Fixing Your Dynasty Team, Addressing Aaron Rodgers

Jordan McNamara's Fixing Your Dynasty Team, Addressing Aaron Rodgers Jordan McNamara Published 09/14/2023

Each week, there are different moves to make to fix your dynasty team. This is a unique week in dynasty fantasy football. Aaron Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles and will miss the rest of the season.

From a dynasty perspective, there is a big fall. First, Garrett Wilson's stock as a top-10 wide receiver in dynasty is going to take a hit. Week 1 demonstrated the Jets are likely to employ a volume passing attack with Zach Wilson at the helm.

If you have Wilson, consider trying to preserve a star asset.

To get a sense of the market, here are some recent actual trades from MyFantasyLeague.com leagues so you can see what GMs got in return for Wilson. Every league is different of course, but these trades in existing real leagues can give you a pretty good feel for the cost and type of trade package it might take to acquire him.

In a 12-team Superflex- 2PPR for tight end league

Second, dynasty teams with Rodgers will be forced to decide on their direction. Some will want to make a trade to acquire a quarterback. If you have quality quarterbacks, hold a firm line on your trade offers. In a Superflex format, one of your goals should be to build around premium players and premium positions. If you have done this, this is a time to capitalize on. Do not short-sell your quarterback. If you cannot make a deal that is right for you, wait. Because time is on your side. If you do not trade a quarterback to the team that lost Rodgers, a week or two of their team suffering without Rodgers may increase the cost.

For example, I used this technique this week when I offered Jared Goff and a 2024 3rd-round rookie pick for two 2024 1st-round rookie picks. Both picks were likely from playoff teams and later in the first round, but I planned to use the picks to consolidate the top end of my quarterback position. The opposing dynasty GM rejected and counteroffered a single 2024 1st-round rookie pick for Jared Goff, which was an easy reject. If the GM loses the next week or two because of the weakness at their Superflex position, their willingness to pay the price for Goff may go up.

In the alternative, some dynasty GMs may choose to rebuild after losing Rodgers. This is a great opportunity for contending teams.

If Aaron Rodgers is on a Superflex dynasty team, the team is almost certainly one that was planning to contend. With Rodgers turning 39 in December, most dynasty GMs that are rebuilding would have traded Rodgers before Week 1. With Rodgers most likely on a contending team, the dynasty GM may see this as a time to rebuild. Judging by the trade bait updates in the early part of the week, there are a lot of dynasty GMs who are treating the Rodgers injury as a sign it is time to rebuild.

This will create an opportunity to acquire contending players for your dynasty team. When targeting these trades, aim high. When a player with a top 30 valuation in your format becomes available, you need to be in the market to acquire the player. Make offers and create a dialogue with the dynasty GM so you can improve your team direction.

Further down their roster, Rodgers' teams are likely to be rostering older running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends that are likely on the market. This is a good place to look for production that will help contending teams, and you may be able to do it cheaper than you would have before Week 1.
