Random Shots From Week 5

Joe Bryant's Random Shots From Week 5 Joe Bryant Published 10/12/2022

Hi Folks,

We do a ton of insightful, thoughtful, and serious features here at Footballguys, with smart people thinking deeply for you.

This is not one of those features.

This is Random Shots, and it's a few pages of me downloading my brain that gets stuffed with way too many random items from too many hours watching, reading about, and listening to Football every weekend and throughout the week. It's the only way I manage. Here's hoping it has some value for you.

We'll see. Now let's get to it.

J

More October talk and Michael Myers with a behind-the-scenes look at what makes him great.

"Pennywise talking like, 'Oh, I'm big time.'"

"You livin' in a sewer.

"My condo 4,800 a month. You're not moving like me."

Time is a flat circle.

Coach Mike McDaniel this week on Tyreek HIll's leadership.

Then this from 2020.

Thanks to Adam Harstad for that one.

Listen to Anthony. And Coach Smith...

Shout out to all the Dads out there. We can multitask.

Retired quarterback Mark Sanchez calling the Packers game and talking about how he grew up watching Marcedes Lewis was something...

The game started so much better for Davante Adams than it ended.

Playoff Baseball is here!

Now that's a lead.

Music Note Of The Week.

If "The Office" show was set in Tennessee...

I love that folksy stuff has become cool again.

"Wait so long" by Trampled by Turtles is so good. Sometimes the instruments match the song perfectly. The violin, mandolin, and banjo are haunting as they whip, and you can feel the desperation, yearning, and urgency when he races through the lyrics.

It's effectively an Americana punk song.

It's a coffee-stained earth ever time it happensLiven up, honey. It ain't that badAny afterthought rose to recognitionLike every other coffin that I had
And your Buick broke down in WinnemuccaFall to your knees, and you pray to the lordThen you take up hope at the politiciansNothing happens in this burnt-out town anymore
You wait so longYou wait so longYou wait so longYou wait so long

The Internet had fun with the Bears misspelling David Montgomery's name on his jersey.

I'll be honest; as someone who's misspelled a lot of names over the years, I tend to have grace on this one.

A strong moment in Washington Sunday when running back Brian Robinson Jr came out of the tunnel to fellow gunshot survivor 50 Cent's "Many Men."

To the surprise of no one, Draymond Green won't be suspended for punching Jordan Poole in the face.

Coach Steve Kerr could have spared us the eye-rolling talk of "the crisis" and just cut to the truth, "Draymond Green won't be suspended because he's really good."

Gabe Davis and Josh Allen, you're ridiculous.

By the middle of the second quarter, Davis had two touchdowns and was averaging 80 yards per reception.

Freeze the frame for a second. This is just incredible.

Justin Jefferson's T-Shirt Game = STRONG.

Leonard Fournette with a fun celebration.

Nothing like a good coach feud. Especially when it's the young guys vs. the old guys angle.

Back in July, South Carolina's social media posted this video with coach Shane Beamer.

Before the season started, Kentucky coach Mark Stoops mocked Beamer when he told the SEC Network, “It’s easy to change a climate. You know, you just change a uniform, talk a little game, dance around, put on some stupid sunglasses and you can change a climate, but to change a culture, it’s at the core.”

He said he had done things the right way at Kentucky, and they'd made a fundamental culture change. And not just a superficial climate change.

Beamer did not forget.

Here's their "Climate Check."

A team that chokes as much as the Chargers is hard to hate.

But they're giving it a good shot.

I don't have any affinity toward Ohio. And I know it's a TikTok thing. But this just seems weird.

Especially when your coach is from there and played for the University of Dayton.

Frame it.

And the video.

Tristan Wirfs was fun talking about Tom Brady.

And the Internet did Internet things.

Dameon Pierce runs like a guy with something to prove.

Justin Tucker is as good...

as he is annoying.

The NFL has released official instructions on how a quarterback can be sacked now.

Aaron Rodgers look-a-likes in London.

This was just mean...

Kyler Murray's not doing much to answer the "Does he prepare enough?" concerns...

Keys To Winning:

1. Protect The Football.

2. Don't Give Up The Big Play.

3. Control The Line Of Scrimmage.

And if you're the Bills: Average 10+ yards per offensive snap.

Not going to lie; I wondered about this too.

I've been assured the gold jacket in Canton is on the way for Stafford, so I'm sure this must not mean anything. But...

I love the moxie and fight. But this might stay ugly.

Taysom Hill is the TE4 on the season, and he has one reception.

Our game can be a cruel game.

Thanks to Ryan McDowell for that one.

Note to Kyler Murray. Hillary Clinton called and wants her suit back.

We're living in a magical time for cameras.

Pretty much this.

Thanks to Claudio Berumen for that one.

A. It's not only about points scored.

B. Yes, I know they won the Super Bowl last year.

C. It's kind of about points scored.

I can't pass up a Wrestling / NFL reference.

Justin has a plan.

Thanks to Roland Dal for that one.

More college coach smack talk. Alabama State and coach Eddie Robinson Jr. chose Jackson State as their homecoming opponent. Understandably, Jackson State coach Deion Sanders used the homecoming invite/insult to fire up his team during the week.

Jackson State won, and Eddie Robinson Jr. did this after the game.

Asked about it later, Robinson whined about Sanders not shaking his hand before the game. And repeatedly stressed Sanders didn't belong in the historically proud Southwestern Athletic Conference, or the SWAC as it's known. Robinson said of Sanders, "He ain’t SWAC.”

You can guess how it went for Sanders and Jackson State Monday morning...

Times have changed. If a player hit Brady like he did in that old clip, he'd probably get the Death Penalty from Goodell.

Wrapping with this one.

Washington coach Ron Rivera gave a textbook example of how to throw your player under the bus.

He was asked why the other NFC East teams were further ahead right now. He didn't hesitate and said, "Quarterback."

This is remarkable on several levels.

One is that a veteran coach like Rivera would go public with something like this.

But more importantly, how could he even think such a thing? Jalen Hurts has been excellent, but apparently, in news to Rivera, the other quarterbacks in the division are Cooper Rush and Daniel Jones. Those guys are why you're behind?

Interestingly, Justin Pugh, a player, showed us the opposite approach. Pugh is a guard for the Cardinals, who lost their game Sunday after a series of bad plays ending with kicker Matt Ammendola missing a field goal at the end. Reporters were crowded around Ammendola's locker, and Pugh stepped in, “It’s not one f*cking guy. I missed a block, we missed touchdowns, we had the ball and should’ve been able to score. It’s not one f*cking guy. Everyone’s waiting around for one guy to come back here and it f*cking ain’t right … It’s not right.”

The audio is NSFW, but it's a picture of a leader.

Like most things in life, it comes back to The Godfather. Keep that kind of talk in-house.

Thanks to Footballguys Keith Overton, Sigmund Bloom, Jake Bryant, Tom Wiklund, Adam Harstad, Ryan McDowell, Claudio Berumen, Roland Dal, Adam Harstad, and Clayton Gray for help. If you've got a Random Shot of your own, email me at bryant@footballguys.com.

Thanks for playing along, and I hope you make the most of whatever you're doing in your life. Love your neighbor and stick together.

Peace and Grace to you.
