See quarterbacks to monitor on veteran contracts
Contracts can be a good source of dynasty information, including for injury and performance security. Below are the seven key quarterback contracts to watch in the next year and their dynasty implications.
Arizona exercised Kyler Murray’s fifth-year option picked up and Murray is under contract through 2023. However, the relationship is acrimonious with news Murray will not play until he receives another contract. These situations typically get worked out but warrant monitoring. The offense is disjointed as DeAndre Hopkins is suspended and Christian Kirk departed in free agency but added Marquise Brown. Murray took a jump from 7.1 yards per attempt in 2020 to 7.9 in 2021. At his first-round startup pick cost in Superflex dynasty leagues, Murray is an avoid at present.
Like Kyler Murray, Lamar Jackson is nearing the end of his rookie deal. Jackson has a better resume than Murray, including an MVP award, and more yards per attempt in all but 2021. Jackson is on his fifth-year option in 2022, and Baltimore would certainly play out his franchise tag in 2023 and 2024 if no long-term deal is secured. Jackson has not started a full season in the NFL, but the injury concerns may be overstated. Jackson was held out for a game at the end of the season in 2019, before missing a game with COVID-19 in 2020. Jackson’s 2021 season was the one season as a starter where Jackson missed time with injury. If Jackson plays on a year-to-year deal, he will run the risk of injuries that hinder his market value.
Jalen Hurts is in the third year of his career, with Philadelphia exploiting his rookie contract. Philadelphia used their first-round draft pick to add A.J. Brown and acquired an additional 2023 first-round pick in a trade down. Brown pairs with Devonta Smith and Dallas Goedert to make a highly efficient set of offensive weapons. Hurts is a high variance QB2 in dynasty, with a ceiling to be a league winner, but questions about his longevity. Insuring against his longevity concerns with the likes of Kirk Cousins or Derek Carr is a good blend of upside and security.
