Roundtable Week 8: Four Veteran QBs Walked into A Bar...

Matt Waldman's Roundtable Week 8: Four Veteran QBs Walked into A Bar... Matt Waldman Published 10/27/2022

Welcome to Week 8 of the 2022 Footballguys Roundtable. Our intrepid panel of fantasy pundits discusses and debates four topics every week. Topics are now split into separate features.

This week's roundtable features these four topics:

Four Veteran NFL QBs Walk into A Bar...

Matt Waldman: Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Matt Stafford, and Russell Wilson walk into a bar...Which ones turn it around this year and emerge as top-10 passers, if any?

  • Which ones turn it around this year and emerge as a top-10 passer, if any?
  • Which ones continue to underwhelm if any?
  • Which ones have a bad year but rebound next year?
  • Does Brady keep playing after not having a season to his expectation?

Jason Wood: Brady didn't blow up his marriage to a supermodel to end his G.O.A.T. career in shambles. Unlike the other veteran passers, Brady has a coaching staff, playbook, and receiving corps intact that helped him put up elite years in 2020 and 2021. The only difference is the offensive line play, and I believe Tampa Bay will mortgage its future to add help there before the trade deadline.

Joseph Haggan: Stafford has the best opportunity to turn around his 2022 season. He has the most offensively-minded coach with the best supporting cast. all of these QBs have been under fire due to poor offensive line play, but Stafford is the only one who has truly played through the situation before. He faced seasons like this every year when with the Lions. Aaron Rodgers has always shown that if he does not trust his receivers, he won't throw in their direction. This year is not any different, and Aaron Jones may end up leading this team in receptions. Tom Brady is an utter mess, and I think that his home situation is truly taking a toll on his mental state. Russell Wilson is battling injury, a poor offensive line, inept offensive play-calling, and a new coach for the first time in his NFL career.

Jeff Bell: Cheating here, but for as bad as everything about the Buccaneers has been, Tom Brady still sits within the top 12 in fantasy and has a healthy-ish Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. The Buccaneers feel broken and can not run the ball, the loss of Ali Marpet has hurt, and the defense is uncharacteristically bad, but the team still sits in first place. The other three face more significant concerns.

Drew Davenport: I'm going to be stubborn with my Russell Wilson support. I don't believe he suddenly forgot how to play football. The nagging injuries and learning a new system are making it seem like Wilson can't play anymore and won't be a good fantasy asset the rest of the way. But things are taking shape. Wilson has a bye in week nine, but after his bye, he should be healthy and finally have some chemistry with his pass catchers. At that point, the Denver schedule gets quite favorable, and they face an incredibly soft pass defense schedule to finish the season. The bonus is that he faces the Chiefs in Week 14 and Week 17, and this should force him to have to air it out to keep up. Wilson feels like the best bet to turn things around.

Andy Hicks: Look at their weapons. It’s Tom Brady in a heartbeat.
