DFS Roundtable: Wide Receiver Storylines Week 8

Chad Parsons's DFS Roundtable: Wide Receiver Storylines Week 8 Chad Parsons Published 10/24/2019

Which Wide Receiver Storylines Are The Most Lineup-Influencing for Week 8?

  • Corey Davis is back? Best matchup on the board with Tampa Bay. Or is A.J. Brown the sneaky GPP play?
  • DeAndre Hopkins: Still feels like he is simmering even with 9-106-1 in Week 7. Where are the big plays? Will Fuller out. Strong matchup against Oakland.
  • JuJu Smith-Schuster: Season-high game upcoming against hapless Miami? Smith-Schuster yet to surpass 85 yards in a game or log more than seven receptions.
  • Mike Evans, Tyreek Hill, Julio Jones, Odell Beckham, T.Y. Hilton all tough matchups: Are you staying away?

JASON WOOD

Corey Davis is back, indeed. Ryan Tannehill may not be much better than Marcus Mariota, but that won't matter against the Buccaneers. Davis is worth playing. As to A.J. Brown, I think as a GPP play for people who build a diverse set of lineups (multi-entry), he makes sense. But not as a core play.

  • DeAndre Hopkins: Still feels like he is simmering even with 9-106-1 in Week 7. Where are the big plays? Will Fuller out. Strong matchup against Oakland.
The Raiders just traded Gareon Conley for a 3rd round pick, which leaves the Raiders less ready to defend the Texans passing attack. Hopkins is always in play, although at his price I prefer Michael Thomas.

  • JuJu Smith-Schuster: Season-high game upcoming against hapless Miami? Smith-Schuster yet to surpass 85 yards in a game or log more than seven receptions.
The Steelers are justifiably big favorites against Miami, but it's hard to trust the offense without Ben Roethlisberger. I can see Smith-Schuster in a "get right" game, but I wouldn't invest in that outcome heavily.

T.Y. Hilton is in play, because the price is too attractive for his talents in spite of the matchup.

PHIL ALEXANDER

  • DeAndre Hopkins: There are more downfield targets to spread around in Will Fuller's absence, which is all Hopkins needs to be the best high-end wide receiver play on the board this week. A matchup against an Oakland secondary that has bled points to perimeter wide receivers is gravy.
  • Mike Evans, Tyreek Hill, Julio Jones, Odell Beckham, T.Y. Hilton: Jones and Hill have to be downgraded to their quarterback situations. Hilton is worth a few tournament shares, though his one-on-one matchup with Denver cornerback Chris Harris probably limits his upside. Beckham and Evans are a pair of elite receivers who are getting opportunities to convert on long plays downfield but aren't connecting with their usual frequency. With both coming off a bye, they're each solid speculative plays in the event their respective offenses used the time off to iron out some wrinkles.

JAMES BRIMACOMBE

Corey Davis – I loved Davis heading into Week 7 because of the change of scenery with Tannehill starting at quarterback. I think that can carry over to this week as well and he will continue to be a target of mine in DFS moving forward as he has a chance to put up some big fantasy numbers as long as he is seeing targets his way.

DeAndre Hopkins: I continue to buy Hopkins every week regardless of the outcome the week before. Now with Fuller out and with Hopkins having his best game of the season, I want to continue the trend and make sure he is in my lineups. He is a great pay up option this week and a perfect pair up with Watson to complete the stack.

DAN HINDERY

In terms of bang for your buck, it is hard to beat the Tennessee and Houston wide receivers this week.

The Will Fuller injury opens up serious value for the Texans. On DraftKings, Kenny Stills ($4,700) and Keke Coutee ($4,100) look like two of the better values on the slate. Stills will be the more popular option and looks like he should step straight into Fuller’s role in the offense. He put up over 100 receiving yards last week after Fuller left the game. Coutee should be much lower-owned, which makes him an interesting pivot off of Stills. I expect at least one of these two to have a big game against a bad Oakland secondary.

Tennessee’s passing offense looks rejuvenated with Ryan Tannehill at the helm and Tampa Bay has been a pass funnel defense, giving up very little on the ground but allowing big numbers through the air. In their last five games, the Buccaneers have allowed 70+ receiving yards to 10 different opposing wide receivers. Both Corey Davis ($4,400) and A.J. Brown ($4,100) could hit that mark this week. Not only has Tampa been allowing almost every receiver with a pulse to put up 70+ receiving yards, but they have also allowed some monster games, including 11-182-2 to Michael Thomas, 13-164-0 to Robert Woods, and 9-121-1 to Cooper Kupp.
