Random Shots From Week 4

Joe Bryant's Random Shots From Week 4 Joe Bryant Published 10/06/2021

Hi Folks,

We do a ton of insightful, thoughtful, and serious features here at Footballguys with smart people thinking deeply for you.

This is not one of those features.

This is Random Shots and it's a few pages of me downloading my brain that gets stuffed with way too many random items from too many hours watching, reading about, and listening to football every weekend and throughout the week. It's the only way I manage. Here's hoping it has some value for you.

We'll see. Now let's get to it.

J

Let's start with a throwback.

People are so impatient. I saw someone the other day criticizing Odell Beckham Jrand Baker Mayfield for having chemistry problems. Can we give the guys a break, please? Beckham's only been there 2 1/2 years...

Please tell me Mike McCarthy was paid extra to wear this hoodie.

The Rams losing to Arizona felt like Cincinnati beating Notre Dame with the entire media in mourning after their darling took a drubbing.

Hate to see it.

Matt Maiocco reported Sunday when Ross Dwelley scored for San Francisco, it was the 49ers' twelfth touchdown scored by the team this year, and all twelve were scored by different players. That's pretty wild.

I'm going to just leave this one right here...

I could probably do a Random Shots just on the Patriots' sidelines...

Not sure if you heard, but Tom Brady went back to New England Sunday.

It was fine.

My new favorite NFL Rorschach Test is Mac Jones. It's fascinating to me how most people see exactly what they want to see in Jones. Lots of people, I'm one, saw an encouraging performance Sunday night in adverse weather with a nearly impossible narrative situation. Others see a Patriots team doomed to checkdown passes for the next five years. Most of those folks are happy about that so that's telling too. Oh well.

Rodney Harrison doesn't have to hold his own umbrella...

JF from the top rope.

That's funny.

Baltimore wide receiver Marquise Brown caught a long touchdown Sunday where the ball was put right on target.

Judging from the reaction on Twitter, this is apparently amazing.

When defensive linemen dream...

Bruh.

Jon Gruden was all of us.

Pretty much this...

Music Note of this week is a bonus as it's also a Movie Note.

Rushmore is one of my favorite movies of all time. And the ending is perfect. The song is "Ooh La La" from The Faces. If the voices and music sound familiar, it's because the band was Rod Stewart and Ronnie Woods. Drummer Kenny Jones would later join The Who. It's a timeless song for a timeless movie.

Hunter Renfrow: Footballguy.

I clearly don't understand the taunting rule.

Michael Rothstein shared this ridiculous stat: Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan threw 4 touchdowns and zero interceptions Sunday. And it was the fourth time he's lost a game with that stat line.

"Calf Injury" is to aging QBs on the way out as "stomachache" is to the middle schooler who doesn't want to do his homework. Kind of real. Kind of made up. But potentially effective.

Buckle Up. The Cowboys are good.

This defense went from a laughing stock to a legit strength. Hats off to Dan Quinn who has them playing fast and aggressive. Trevon Diggs is a legit star. Micah Parsons is the star we expected. Demarcus Lawrence will be back. This team is fun. I know it's cool to dismiss McCarthy as a bumbling clown but he fought for both Quinn and retaining offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. What do you know? Maybe some of the guys with Super Bowl rings might actually know what they're doing?

With the Cowboys haters and lovers, the league is more fun when they're rolling.

Here's the point we've reached with Patrick Mahomes II.

This produced the responses you'd expect:

"OMG!!!", "Insanity!", "ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME??????"

He tossed the ball seven yards underhanded.

This was a pass you "throw" to your 5-year-old.

And your five your old could throw it back the same way.

At some point, we've got to regain our senses. Patrick Mahomes II is one of the greatest athletes in the world and routinely does things that are legit mind-boggling. Tossing a ball 7 yards underhanded is not one of those things.

We all knew you could do it.

I'm no defensive coordinator. But I'd probably put a guy on Deebo Samuel.

Two cagey veterans going at it.

I usually think the "all or nothing" type stats like this are kind of contrived and lame. Like Brady beating 32 teams is that much more impressive than beating 31. But this is still sort of interesting.

And as my friend Keith Overton said, this is also how you make a Joe Montana fan mad...

I'm not much of a chocolate beer fan. But how has this collaboration of Pennsylvania legends taken this long?

That August hand wringing over Dak Prescott "not being right all year" (some of it by me) seems like a long time ago.

Wrapping with this one. Thank you so much for the avalanche of kind email last week. I missed my first Random Shots in some 15 plus years as I was recovering from COVID and trying to make it to my son's wedding last Saturday. I'm thrilled to say I did both. The wedding was super fun and couldn't have been better. And I'm feeling much better now and I'm on the road to being fully back. I feel fortunate to have been fully vaccinated as this was rough as it was. Be safe out there. And be thankful for what you have. You don't need me to tell you it's a fragile balance at times. And we owe it to ourselves and those close to us to give it our best shot.

Thank you for being with me on this goofy journey.

Love your neighbor and stick together.

Peace and Grace to you.

J
