IDP Stock Market Week 7

Matt Montgomery's IDP Stock Market Week 7 Matt Montgomery Published 10/18/2023

Through the first six weeks of the football season, we have learned a lot about a lot of players. Whether you are in a starter IDP league with more generalized positions, such as DL or DB, or individually positioned players that mimic the real NFL, there is something here for you. You are never truly finished constructing your IDP fantasy team. You have a foundation built through a draft or salary cap, and you must tweak that as the season goes on. This week, we have some new names and even a potential sleeper or two! Buckle up, guys! And ring that bell!

The Fortune 5

Jordan Hicks: Hicks is a player who has had a very up-and-down career. When Hicks plays his best football, he is an absolute superstar for your IDP roster. He is just that this season! He was producing a very consistent season before last week, but he exploded in Week 6 for 10 tackles, one interception, a fumble recovery, and a touchdown! He turned in a week-winning performance, but his season numbers may be the most impressive. He has just one game where he hasn't scored double-digit points, which was Week 1! If you took a chance on Hicks, you'd be thoroughly rewarded!

Haason Reddick: The season couldn't have started much worse for Reddick, who appeared to get lost in the forest that is the Philadelphia front seven. He seems to be slowly coming into his own lately, though. Last Week was his best week yet, a five tackle, 2.5 sack performance marking the second consecutive week of multiple sacks. He is on a three-game streak for sacks and seems to be settling into his role. He has played the second-most snaps at the position thus far and is well on his way to matching his 16-sack total from last season.

Bobby Okereke: There is something to be said about players who can consistently improve as the year progresses. There is even more to be said when they improve on great performances! Okereke is on a tear currently. He has not yet had a game where he has scored less than the week prior and is stuffing the stat sheet in all areas of the game. Need a run stop? He has 53 tackles through six weeks. Need a pass coverage guy? He has five defended passes already. Okereke is here to stay and has been a steal as an IDP for his new team.

C.J. Mosley: Last week, we were all giddy about Quincy Williams, and rightfully so. Don't overlook the season Mosley is putting up next to him at linebacker. He is very much a tackle-dependent player who doesn't necessarily fill the stat sheet up, but he is consistently near the ball and takes down the man he's tasked to attack. He has 59 total tackles through the first six weeks and has great competition alongside him, which further shows us how outstanding of an IDP he is. Mosley is still an elite LB1, regardless of the teammates around him.

T.J. Edwards: Edwards may be the most underrated IDP linebacker in the entire league. It isn't just because of this year either. He is, without a doubt, a must-start in all formats and has been since 2021. Year in and year out, he is close to the top of the league in tackles and in IDP points, but we rarely ever talk about his true game-changing ability. There are very few players I would value above him, and even if he moves teams, he's shown that his game travels very nicely. Seventy tackles already to go along with two sacks? I think anyone who watches football knows these stats are insane!

The Falling 4

Zach Cunningham: This one hurt because I have a soft spot for the past. Cunningham used to be the no doubt IDP1 who was a highly coveted prize. He is now a shell of that former player, and it appears his resurgence, which was most recently shown, is over. When Nakobe Dean went down due to injury, there was a gap to fill in the Eagle linebacking corps and it was filled valiantly by Cunnigham and counterpart Nicolaus Morrow. Dean's return showed us fewer snaps for Cunningham and, even worse, fewer stats. Cunningham doesn't need to be rostered. Take it from the guy clinging to the past; it's over here, folks.

Joey Bosa: It may be too early to give the Cunninghame treatment to Bosa, but we certainly are on the back nine of his career. Bosa is an explosive player who plays a position that gets into car-crash-style situations almost every play. He has a history of being oft-injured, which eventually catches up to you. He is a good sell-now player who can produce good return for both the manager looking to move him and the manager looking to acquire him. This would be a low point to sell, so there's something to be said about holding just a bit longer, but the name recognition will always be there. Let's see what we can get for him.

Brian Burns: This was the most shocking when evaluating the market this week. Burns is typically an elite player who produces points in bunches and is often the lone bright spot of an otherwise non-existent defense. He is here because of his inconsistency and inability to put together back-to-back good weeks. He's either outstanding or not worth a start, and players like that are hard to manage. If I were an opposing manager, I would look to buy him now while he's on a low point going into the bye week. As a Burns manager, I would be more apt to keep him unless there's a pretty penny offered.

Myles Garrett: This has a chance to come back and bite me, but I can't be the only one who feels this way. Is Myles Garrett just having his worst season yet? He has turned into a sack-dependent player who is almost a risky start without the padding of those big plays. I know he has 5.5 sacks this season, but 3.5 were in one game. If you took them away, he has eight total tackles. Ask yourself this. If you had a player that had 13 total tackles but 5.5 were sacks, would you be comfortable that he would continue that pace? You're not trading Garrett, but you need to remember something has to give here. He is pacing for just five additional tackles than he did last season, which was a season in which he missed games.

Premiere Pennies

Tony Adams: A safety who is gobbling up tackle numbers with the last name Adams is a penny? That's because it's not Jamal! Tony Adams is making a name for himself this season for the Jets. At 24 years old, he has 22 tackles in four games played this season. When he is healthy, he plays nearly 100% of the team's defensive snaps and is showing us an ability to produce tackles. He had his first big play of the season last week, an interception of Jalen Hurts, and is likely not someone who is rostered in your league. Next week he is on a bye week, so if you have the roster spot to stash, he is a perfect candidate as a young sleeper who can be a productive player for many years.

Blake Cashman: The Houston Texans linebacker position has been fun to watch, and why wouldn't it be? The team is coached by IDP legend Demeco Ryans, so we shouldn't be surprised that multiple linebackers on this team are valuable. The latest addition to this corps of players that is effective is Cashman. Cashman has arrived seemingly out of nowhere. He has played 20% or fewer snaps in three out of six games but has played nearly 100% in the last two games. In those games, he has 24 total tackles and two defended passes. He appears to have secured valuable playing time and may still be available on your waiver wire. Get him now, folks; he won't be around long.

Jonathon Cooper: Denver has almost always had effective pass rushers in their recent history, but with the negative fog that seems to follow them this season, we haven't really talked too much about their high points. One of these players who seems to be playing his way into the hearts of IDP managers is Johnathon Cooper. Cooper has had 30 tackles and four sacks this season. He is 25 years old and may be the most promising young player on this defense not named Patrick Surtain. Cooper will need to prove to us more in the next few weeks, but he is worthy of a roster spot as he ascends in his first season of legit playing time.

Believe it or not, we are nearly at the halfway point of the season. So, these decisions are becoming more and more critical. Whether you decide to snipe your league mates on the waiver wire or hold that board room discussion about potentially moving assets, your team must be tweaked each week.
