Gameday Injury Expectations: Week 9

Jene Bramel's Gameday Injury Expectations: Week 9 Jene Bramel Published 11/05/2022

UNDERSTANDING THE NFL'S INJURY REPORT

The injury report released by the NFL is two reports. The first is the Practice Participation report, which lists which injured players were able to practice and how much. It also includes players who rested or missed practice for non-injury-related reasons. The second is the Game Status Report, which gives the probability a player will play, i.e., Questionable, Doubtful, Out. The Practice Participation Report is released every day of the week (Monday through Saturday). The Game Status Report is released with the Friday participation report (Wednesday for Thursday games, Saturday for Monday games).

In this feature, I'll include the Game Status Listing, my expectation of their likelihood to play, and the player's practice participation throughout the week.

Playing Sunday at 1:00 pm Eastern

DAndre Swift | Shoulder / ankle | Questionable | Likely to play

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Swift returned to play in Week 7 and had ten touches on 33 plays -- 55% of Detroit's offensive snaps. Dan Campbell said the limited snap count was planned and Swift felt good after the game. There was some concern after Swift's missed Wednesday practice but he returned to drills on Thursday and Friday.

On Friday, Campbell said Swift would play but it's unclear whether he'll continue with a strict snap count. Campbell said, "We’re going to let him go, but the plan is to get him in the game and see where he’s at.”

Expect 10-15 touches with a chance at 15+ touches if Swift is ready for 40+ snaps. Unfortunately, there's also downside if Swift isn't feeling comfortable.

Sunday update: Both Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport tweeted the Lions will continue to limit Swift's snaps. It's unlikely Swift will see more than 30 snaps and 10-12 touches.

Darren Waller | Hamstring | Questionable | Likely inactive

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Waller hasn't played since a Week 5 hamstring strain. A full week of limited practice likely has him closer to returning than last week but he's still considered a game-time decision.

Josh McDaniels told reporters Waller was "working extremely hard to try to get back as soon as he can" but would not commit to his status on Sunday. None of the Las Vegas beat writers have a clear take on Waller's chances of playing.

It's unlikely Waller will be full strength if active but high-leverage targets could preserve some of his baseline fantasy value. Watch for information through the weekend.

Sunday update: Adam Schefter reports Waller is "not fully healthy and is unlikely to play."

Cordarrelle Patterson | Knee | Designated to return | Saturday decision

The Falcons returned Patterson to practice this week. Arthur Smith said the team wouldn't decide Patterson's status until Saturday's deadline for roster moves.

Patterson spoke with the media and said a lot of factors would determine his status but the general tone in the Atlanta locker room was positive during the week. If active, it's unlikely Patterson will see a 15+ touch workload.

Saturday update: Patterson was added to the active roster and will return.

Allen Lazard | Shoulder | Questionable | Likely to play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Lazard was able to practice this week but the Packers plan to give him until Sunday morning to continue recovering. Green Bay trends conservative with injured players but Lazard may still be cleared to play.

If Lazard travels to Chicago on Saturday, his chances of playing rise significantly.

Sunday update: The Packers made no roster moves on Saturday and didn't rule Lazard out. He's traveled with the team to Chicago and trending toward playing.

James Robinson | Knee | Questionable | Sunday decision

Robinson was added to the injury report on Saturday morning with a knee condition. He reportedly struggled with soreness before the Jets traded for him. There are no indications he's in jeopardy of missing the game but watch for more details through Sunday inactives.

Sunday update: Ian Rapoport tweeted the Jets plan to work Robinson out before the game but expect him to be available.

Damien Harris | Illness | Questionable | Sunday decision

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Harris is listed as a limited participant on all three New England practice reports but no media member saw Harris on the field this week. The questionable designation means little for Patriots' players. Beat writer speculation is often limited but valuable.

This week, local media are using terms like "not ideal" to describe Harris' status. While there's time for Harris to recover and play, he's likely more doubtful than questionable and may only be available in a smaller supporting role.

Sunday update: Adam Schefter tweeted Harris is "unlikely to play."

DeAndre Carter | Illness | Questionable | Sunday decision

Practice Participation: Wed - Not listed | Thurs - Not listed | Fri - Limited

Already without Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, the Chargers are now unsure whether Carter will play after he missed practice on Friday.

Brandon Staley said Carter "didn't feel right" and the team wouldn't know much until Saturday. Watch for additional updates through the weekend.

Sunday update: Local reporters expect Carter to play.

Christian Watson | Concussion | Questionable | Sunday decision

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Watson made progress in the concussion protocol late in the week but had yet to be cleared by an independent neurologist. The Packers travel to Chicago on Saturday. If Watson is with the team, he'll be active and play.

Playing Sunday at 4:05 pm Eastern

James Conner | Ribs | Questionable | Sunday decision

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Conner has missed three games with a rib cartilage injury and is still questionable to play. The Cardinals did not comment on Conner's status. He is considered a game-time decision.

Conner may be ready to return to his pre-injury role as Arizona's primary ball carrier if active.

Sunday update: Jeremy Fowler reports the Cardinals are "hopeful" Conner will play. Adam Schefter describes Conner as "likely to play."

Playing Sunday at 4:25 pm Eastern

Cooper Kupp | Ankle | Not listed | Expected to play

Practice Participation: Wed - DNP | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Full

Kupp will play after a frightening ankle injury that initially looked concerning enough to cause a multiple-week absence. The missed Wednesday practice was precautionary and Sean McVay confirmed Kupp would play after a full Friday practice. Expect him to see his usual workload.

Van Jefferson | Knee | Questionable | Expected to play

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited

Jefferson played 33 snaps last week but was not targeted. Sean McVay told reporters Jefferson would return to action this weekend despite the team listing him questionable.

Playing Sunday at 8:20 pm Eastern

Ryan Tannehill | Ankle | Questionable | Sunday decision

Practice Participation: Wed - Limited | Thurs - DNP | Fri - Limited

Tannehill is questionable again this week after missing Week 8 with an ankle injury. Mike Vrabel refused to declare Tennessee's intentions at quarterback during a Friday press conference, saying only that the team needed more time to make a decision. The Thursday DNP is concerning. Malik Willis would start again if Tannehill is unable to go.

Sunday update: Ian Rapoport reports Tannehill is "doing everything he can to play" and will "take it up to game time." The tone of these reports continues to be hopeful at best and it's likely Willis starts Sunday night.

Playing Monday at 8:15 PM Eastern

Mark Andrews | Knee / Shoulder | Doubtful | LIkely inactive

Practice Participation: Thurs - DNP | Fri - DNP | Sat - DNP

Andrews was unable to practice this week after suffering a shoulder sprain last Thursday night. Andrews was cleared to play in Week 7 after managing only a limited Friday practice and could play this week without practicing. But the extra three days of treatment does not appear to have improved his chances much. The Ravens' Week 10 bye would give Andrews additional time to fully recover.

It's possible the national media will provide a helpful update overnight but consider Andrews doubtful for your weekend decision-making. Make sure you have a productive hedge on your roster if you choose to wait until Monday to remove Andrews from your lineup.

Sunday update: The Ravens listed Andrews doubtful and will be inactive.

Gus Edwards | Hamstring | Doubtful | LIkely inactive

Practice Participation: Thurs - DNP | Fri - DNP | Sat - DNP

Edwards has not practiced since last Thursday's hamstring strain. The Ravens have a Week 10 bye. While Baltimore is comfortable clearing injured veterans with minimal practice, they've been cautious with players when returning from major injury. Expect the Ravens to give Edwards multiple weeks to recover.

Sunday update: Edwards is doubtful and will be inactive.

Mark Ingram | Knee | Declared out | Inactive

Practice Participation: Thurs - DNP | Fri - DNP | Sat - DNP

Ingram reportedly has an MCL sprain that will need multiple weeks to recover. He will not play and could be placed on injured reserve prior to Monday's roster deadline.

Jarvis Landry | Ankle | Questionable | Monday decision

Practice Participation: Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited | Sat - Limited

Beat writers reported Landry did not do much in drills on Thursday and Friday despite the limited practice designation. Most expect him to see limited snaps if he's active Monday night.

Sunday update: Landry is listed questionable but most local writers expect him to be inactive for one more week. If on the active roster, expect a limited role.

Adam Trautman | Ankle | Not listed | Expected to play

Practice Participation: Thurs - Limited | Fri - Limited | Sat - Full

Trautman may be trending toward returning this week. Watch the New Orleans Saturday practice report and reporter notes for more information through the weekend.

Sunday update: Trautman fully practiced, is not listed on the game status report, and will play.
