Staff Confidence Pool (No Spread) Week 17

Will Grant's Staff Confidence Pool (No Spread) Week 17 Will Grant Published 12/26/2014

We are proud to bring you the return of the Footballguys.com Staff Confidence Pool Challenge. 20 Staff members will pick the winner of each NFL game, and rank each choice from most confident (16 points) to least (1 point). As a tie-breaker, the person who is closest to the total points scored on the last Monday Night game will be the winner. Winners will be announced from week to week and the best overall record will be crowned Confidence pool Champion. Picks and ranks are due on Wednesday, so any late-breaking news may not be reflected in the choices. Also please note that no point spread is taken into account with these picks – it is a straight up pick of which NFL team will win this week. See the other confidence pools for picks against the spread (ATS) or Survivor / Eliminator style.

RESULTS FROM LAST WEEK

For the second week in a row, Wimer finished at the top of the weekly leaderboard. Although most of the staffers picked the Broncos to win on Monday night, even Larkin’s pick of the Bengals wasn’t enough to catch Wimer again. Wimer only missed four games this week and only lost a point on Buffalo’s loss to the Raiders. With only 96 points though, it was an weak overall for the entire board.

New Orleans, Baltimore, St. Louis, Buffalo and Denver all took big junks of potential points from the field this week.  Hicks and Tremblay took it the hardest, finishing with just 65 points each.

OVERALL RANKINGS

It’s getting pretty interesting at the top of the leaderboard. Miglio might be in 3rd place, but his 90 point finish this week has pulled him within striking distance of the top spot. Hindery only posted 79 points this week and Buzzard’s 82 narrowed Hindery’s lead to just 2 points. Only 9 points separate the top three spots, and all three really have a shot a victory given their picks this week.

HEAVY FAVORITES

For the final week of the season, since half the teams are just trying to get through the last week because their playoff hopes are lost, many of this week’s games are expected to be one sided. Houston, New Orleans, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Seattle, Green Bay and Denver are all strong favorites this week. Miami, Dallas, San Francisco and Atlanta are all strong favorites as well.

DUAL SUPPORT

Philadelphia and the Giants start the week off with a close contest. Philadelphia is a narrow favorite, but the Giants have their support as well. San Diego and Kansas City is also expected to be a close contest, but San Diego has a slight edge. Pittsburgh and Cincinnati is the toughest game to call this week though, with only 71 total confidence points wagered on the contest and the Steelers gaining a narrow edge for their home field advantage.

ODDS AND ENDS

It’s too close to call for the top three teams.  Here are the games that will probably decide the overall contest:

Staffer PHI JAX NYJ CHI BUF SD NO CLE IND DAL STL ARI DET OAK CAR CIN MNF

  5 16 10 9 11 6 8 13 12 4 15 7 3 14 2 1

Hindery has risked a lot this week, taking Buffalo, San Diego, Tennessee and Washington while Buzzard and Miglio took the Patriots, Chiefs, Colts and Cowboys.  Miglio’s risked big points on the Colts and Patriots as well, so if those games go his way, he’s going to gain a ton of ground on Hindery for the overall victory.

Miglio only risked 3 points on the Packers as well, meaning he’ll probably be pulling for the Lions to win, even though he picked the Packers to win.

Hard to believe that with over 500 games this season, the overall leaderboard winner will probably be decided by just four games in the final week.

Good luck this weekend!
