Waivers of the future will focus on making decisions that improve our odds of our dynasty championship. The back of your dynasty roster should be flexible, with preferences made for players you can use in your lineup during the season.
Quarterbacks
Among the quarterbacks, there are three types of waiver options: those moving up this week, veteran backups, and potential young players with future roles.
Moving Up this Week
The following players warrant waiver wire consideration this week.
- Brett Rypien, DEN
Russell Wilson suffered a scary concussion in Week 14, and will be in the protocol during the week. Brett Rypien replaced him, completing four of his eight attempts for 16 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Rypien started one game in 2020 and averaged 5.6 yards per attempt, on 96 career attempts, with three touchdowns and six interceptions. Rypien is more of a keep-away option from other quarterback-desperate teams in the playoffs than he is for your own team.
- Anthony Brown, BAL
Like Rypien, Anthony Brown finds himself relevant in the fantasy football playoffs. Starter Lamar Jackson is expected to miss at least week 15 with a sprained PCL, while Tyler Huntley is in concussion protocol. Brown played in relief in Week 14, and completed three of his five attempts for 16 yards while running three times for -5 yards. Brown was a UDFA out of Oregon after transferring from Boston College and ran for 1121 rushing yards with 15 rushing touchdowns. He is a minimal keep-away type of waiver bid, which could be an option in future weeks if Jackson and Huntley miss time.
- Mitchell Trubisky, PIT
Kenny Pickett suffered a concussion in week 14 and is questionable for return in week 15. Mitchell Trubisky played nearly the entire game in relief, completing 22 of his 30 attempts for 276 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. Trubisky started the first four games of the season before turning over the keys over to Pickett. Trubisky has had fantasy success in his career and would be the consolation prize to Colt McCoy on waivers.
- Colt McCoy, ARI
Kyler Murray suffered a season-ending knee injury on Monday Night Football. This gives an extended opportunity to Colt McCoy. McCoy started two games this season, including throwing for 228 yards and half a touchdown per game in the starts. Both games were against strong defenses (Rams and 49ers), with Marquise Brown missing both and Rondale Moore missing one. Arizona has the offensive pieces to support McCoy in the QB2 range. For teams in need of a quarterback, McCoy is a 100% waiver bid in premium formats.
- Desmond Ridder, ATL
Desmond Ridder has been named the starter, with Marcus Mariota landing on injured reserve. Ridder is likely rostered in your quarterback premium leagues but warrants a speculative addition in your start 1QB leagues.
Veteran Backups
As a general rule, you should have a limited amount of backup quarterbacks on your monitor list. With roster spots tight, optimized dynasty rosters under 25 spots in Superflex or quarterback premium. If you are in 25 to 35-man rosters and have a roster spot, these quarterbacks are the premium backups:
- Tyrod Taylor, NYG
- Gardner Minshew, PHI
In leagues deeper than 35 spots, consider:
- Chad Henne, KC
- Chase Daniel, LAC
Running Back
One of the keys to dynasty fantasy football is continuously optimizing your backup running back situation. The last five to ten roster spots on your roster should be very fluid, with little allegiance if the player does not offer the capacity to help your lineup. A constant churn on the back end of your roster is critical.
