Random Shots From Week 2

Joe Bryant's Random Shots From Week 2 Joe Bryant Published 09/21/2022

Hi Folks,

We do a ton of insightful, thoughtful, and serious features here at Footballguys with smart people thinking deeply for you.

This is not one of those features.

This is Random Shots, and it's a few pages of me downloading my brain that gets stuffed with way too many random items from too many hours watching, reading about, and listening to football every weekend and throughout the week. It's the only way I manage. Here's hoping it has some value for you.

We'll see. Now let's get to it.

J

Opening with a banger.

If a fantasy football season were 9 seconds like this video, we're about one second in. So far, feels accurate.

Make sure to have the sound on.

Every Charger and Justin Herbert Fan Sunday...

Narrator voice: "They did not".

The Thursday Night Game is now exclusively available on Amazon Prime.

This was a significant segment of the NFL fanbase audience Thursday night...

It's about a lot more than Football.

Thanks to Jonathan Morris for that one.

Not going to lie. A right-handed Tua Tagovailoa is interesting.

Probably exposing some of my own bias here...

ESPN/ABC gave us a Monday Night Football doubleheader. Titans-Bills began at 7:15 p.m. ET and Vikings-Eagles started at 8:30 p.m. ET.

ESPN used a split screen to show both games at times and Twitter did what Twitter does:

"Dear @espn - this split screen is so disrespectful to the fans that are watching the current game."

and

"Why the f**k does the #NFL and #espn need to show score bug if other game at same time?

"If they want to remind people game is on, remove the score. We want to record and watch both games. It’s 2022."

and

"#espn I will say watching the Buffalo Bills game was the WORST experience ever.

"If I wanted to watch the Vikings vs Eagles I would have watched it.

"The cutting and split screen was such a bad idea."

I get it that people want to see their team. But if watching the Titans and Bills in high definiion on a Monday night is the "WORST experience ever" you might want to reevaluate your life.

I'm going to drop this right here.

This seemed better last week.

Probably a little too close to the truth.

My friend Linda with a great answer for when someone asks why your fantasy team is struggling.

As usual, Roy Kent knows.

Eli Manning with a fake nose and wig posing as Penn State walk-on "Chad Powers" is too good.

Here's the full version:

Me Sunday morning:

Narrator Voice Sunday afternoon: "He was not the WR8".

The music note this week is Robert Finley, a 68-year-old Blue musician from Louisiana. He was deemed legally blind in 2015 but that doesn't keep him from making great music.

From The Athletic, here’s the complete list of current NFL quarterbacks with more interceptions than games started (minimum 10 starts):
Jameis Winston — 94 interceptions in 79 starts
Chad Henne — 63 interceptions in 54 starts
Sam Darnold — 52 interceptions in 49 starts
Geno Smith — 38 interceptions in 36 starts
Nick Mullens — 22 interceptions in 17 starts
Josh Rosen — 21 interceptions in 16 starts
Taylor Heinicke — 18 interceptions in 16 starts
C.J. Beathard — 13 interceptions in 12 starts
Mason Rudolph — 11 interceptions in 10 starts

Not Great, Bob.

When a player can do this:

It helps them do this:

Roger Goodell sitting next to Jeff Bezos Thursday night was what we refer to as a "Target Rich Environment".

and

and plenty of

I love it when the internet goes wild if a 240-pound running back flattens a 198-pound cornerback.

Here's the opposite.

Derwin James is 6' 2" and 216 pounds.

Travis Kelce is 6' 5" and 260 pounds.

Frame it.

Rock on Brian Robinson Jr. So pulling for this guy.

We can't say Patrick Mahomes II didn't try to tell us:

From Arrowheadpride.com on September 7th:

“I think there’s going to be like a different player every single game that has the big game,” claimed Mahomes. “It’s not going to be just necessarily Tyreek and Travis every single week, where it’s like one of the other is having a big game — or both. It’s going to be every single week, it’s going to be someone different.”

And then Mahomes smiled.

“So I’m sorry to all you fantasy football guys, because they’re going to come from everywhere. So you’re going to have to choose the right guy every week.”

This past week, Mahomes threw to 9 different receivers for the second consecutive game.

Appalachian State beat Texas A&M two weeks ago in College Station and was paid $1.5 Million to be there.

The signs for ESPN's College Gameday the next Saturday in Boone were fantastic. The school gave away a year of free tuition for the best efforts.

But the game was even better as Appalachian State won on the last play:

Here's App State quarterback Chase Brice helping fans out of the stands onto the field.

Every league has this guy...

Rowdy in the Rose Bowl. This was a real game.

At least there was one bit of good news from Cleveland.

Brownie the Elf is glorious.

Some truth here.

They say setting clear expectations is the key to good communication. Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees seemed pretty clear with his quarterback here.

Rashod Bateman is a problem.

A replay of the Mike Evans - Marshon Lattimore fight.

Lord Have Mercy.

Kyler Murray is ridiculous.

Remember back when the Bengals made all those waves addressing and fixing their offensive line?

Joe Burrow is on pace to be sacked 111 times this season.

To his credit, Arthur Smith is upfront about it.

At least Leonard Fournette loves us.

My friend Frank Schwab wrote on Yahoo:

According to Next Gen Stats, the Miami Dolphins, New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals all had less than a 2-percent chance to win at some point during their games on Sunday. All three won. There had been only 17 games over the last seven seasons in which teams that reached 98-percent win probability lost, according to Next Gen Stats, and then it happened three times on Sunday alone.

I know it's sacrilege to question the holiness of the Next Gen gospel, but I'm starting to wonder here.

Geno Smith had a fun line after the upset win in Week 1.

I understand intellectual property and know things today are all about the dollar. But the lines seem less fun when they're followed by the lawyers immediately filing for the trademark.

Green Bay had fun roasting Rodgers and his psychedelic tea.

He's back.

Thanks to Jordan McNamara for that one.

More Kyler Murray.

Dan Skipper was cut this summer from the Lions and resigned to the practice squad. He got his chance to play Sunday filling in at guard, a position he hadn't played much since college.

I love Dan Campbell shouting him out after the game.

The unsung heroes are my favorite part of the game. The rock star cool kids like Aidan Hutchison will get the attention and the commercials. That's fine. They're great players. But I love the grinders like Skipper. And I love Campbell giving him the attention he deserved.

For the post-game press conference, Campbell sent Skipper out as the first player to the podium.

I don't know how many more games these Lions will win. But I'm pulling for them.

Mike Gesecki's Griddy celebration was something else.

Thanks to Adam Harstad for that one.

Closing with this one.

Marv Levy at 97 years young with his trademark, "Where else would you rather be than right here, right now?"

So good.

Whether it's football or something else, my hope and prayer for you is that you find a place where you want to be.

Thanks to Footballguys Keith Overton, Jonathan Morris, Jordan McNamara, Adam Harstad, and Clayton Gray for the help on this one. If you've got a Random Shot of your own, send me an email at bryant@footballguys.com.

Thanks for playing along, and I hope you make the most of whatever you're doing in your life. Love your neighbor and stick together.

Peace and Grace to you.
