, posted a 41-inch vertical jump, and recorded a 10-foot, 4-inch broad jump. He threw passes as a quarterback and then caught them as a receiver. Bonsignore reports the Raiders have a broader vision for Mellott, much like the Patriots did with Julian Edelman when they selected him in the seventh round of the 2009 draft. The former Kent State quarterback became an excellent receiver and the MVP of Super Bowl 53. However, Mellot has much to prove before he's viewed as a potential fantasy asset.

Rams | Matthew Stafford contract details    Mon May 5, 02:11 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford signed a renegotiated contract that will allow him to earn $44 million in 2025, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. If Stafford is on the roster at the start of free agency in 2026, he will make another $40 million guaranteed.

Footballguys view: Considering that they don't have an heir apparent on the roster, Stafford seems likely to get every opportunity to earn that money. At this point, there's no reason to believe he can't play at a level similar to what we've seen in the last two years. He's 19-12 as a starter over that span, completing 64.2 percent of his passes for 7,727 yards with 44 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. Stafford gives the Rams a great shot at post-season play, and, as we've noted in the past, fantasy managers with stakes in Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, and Kyren Williams have a better chance of getting the most out of their investments.

Seattle Seahawks QB Jalen Milroe has been working with private quarterback coach Jordan Palmer for a year and a half.

Footballguys view: Palmer has worked with guys like Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen, so Milroe is putting in the work to be better as a passer. Milroe is an incredible runner, and he throws a great deep ball. Now, Milroe needs Palmer's help to become a better short-to-intermediate thrower. Milroe gets time to develop on the Seahawks roster behind Sam Darnold and Drew Lock.

Rams | Coach hopes Matthew Stafford extends career    Sat May 3, 11:26 AM

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford is expected to go year-to-year with his decision to continue playing, but head coach Sean McVay said he hopes Stafford plays for several more seasons.

Footballguys view: The Rams don't have an heir apparent on the roster. But they do have two first-round picks for 2026, having acquired the Falcons' top selection for next year. That gives them ammunition to trade up for a quarterback in 2026 if they so desire. Still, McVay's hope is understandable. Stafford has kept the Rams contenders. He is 19-12 as a starter the past two seasons, completing 64.2 percent of his passes for 7,727 yards with 44 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. "We have a chance with him every time he's at the switch, and love working with him," McVay told Adam Schein on SiriusXM's Mad Dog Sports Radio. In addition, fantasy managers with stakes in Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, and Kyren Williams have a better chance of getting the most out of their investments.

New Orleans Saints QB Tyler Shough seems to be the leading candidate to be the starting quarterback in 2025 if QB Derek Carr (shoulder) is not able to play, in the opinion of SaintsWire's Luke Loffredo.

Footballguys view: The Saints are still waiting for further clarity on the shoulder injury that Carr is dealing with, and word on that will help shape the timeline for when they might think about seeing if Shough's extended time in college pays off in the pros. But as things stand now, the Footballguys stance, as stated by staffer Jason Wood, views Shough as the most likely quarterback other than Tennesse's Cam Ward to start more than 50 percent of his team's games this year.
