Monday Injury Rounds: Week 8

Injury Rounds

Breece Hall | ACL tear / Meniscus tear | Season-ending injury

Video didn't clearly show Hall's injury but Robert Saleh told reporters after the game the team believes Hall tore his ACL.

Hall will have an MRI on Monday but imaging almost always confirms the medical examination. Expect Hall to have reconstructive surgery and miss the rest of the season. If there are no associated injuries, Hall should be ready for training camp next summer.

Monday update: The Jets and multiple national reporters confirmed Hall's torn ACL diagnosis. Hall also likely has a meniscus injury. He'll need surgery to reconstruct the ACL and 8-9 months recovery time.

DK Metcalf | Left knee injury | Week-to-week | Doubtful Week 8

Metcalf injured his left knee and was carted to the locker room. Pete Carroll told reporters Metcalf "came down on his knee in an odd way" and the extent of the injury was still undetermined.

Video angles are possibly consistent with an ACL injury but other diagnoses are possible. The team elected to do x-rays in the stadium after the injury -- which suggests the field exam did not suggest an ACL tear. I'll update after Monday's MRI.

Monday update: Pete Carroll told reporters Metcalf "hurt his patellar some" but the MRI report was more reassuring than the team expected. Carroll refused to rule Metcalf out for Week 8. Whether Metcalf suffered a low-grade patellar tendon strain or a partial dislocation of his kneecap is unclear. Regardless of the specific diagnosis, swelling and stiffness will make it very unlikely he'll improve enough to play this week.

Mike Williams | Right high ankle sprain | Week-to-week | Bye Week 8

Williams told reporters he suffered an ankle sprain. Video clearly showed evidence of a high ankle sprain. The Chargers will further evaluate with an MRI on Monday. Although the Chargers have a Week 8 bye, it's possible Williams will still miss time.

Monday update: Brandon Staley confirmed Williams will miss multiple weeks with his ankle sprain. Don't expect Williams to return until Week 10 at the earliest.

Follow Up Appointments

DAndre Swift | Left shoulder sprain / Left ankle sprain | Questionable Week 8

After a full week of limited practices and reassuring quotes from his running backs coach, Swift looked likely to return in Week 7. Unfortunately, Sunday morning reports were ominously pessimistic, with Adam Schefter noting the Lions were leaning toward giving Swift another week to heal.

There were no indications of a setback, and Swift is still likely day-to-day. Consider him questionable until he's able to fully practice or there's a clear report from Swift or the team stating he'll return to action.

Russell Wilson | Hamstring strain | Questionable Week 8

Wilson did not move well in practice last week and was inactive on Sunday. Weekend reports described Wilson's injury as a "partially torn hamstring" and mid-grade injuries like these generally require 2-4 weeks of rehab and recovery.

Quarterbacks can return at the lower limit of the timetable but Wilson needs to be mobile to be successful. Nathaniel Hackett told reporters after the game Wilson is "trending in the right direction" to play this week. However, the Broncos travel to London and have a bye in Week 9. If Wilson hasn't improved by midweek, he may not return until Week 10.

J.K. Dobbins | Arthroscopic knee surgery | Injured reserve | Target return Week 12++

Dobbins chose to have scar tissue from his reconstructive surgery addressed last week after continued stiffness limited him in Week 6. The Ravens moved him to injured reserve, which -- accounting for the team's Week 10 bye -- will keep Dobbins out through at least Week 12.

Adam Schefter reported an early timetable of 4-6 weeks. Expect the Ravens to remain cautious with Dobbins as they did during the preseason. Week 12 would be less than five weeks from his procedure. More likely, Dobbins will continue rehabbing until the Ravens are certain he's in full condition to return. Brown likely won't return until Week 14 after the Cardinals' bye week.
