One of the most fun parts of managing a deep dynasty roster is cultivating value by planting seeds at the end of your bench during the offseason. We’ll go position-by-position and separate players out into Snorkel, Scuba, and Submarine levels to serve dynasty players of all levels.
Here's a look at quarterbacks, where the deep dive is more important than ever with the rise of 2QB/Superflex leagues.
Snorkel
Tyler Huntley, BAL - Huntley is probably going to be on a roster now because of his redraft value. But he’ll have some legs in Dynasty just because the Ravens and Lamar Jackson are at a crossroads, and he could be a bridge quarterback. Huntley has already demonstrated that he’s a viable fantasy quarterback, but after last season, he is not a viable starter.
Malik Willis, TEN - Willis has shown us his raw tools so that we could see how some had him going in the first round, and we have seen just far he has to go as a field general and pocket passer, which made him fall to the third. He’s a long-term project but should get the first shot to start after Ryan Tannehill, and Willis has a high ceiling as a fantasy option. Early indications from new GM Ran Carthon are that Tannehill will be a Titan this season, so Willis’s window may not open this year.
Desmond Ridder, ATL - The Falcons are potentially outside the range of the top four quarterback prospects without an expensive trade-up, so we could see Ridder get an extended audition this season.
Jordan Love, GB - We will more likely than not see Love start for the Packers this season. Whether that will increase or decrease his dynasty value is yet to be seen, but even in 1QB leagues, he’s worth a spot if bench size allows because he has fantasy-friendly tools.
Bailey Zappe, NE - Zappe outplayed Mac Jones, and he should get a legitimate shot to unseat Jones. Zappe is a low-ceiling option in 1QB leagues and a must-roster in 2QB/Superflex.
Matt Corral, CAR - Corral ended up on injured reserve before the season, which is sad because we would have seen him by now, given the Panthers problems at quarterback. Maybe that was helpful for him since he probably would have looked as bad as the rest of the offense. He’s another young quarterback with a good run tool to boost his fantasy ceiling, and like the Falcons, the Panthers may not add a long-term answer at quarterback without a splashy draft or Lamar Jackson draft.
Sam Howell, WAS - Howell had a good preseason that poised him to be an option to evaluate by throwing in the fire if and when the Commanders were eliminated from the playoffs, but that’s not going to happen until very late, if at all, this year. Taylor Heinicke is a free agent, and Carson Wentz has been released. The Commanders would have to mortgage the future to get a top-four quarterback prospect, so Howell is the favorite to start Week 1.
Brock Purdy, SF - Purdy isn’t under the radar any longer. He projects more as a backup than a starter but has a chance to change that perception, especially if Trey Lance gets hurt or falters this season.
Kyle Trask, TB - Unless the Bucs make a significant investment at quarterback, Trask will start some or all of the 2023 season for Tampa. He at least has good weapons to help him after he gets thrown into the deep end.
Scuba
Gardner Minshew, PHI - Minshew is a free agent, and if Mitchell Trubisky and Marcus Mariota can get bridge quarterback gigs, Minshew can too, although his stock went down the more he played last season.
Zach Wilson, NYJ - Wilson’s best chance to be fantasy relevant may come in a new organization after a career near-death experience. Still, he is mobile enough with great arm talent to keep on the end of your dynasty 2QB/Superflex bench until we see what the next chapter holds for him.
Jacoby Brissett, CLE - Brissett was one of the 32 best quarterbacks in the NFL in 2022 and should get a job as a bridge quarterback this season.
Teddy Bridgewater, MIA - Bridgewater seemed to loosen up piloting the high-flying Dolphins offense. He’ll be an option in free agency for teams in the market for a bridge quarterback.
Jarrett Stidham, LV - Stiddy shocked everyone with his play at the end of last season, and Derek Carr is gone. What is the plan at quarterback for the Raiders? Stidham may be more prominent in it than we think.
