5 WRs to Sell In Dynasty Before Free Agency

Alfredo Brown's 5 WRs to Sell In Dynasty Before Free Agency Alfredo Brown Published 03/10/2023

The 2023 NFL offseason is nearly in full swing. On March 13, the NFL's legal tampering period begins, and that means teams can start negotiating with free agents and agreeing to terms.

5. DeAndre Hopkins (WR - Arizona Cardinals)

The best time to have sold Hopkins was during the 2022 season. From weeks 7-15, Hopkins was the WR5 in PPR points per game. So much has changed since then. Kyler Murray suffered a torn ACL, Kliff Kingsbury has been fired, and Hopkins' time in Arizona appears to be over.

Hopkins turns 31 in June and could find himself on a new roster before the start of the 2023 season. Many have speculated that Hopkins could be headed to New England, where he'd be the lead receiver in a Mac Jones-led offense. No, thank you. That's enough to make me sell him right now, then add on the fact that he'll be at the edge of the age cliff - In my opinion, Hopkins is a screaming "sell" in Dynasty.

Ideal Asking Price: Top-10 2023 Rookie Pick

4. Mike Evans (WR - Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

Another older receiver, and one who will be starting his age-30 season without Tom Brady. Yet even with Brady, Dynasty managers saw a production decline from Evans in 2022. Evans saw just a 16% target share last season while only scoring 6 touchdowns - his lowest in five seasons. The good news for Dynasty managers looking to sell is that Evans still finished as the WR11 last season, thanks in large part to a monster game in week 17 where he went for 10-207-3.

Prior to that explosion at the end of the season, Evans was the WR23 on the season and the WR30 on points per game basis. The Bucs might be trending towards a rebuild if they can't make a move for a big-name quarterback - even If they do, I believe Evans' best days are behind him.

3. Amari Cooper (WR - Cleveland Browns)

Cooper just had, arguably, the best season of his career - totaling over 1,100 yards and 9 touchdowns. A lot of that production, in 2022, came with Jacoby Brissett under center. When Deshaun Watson took over, the numbers dropped off quite a bit for Cooper.

Quarterback Targets per game Receptions per game Receiving Yards per game Receiving TD per game Fantasy Points per game (PPR)
Jacoby Brissett 8.5 5.2 72.0 0.6 16.1
Deshaun Watson 6.5 3.5 61.3 0.3 11.6

There's no denying that Cooper still has talent and Watson needed to shake off the rust, but Cooper will be 29 years old this season. I can't imagine his value getting any higher than it is right now. Cooper finished as the WR10 in PPR format, and his name still carries value in fantasy circles, but expecting another top-10 season seems like wishful thinking. There was also the curious case of Cooper's home/road splits - at home, Cooper averaged 18.2 PPR points per game, while on the road, that average dropped to just 11.7, with five out of eight games producing 8 or fewer PPR points. If your Dynasty team is competing for a championship in 2023, then hold on to Cooper because he can be a decent WR2 in most formats.

2. Deebo Samuel (WR - San Francisco 49ers)

Another sell candidate that is probably a year too late - but better late than never. I was out on Samuel last season at his WR5 ADP (average draft position) in Dynasty, and for good reason. There were just too many questions surrounding his health, his role in the offense, and the quarterback position in San Francisco heading into the 2022 season.

All of those concerns were nothing compared to the effect that the Week 7 acquisition of Christian McCaffrey had on Samuel's fantasy value. After that trade, Samuel only had one top-20 PPR performance over his final six weeks of play. There's hope that the name value of Samuel holds up amongst Dynasty managers still willing to roster him.

Ideal Asking Price: Top-6 2023 Rookie Pick

1. Davante Adams (WR - Las Vegas Raiders)

Adams is coming off an excellent season with the Raiders at age 30. As we all know, father time remains undefeated. Eventually, the most talented players slow down, and production dips. Adams finds himself in a particularly volatile situation where the Raiders have moved on from Derek Carr and may look toward a rebuild by taking a rookie quarterback in the NFL Draft.

Adams is coming off three straight seasons of at least 1,300 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns - so it isn't hard to convince your league mates of his obvious fantasy value. But as a Dynasty manager, I wouldn't want to ride the wave of a rookie quarterback taking over in Las Vegas.
