NOTE: During the regular season, this column is a living document through Tuesday morning. I'll be updating as needed after team press conferences, imaging reports, Monday Night Football injuries, etc. Major changes to the content will be noted in red.
Scroll to the bottom of this article for a quick look table of the week's most pressing injury situations and a review of players on injured reserve / PUP / NFI.
Footballguys will have close and detailed coverage of all injuries this season. Here's a look at my expected schedule. I will do my best to stick to this. Work and family responsibilities may sometimes cause brief delays.
Monday Injury Rounds: Posted Sunday night, updated through Tuesday AM. Detailed analysis of the week's injuries with table for quick review. Offensive injuries will be live Sunday night. Critical defensive and offensive line injuries will be added throughout the day on Monday. I'll be updating with news and analysis through Tuesday.
Midweek Injury Expectations: Posted Wednesday night and updated Thursday. Analysis of the practice participation report with a table including my projection of each injured player's likely game status. Will include discussion of any major breaking injury news.
Sunday Gameday Expectations: Posted by Saturday afternoon, updated through Sunday morning inactives. Will include individual player blurbs with detailed thoughts on the week's injury news and my speculation on player availability and limitations. Will include table highlighting each day's practice participation, official game status, and my availability expectation.
I'll be contributing to our waiver wire podcast (Tuesday release) and our live Sunday morning pregame show (10 ET Sunday on YouTube). I will also be retweeting key pieces of news and my own reaction and analysis, so make sure you're following @JeneBramel and checking my timeline on Twitter throughout the week.
INJURY ROUNDS
Travis Frederick | Guillain-Barre Syndrome | Month-to-Month | Questionable 2018 return
I'll have more on offensive line and defensive injuries leading into the Week 1 games, but Frederick's unique situation deserves comment.
After visiting multiple specialists to determine a course of treatment for recurrent symptoms believed to be due to stingers, Frederick was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), a disorder where the body's immune system begins attacking nerves. The inflammation around the nerves can cause pain, numbness, and weakness. Often progressive without treatment, GBS sometimes leads to paralysis and prolonged hospitalizations. With treatment, the progression of the disorder can be slowed or halted. And most people will make a full recovery. But the damage to the nerves can take many months to heal and cannot be accelerated.
Frederick was seen walking on the sideline at Dallas' preseason game last weekend. That's an excellent sign his symptoms have not progressed but doesn't provide much information about how quickly his recovery could occur. With continued therapy and rehabilitation, Frederick may return to his previous form and condition. Still, it's hard to project a 2018 return and it's very likely he'll miss more games than he plays this year.
Marqise Lee | Multiple ligament left knee injury | 2019 return
The Jaguars haven't confirmed the extent of Lee's injury but video evidence strongly suggested he tore at least two ligaments (ACL and MCL) and possibly more. An ACL reconstruction and MCL repair would be a difficult enough recovery (9-12 months). If there is damage to additional ligaments, meniscus, cartilage, nerve tissue, or other structures, Lee's recovery will be still more complicated. Expect the Jaguars to place Lee on injured reserve soon.
Update: The Jaguars confirmed Lee will have reconstructive knee surgery and be placed on season-ending injured reserve this week.
Josh Gordon | Hamstring soreness | Day-to-Day | Probable Week 1
Even the most well-conditioned athletes can have soreness after a strenuous workout. That's likely what's happened with Gordon, who spent multiple weeks away from training camp in early August. Gordon has continued to participate in individual drills and it does not appear he strained either hamstring. However, muscle soreness and fatigue heighten the risk of further injury. Gordon should be cleared to return to practice. If he's not -- or there's any indication of an aggravation after his return -- his injury would then be considered week-to-week, putting his Week 1 availability in question.
Evan Engram | Concussion | Day-to-Day | Probable Week 1
Engram left the third preseason game and was diagnosed with a concussion. Within 24 hours, Engram was allowed to do light exercise. That's evidence his symptoms improved overnight and the training and medical staff were comfortable moving Engram through the early stages of the return-to-play protocol. If Engram continues to make steady progress, he'll be cleared to play in Week 1.
Follow-up Appointments
Carson Wentz | Left ACL reconstruction / LCL repair | Week-to-Week | Questionable Week 1
Wentz's steady progress through the final stages of rehab continues. The Eagles refuse to rush the process, however, even after a scary hit to Nick Foles' throwing shoulder proved to be of no concern. Wentz was cleared for and participated in team drills last week but has not yet been cleared for contact. That needs to happen early this week. The Eagles are not going to enter a short week of preparation before the Thursday night opener without knowing how Wentz responds to the possibility of contact.
Last week, I wrote, "A week of practice without concern would move [Wentz] to probable." That assumed the Eagles were prepared to clear Wentz for contact. Watch closely for news of Wentz's status early this week.
Quick insight on other key offensive players currently rehabbing
Antonio Brown (quad strain) -- The Steelers continue to limit Brown's practice participation but there are no indications he won't be ready for Week 1. Expect Brown to be cleared to do more in practice this week.
Saquon Barkley (hamstring strain) -- Barkley returned to full practice participation on Sunday. The first 7-10 days after returning to practice hold the highest risk of aggravation. A smooth week of practice would be very reassuring for Barkley's Week 1 prospects.
Jerick McKinnon (calf strain) -- Unlike Barkley, McKinnon hasn't returned to practice. Videos posted of full-speed footwork drills and consistent reports that McKinnon will be ready for Week 1 are good signs.
Doug Baldwin (knee soreness) -- Baldwin has been running at speed for over a week. Assuming he's cleared to do more football-related activity this week and has no setbacks, Baldwin will have a good chance at a full Week 1 workload.
Alshon Jeffery (rotator cuff repair) -- Jeffery's rehab continues on schedule but he will still be right up against a Week 1 return. Already in condition, Jeffery will be ready quickly whenever clearance for contact comes. Unfortunately, it's still possible Jeffery isn't close to gaining clearance and starts the season on the PUP list.
Marlon Mack (hamstring strain) -- Mack has a mid-grade hamstring strain and there have been no indications he'll be ready to return to practice in time for a Week 1 return.
Sony Michel (knee drainage) -- Michel hasn't been seen in the Patriots' locker room or on the practice field in nearly three weeks. He needs to be cleared to return to practice soon to have any chance of playing in Week 1.
Rex Burkhead (knee injury) -- The exact nature of Burkhead's injury remains unclear but he's returned to individual drills and looks likely to be ready for opening weekend.
Rishard Matthews (meniscectomy) -- Matthews had part of his knee meniscus removed three weeks ago. The Titans activated him from the PUP list this weekend, making it likely he'll be ready for Week 1.
Rashaad Penny (finger fracture) -- Penny is expected to play in Week 1. The presence of Chris Carson and the ongoing offensive line concerns in Seattle will be more limiting than his health.
Delanie Walker (toe injury) -- Walker has not returned to practice but beat writers expect him to do so soon. Walker routinely plays through injury. Unless he remains out this week, he should be available in Week 1.
