NOTE: This column is a living document through Tuesday morning. I'll be updating as needed after team press conferences, imaging reports, Monday Night Football injuries, etc. Major changes to the content will be noted in red.
Scroll to the bottom of this article for a quick look table of the week's most pressing injury situations and a review of players on injured reserve / PUP / NFI.
Footballguys will have close and detailed coverage of all injuries this season. Here's a look at my expected schedule. I will do my best to stick to this. Work and family responsibilities may sometimes cause brief delays.
Monday Injury Rounds: Posted Sunday night, updated through Tuesday AM. Detailed analysis of the week's injuries with table for quick review. Offensive injuries will be live Sunday night. Critical defensive and offensive line injuries will be added throughout the day on Monday. I'll be updating with news and analysis through Tuesday.
Wednesday and Thursday Injury Expectations: Posted late Wednesday and Thursday evening. Analysis of the practice participation report with a table including my projection of each injured player's likely game status. Will include discussion of any major breaking injury news.
Sunday Gameday Expectations: Posted by Saturday afternoon, updated through Sunday morning inactives. Will include individual player blurbs with detailed thoughts on the week's injury news and my speculation on player availability and limitations. Will include table highlighting each day's practice participation, official game status, and my availability expectation.
I'll also be contributing to our waiver wire podcast (Tuesday release), our live Sunday morning pregame show (10 ET Sunday on YouTube), and plan at least one weekly Periscope Q&A (shortly before Monday Night Football) with additional shows if/when possible. As always, I will be retweeting key pieces of news and my own reaction and analysis, so make sure you're following @JeneBramel and checking my timeline on Twitter throughout the week.
INJURY ROUNDS
Carson Palmer | Fractured arm | 8+ Weeks
Bruce Arians didn't leave much doubt about Palmer's diagnosis after the game, telling reporters Palmer fractured his arm and would have surgery on Monday. Arians gave an initial timetable of eight weeks. If the timetable doesn't change after surgery, expect the Cardinals to strongly consider injured reserve for Palmer.
Delanie Walker | Right Ankle sprain | Week-to-Week
Walker twisted his foot and ankle underneath a tackler but his mechanism of injury was not consistent with a midfoot sprain or high ankle sprain. His mechanism was violent, however, and he was seen on crutches after the game. The Titans have a bye week coming which should help Walker to recover without missed games. Expect Walker to have an MRI on Monday to further define his injury.
***Monday Update: Mike Mularkey told reporters Walker's injury was more of a bone bruise than a sprain. That doesn't necessarily change the week-to-week timetable or expectation. A painful injury, Walker will need to let the healing progress over the bye week. Consider him hopeful but questionable for Week 9.
Joe Thomas | Tricep injury | Out for Season
Thomas will have an MRI on Monday but it's rare for suspicions of a season-ending tricep tear to be contradicted by imaging studies. Thomas will miss multiple weeks even if the MRI is more reassuring than expected.
***Monday Update: An MRI confirmed Thomas' triceps tendon was torn. He'll have surgery and face 5-6 months of rehab.
Jay Cutler | Cracked ribs | Week-to-Week
Cutler reportedly suffered more than one cracked rib yesterday. The Dolphins play on Thursday night this week, which essentially rules Cutler out. Whether Cutler is able to return in Week 9 will depend on pain tolerance and mobility.
Others of Note: Mike Wallace suffered a concussion and will likely miss Thursday night's game. Ryan Kelly (hamstring), Trai Turner (knee), Cam Robinson (ankle), Larry Warford (abdomen) are all in danger of missing time.
FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENTS
Leonard Fournette | Right ankle sprain | Day-to-Day
Unlike the DeMarco Murray and the Titans, the Jaguars chose to use their Week 8 bye for additional rehab and recovery for their lead running back. Fournette was cleared to return last week and told reporters he expected to play midweek. However, his ankle didn't respond as well as hoped on Thursday and Friday and Fournette could not convince the Jacksonville medical staff to clear him to play. With two additional weeks of recovery time, there's a good chance Fournette returns to his pre-injury workload in Week 9.
Andrew Luck | right shoulder labrum repair | Week-to-Week | Week 14+ return
Here's what I wrote on Wednesday after news of Luck's cortisone shot was reported:
***Andrew Luck needed a steroid injection to address inflammation in his shoulder this week. Though Luck's rehab and recovery have progressed more slowly than hoped, this is the first known setback in the process. But this isn't a new issue. Luck didn't wake up on Wednesday, report new soreness, and have a cortisone injection on the same day. This issue has been present for days, and possibly weeks.
It's a significant setback for his chances of playing this season. He was arguably 2-3 weeks from playing before today's news. He'll now need at least one week, and likely two weeks, of rest while the medical staff re-evaluates his progress after the injection. He'll then step back to where he was two weeks ago with a slow progression of return to practice. Do the math and Luck's earliest possible return could be six weeks from now. And that's if he progresses smoothly from today's treatment.
Realistically, I think Luck is a longshot to return in 2017. For months, the Colts have refused to put a timetable on Luck's recovery. I find it odd that Chris Ballard continued to say Luck has no timetable for return -- but told reporters definitively that injured reserve was not a consideration. All involved have been very cautious through this process. I see no reason to rush by a week or two at the end of the season. If Luck's recovery progresses perfectly from this point and if the Colts remain in contention and if Jacoby Brissett has an unexpected hiccup along the way -- we could see Luck after Week 14. More likely, the team decides to continue the strengthening program during the offseason.
There are two other important questions still unanswered here. Why does Luck have inflammation in the shoulder joint? What's the likelihood Luck will return to his pre-injury form in 2018? Those questions are outside the scope of today's feature. I'll address them in depth in next Monday's injury rounds feature. The short version is this: While there's still a chance Luck can return to form, there is reason for concern that this is more than routine post-operative soreness and Luck isn't guaranteed a full recovery.
I discussed Luck's situation with RotoViz contributor and upper extremity specialist Dr. Jeff Budoff last week. He thought there were multiple possible reasons for Luck's soreness. Noting that a posterior labrum repair can be a technically difficult surgical procedure, Budoff wondered about lingering cartilage issues, persistent laxity in the shoulder joint, or shoulder tightness that was slow to respond to rehab. All would cause soreness and inflammation in the joint. All would require more deliberate rehab. And all could make a full return to form difficult. There's no way to know for certain if Luck is dealing with one of these anatomic considerations but it seems unlikely Luck would require a joint injection for mild soreness this late in his rehab program.
The Colts would like to see Luck healthy enough to play in a game in 2017. To meet that goal, further rehab will have to go perfectly -- and that hasn't been the case since January.
Stefon Diggs | Groin strain | Week-to-Week
Diggs has frequently said his groin strain isn't as severe as last season -- when he missed multiple weeks. But, as we've discussed on our live podcasts and I've written here, that doesn't mean this strain isn't severe enough to limit him for multiple weeks. Diggs is now facing travel to London to face Cleveland in Week 8 and a Vikings' bye in Week 9. He's yet to practice after his most recent injury. If he's not working in some capacity on Wednesday, we could see Minnesota leave him stateside and rest him through their Week 9 bye.
Others of Note: Luke Kuechly managed a limited Friday practice but remains in the concussion protocol. I'll be watching the early week press conferences and midweek practice participation reports for more information on Emmanuel Sanders, Golden Tate, DeVante Parker, Sterling Shepard, Willie Snead. Sam Bradford and Teddy Bridgewater are not expected back until after Minnesota's Week 9 bye. Bridgewater is likely closer to returning than Bradford. C.J. Prosise was active but on the field for only one play before his day ended.
