2018 Rookies
Calvin Ridley and D.J. Moore, the two first-round wide receivers from the 2018 rookie class, have had their fifth-year options picked up. Both will be under contract through 2022 and could be on the extension watch in the next year. Moore’s teammate Robby Anderson is also on extension watch in the final year of his contract.
Courtland Sutton and D.J. Chark are both on extension watch as well, but with checkered injury pasts, the Broncos and Jaguars could opt to play out their contracts or use the franchise tag in 2022. Christian Kirk and James Washington, the other second-round picks from the 2022 class, have been disappointments and will likely find themselves on the free-agent market in prove-it type contract capacity in 2022. Third-round pick TreQuan Smith has similarly disappointed after receiving positive buzz earlier in his career. Michael Gallup could be the most intriguing player to watch. He had strong production in his second year before ending up buried behind Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb for the final two seasons of his rookie deal.
Other Situations
Buffalo could cut Cole Beasley and save 6.1 million on the salary cap in 2022, while Emmanuel Sanders is a free agent. Gabriel Davis' role is one to watch. Still, history indicates Buffalo is more likely to address position through the free agent or trade market than depend on developmental options to surround Josh Allen in key wide receiver roles.
Jamison Crowder took a pay cut to stay with the Jets in 2021. He will be a free agent in 2022, along with Keelan Cole. Denzel Mims is an important watch this season, particularly with the additions of Corey Davis in free agency and Elijah Moore in the draft.
