If you fall out of contention this season, use it as an opportunity to optimize your roster for the offseason. The types of players you can add off the free agent wire at this point of the season are low-probability bets, but you can improve your odds.
Low Hanging Fruit
If you looking to open roster spots, and play in leagues with the positions, cut your kicker and defense. These positions are not predictable difference makers year over year, and outside of an exceptional circumstance, you are better off using the roster spot to roster a skill position player.
You should also take a good look at the running backs and wide receivers on your roster and be critical about their place in the NFL. Outside of rookie or second year players, if the running back or wide receiver has not be productive, they are generally unlikely to be difference-makers. You should be critical about rostering these players into the offseason.
Additionally, in non-premium positions, you should avoid any backup or low-level streaming options that you have at the quarterback and tight end position.
Focus On Premium Positions
If you are playing in quarterback or tight end premium leagues, target these types of players as stash candidates. Geno Smith, P.J. Walker, Jacoby Brissett, and Andy Dalton all had prior success in the NFL and were available on the waiver wire near the close of the 2021 season. Stashing them over the offseason would have increased your depth in the 2022 season.
If you are playing in a league with premiums at the quarterback position, some options to consider include:
- P.J. Walker, CAR
- Jacoby Brissett, CLE
- Cooper Rush, DAL
- Jordan Love, GB
- Teddy Bridgewater, NO
- Sam Howell, WAS
Similarly, Hayden Hurst and Will Dissly are tight ends with prior success that could be available on the waiver wire in 2021 that have become lineup options in 2022. Jonnu Smith is a player of that type to stash in 2022.
Additionally, young players with developmental profiles worth a stash include:
- Charlie Kolar, BAL
- Jake Ferguson, DAL
- James Mitchell, DET
- Donald Parham, DAL
- Hunter Long, MIA
- Jeremy Ruckert, NYJ
- Armani Rogers, WAS
