Scouting Report

Roman Hemby left high school as a three-star recruit, choosing to stay close to home at Maryland. After a productive sophomore season, his role narrowed over the next two years in a crowded backfield, prompting a transfer in search of a clearer workload. Hemby transferred to Indiana. While Indiana's backfield was split between Hemby and Kaelon Black, Hemby had a slight edge in carries and rushing yards, eclipsing 1,000 yards for the first time in his five-year career. Hemby is an upright runner who uses his patience and vision to attack gaps. His acceleration falls short of elite, but he's hard to catch with a full head of steam. He regularly finds a way to lean forward and pick up extra yards. As a receiver, Hemby has legitimate chops. He can line up in the slot or run routes out of the backfield, providing coaches with exciting elasticity. Hemby led a backfield for each of his last four college seasons, showing durability. While his lack of short-area explosion likely caps his upside, Hemby projects as a dependable committee back whose vision, hands, and efficiency can translate in the right scheme.

Rundown

Hemby has been a workhorse in college for each of the last four seasons, but a lack of short-area explosion could cap his upside at the next level.
