FanDuel's Sunday Million Week 4 Recap

James Brimacombe's FanDuel's Sunday Million Week 4 Recap James Brimacombe Published 10/06/2015

FanDuel was back at it again with their massive Week 4 Sunday Million contest, requiring a $25 entry fee with 55,300 people getting paid out. This massive $5 million GPP tournament had 275,862 entries available for buy-in and ended up only having 230,966 entries in it. There was $1,122,400 worth of overlay in the tournament and it offered some nice rake free playing for those that got to enter.  Every week FanDuel will be running a Sunday Million GPP Contest and we will break it down here at Footballguys.com and see what the keys were to having the top lineup on the week and taking home the top prize of $1 million.

Here's how Week 4 of the Sunday Million shook out.

DFS Screen Name Points Prize Money
1st brettrau24 176.12 $1,000,000
2nd mcmagin 174.62 $350,000
3rd rootdown2 168.02 $150,000
4th stratas 167.92 $100,000
5th hussflier 167.22 $75,000

This week was the closest finish yet at the top with brettrau24 only edging out mcmagin by 1.5 FanDuel points (176.12 to 174.62). With a contest that has 230,966 entries taking it down is a very impressive feat and on a low scoring week such as Week 4, 176.12 is a very impressive score.  Brettrau24 had to really have a unique lineup with some highly under owned players in it as well as a lineup that was balanced with some studs who ended up hitting it big. Let's take a look at his lineup and what percentage made up his team.

Brettrau24's team was built around a couple of stacks with QB Philip Rivers at only 3.5% owned and at a modest price of $7,400 he was stacked with WR Keenan Allen who was 10.4 % owned and the combo combined for 41.42 FanDuel points. The other stack that is not very common is taking a teams kicker and pairing them up with the teams defense. This was the case here as he took both Graham Gano and Carolina's defense and got a combined 31.0  points out of the duo. Gano was only 3.3% owned and the Panthers defense was also over looked as they were only owned by 9.1% of the field.

Three players that were keys to some big winners last week were Devonta Freeman, DeAndre Hopkins and Keenan Allen and it so happened that brettrau24 had all three rostered this week as well and they all paid off their salaries and more for the second week in a row. Devona Freeman's three touchdowns resulted in the highest scoring player on FanDuel for the week with 35.40 points and he was 12.5% owned. Hopkins scored 20.20 points and was 12.9% owned. The highest ownership player on the winning lineup was Karlos Williams who was the chalk play of the week for $6,300 and was owned by 42.1% of the Sunday Million lineups. His low salary helped you spend up at the WR position and build a solid lineup all around.

His second highest owned player was value TE Martellus Bennett at only $5,500 and he delivered 19.80 points at a 14.5% ownership rate. Looking back at the past Sunday Million winners this is the first time that the winner has used the entire $60,000 salary cap and only had two players under 9% owned. It goes to show you that you can construct a roster millions of different ways and all that really matters is selecting the right combinations of players to really win big.

Position Player Salary FanDuel Points % Owned
QB Philip Rivers $7,400  26.22 3.5%
RB Karlos Williams $6,300 14.50   42.1%
RB Devonta Freeman $7,200 35.40  12.5%
WR DeAndre Hopkins $7,900 20.20  12.9%
WR Keenan Allen $7,700 15.20  10.4%
WR Demaryius Thomas $8,500 13.80  9.0%
TE Martellus Bennett $5,500  19.80  14.5%
K Graham Gano $4,700  13.00 3.3%
D Carolina Panthers $4,800  18.00  9.1%
    $60,000  176.12

Going through the top 10 teams in Week 3 of the Sunday Million one trend stood out as you needed to have either Philip Rivers or Devonta Freeman as each of the top 7 teams had both players rostered. Freeman was the top pick of the week from the top ten players as he was on 9 out of the 10 teams. The chalk play of the week was Karlos Williams and he found his way on to two of the top ten teams.  Jamaal Charles, Mark Ingram, Matt Forte, Frank Gore, Eddie Lacy and Adrian Peterson were the other running backs that cracked rosters with only Charles and Peterson being used more than once.

Hopkins was the top selection at WR as he was rostered by 7 teams and Jeremy Maclin was the next in line on 5 teams. Keenan Allen was a popular choice as he was on 4 rosters, Larry Fitzgerald continues to find his way into Sunday Million winning rosters each week and was back again this week with 2 entries in the top 4. A.J. Green was also rostered on 3 teams despite not having a huge week like last week.

Martellus Bennett was the go to TE selection at $5,500 as collected 19.80 points and was on 5 out of the 10 top rosters. Clay was the next most popular as he was on 3 rosters and Jordan Reed and Travis Kelce made up the last two entries. Kicker was all over the board this week as only Gano and Santos were each rostered twice and then there was 6 other kickers that found their way into the top 10 teams. At defense it was the Carolina Panthers who were on 6 out of the 10 teams and the Falcons and Seahawks each on two a peice.
