New Coach Effects: Arizona Cardinals

Jordan McNamara's New Coach Effects: Arizona Cardinals Jordan McNamara Published 03/05/2023

Arizona faces a big change this offseason. The team fired offensive-minded head coach Kliff Kingsbury and hired defensive-minded Jonathan Gannon as his replacement. This could signal a stylistic change in Arizona’s play style, particularly with the history of the team’s new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing.

2022 Arizona Trends

Under Kingsbury, Arizona was a favorable offensive environment. During his stint, Arizona ranked above the league average in early-down pass frequency each season.

Under Kingsbury, the team ranked sixth in early down passing rate behind Kansas City, Buffalo, Tampa Bay, Miami, and Cincinnati.

While the team was pass-centric, much of the pass rate was dependent on Arizona’s game script. Overall, the team was game script neutral in passing rate, meaning the team passed at their expected passing rate based on their game situation.
