QUARTERBACKS
Theme of the Week: Matthew Stafford
Stafford (and the Rams) are miring through a middling year. Stafford is having his highest INT rate since 2009 and his lowest TD rate over that same span. In short, if you believe Stafford will bounce back, or at least not continue down a swift path to retirement, this down season offers a significant buying opportunity in the dynasty trade market. The dip of the mid-30s established quarterback has been discussed in this weekly post and Stafford has actually been better than the horrible TD-INT Rate Ratio mentioned above in some of his more instructive ancillary metrics. The good news is Stafford is being traded in the QB18-22 zone of value, a stark drop from even a month ago when firmly a top-15 quarterback.
- Key trade idea: Stafford for 23 2nd, 24 2nd
Acquiring Stafford for a non-1st is an ideal approach to the buying market. Stafford likely sits as a team's QB2 or even QB3 if acquiring him midseason with still top-12 upside for a given season or stretch.
- Key trade idea: Stafford for Chase Claypool
Claypool has some reset-the-clock buzz in the trade market with the move to Chicago, but we still need to answer the question if Claypool is good and if he can turn into a WR1 for NFL and fantasy terms. Unless that answer is yes, this is an easy win receiving Stafford in a premium format, even if, in this case, it is a 10-team league.
