Waivers of the Future: Week 16

Jordan McNamara's Waivers of the Future: Week 16 Jordan McNamara Published 12/19/2023

Waivers of the future will focus on making decisions that improve our odds of our dynasty championship. The back of your dynasty roster should be flexible, with preferences made for players you can use in your lineup during the season.

Quarterback

Among the quarterbacks, there are two types of waiver options: those moving up this week and veteran backups.

MOVING UP THIS WEEK

Among the quarterbacks, there are two types of waiver options: those moving up this week and veteran backups.

Trevor Lawrence entered the concussion protocol after Sunday night's loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Jacksonville plays Tampa Bay in what should be a good passing game matchup in week 16, so Lawrence's absence would be impactful to fantasy teams. For the same reason, a spot start for C.J. Beathard could be valuable. Beathard warrants a waiver add this week, even if just to play keep away from rival GMs.

OFFSEASON STASHES

For teams falling out of contention, consider stashing the following options for 2024:

RUNNING BACK

One of the keys to dynasty fantasy football is continuously optimizing your backup running back situation. The last five to ten roster spots on your roster should be very fluid, with little allegiance if the player does not offer the capacity to help your lineup. A constant churn on the back end of your roster is critical.

MOVING UP THIS WEEK

Keaton Mitchell went down with a knee injury that may keep him out for the year, leaving Justice Hill an opportunity to step into a role in the Baltimore backfield for the playoff stretch. Hill was part of a committee with Gus Edwards earlier in the season and should return to the role in week 16. If Edwards were to miss week 17, Hill would be in for a championship week spot start. He warrants an aggressive bid if you cannot take the FAAB waiver money into the offseason.

Trey Sermon stepped up in week 15 after Zach Moss injured his right arm and was forced from the game. Sermon came in and led a committee with Tyler Goodson in relief of Moss, carrying the ball 17 times for 88 yards. He was held out of the passing game but ran 9 routes to only 6 for Goodson. Sermon has been a journeyman in the NFL after being a third-round pick by the 49ers in the 2021 NFL Draft. You will want to monitor the early week reports on Moss and Jonathan Taylor's potential return to the lineup.

Potential stash players include:

WIDE RECEIVER

The odds wide receivers from the waiver wire will become big difference-makers on your dynasty roster are very small. For every Tyreek Hill, there are 100 Travis Fulghams. Your strategy for the wide receiver position should be to find immediate lineup help or a flip candidate.

Ja'Marr Chase suffered an AC joint sprain in his shoulder and could potentially miss multiple weeks. This would allow Tyler Boyd to jump into a bigger role in the offense. Boyd has only averaged 9.1 points per game on the season, good for WR54 in per-game scoring, but he could be in line for a WR3-type opportunity with Chase out. Boyd potentially may be your best available player if you need a spot starter in shallower formats.

Tutu Atwell suffered a concussion in week 14 that kept him out of week 15. While Atwell has been out, Demarcus Robinson has been an every-down player and ran routes on 100% of the dropbacks in week 15. Robinson is a potential spot start for dynasty GMs dealing with injuries in the playoffs. Monitor Atwell's health status ahead of week 16, and if he is out, consider Robinson a spot-start candidate if you are in need.

TIGHT ENDS

There have been no major movements at the tight end position for week 15. However, tight ends that warrant stashing into the offseason include:
