Contractual security is a major factor for dynasty valuations, particularly at the tight end position. There are four tight ends who should be monitored as cut candidates in 2023.
Zach Ertz was traded to Arizona in 2021 and took off the second half of the season. Ertz was rewarded with a three-year, $31.65 million contract in the offseason. The contract appears to give Ertz security through 2023, with a cap figure of 12.85 million dollars and only 2.85 million dollars in cap savings. Similarly, 4 million dollars of Ertz’s 8.8-million-dollar 2023 salary are guaranteed. Ertz would not otherwise seem like a threat to be cut, but the Cardinals' selection of Trey McBride in the second round of the NFL Draft raised some eyebrows. The Cardinals could cut Ertz if he completely fell off and McBride broke out as a rookie, but it is unlikely.
Gerald Everett signed a two-year, $12 million contract with the Chargers in free agency. The deal includes 8 million dollars guaranteed, but only 1.5 million dollars is guaranteed in 2023. The Chargers could save 4 million dollars of Everett’s 8-million-dollar cap hit in 2023. Everett is a bit of a luxury in the Chargers offense allowed by the cheap contract for Justin Herbert. Tre McKitty was a third-round selection in the 2021 draft who could see an increased opportunity in 2022 and make Everett expendable in the offseason.
