Footballguys Staff Mock Draft 10, 12 team Standard Format

On August 17th, the Footballguys staff completed a 12-team standard mock draft where touchdown passes are 6 points. No Flex. Below are the league's scoring format and bylaws. Summary and Evaluation provided by John Mamula.

Starting with Ryan Hester from the 1.01 spot, we will go over each person's selections in the mock draft.

RYAN HESTER - SLOT 1

Overall Strategy: QB early

Best Pick(s): Kelvin Benjamin, 5.1 (WR24) – Ryan made sure to draft a WR2 at the 4-5 turn. Kelvin Benjamin is solid value at this spot in standard leagues and has a nose for the end zone. Benjamin should once again produce 1000 receiving yards with 7-9 touchdowns this season.

Worst Pick(s): Duke Johnson, 9.1 (RB43) – In a non-ppr league where you can only start 2 RBs, Duke Johnson is a wasted pick at this point of the draft. Johnson will not crack Ryan’s starting lineup without help in the form of multiple injuries. Ryan would have been better served to draft a TE, such as Delanie Walker or Zach Ertz.

Evaluation: Ryan scooped up Tom Brady on the 2-3 turn as he is a solid value at this spot in a 6 point/passing TD league. He handcuffed LeVeon Bell with James Conner in the 13th round and is strong at the RB and WR position. Ryan waited too long to address the TE position. If Coby Fleener outperforms his projections, this team will be in the top tier.

Chad Parsons - slot 2

Overall Strategy: RB Heavy and wait on QB and WR

Best Pick(s): Jordan Reed, 7.2 (TE5) – Every player has value at some point of the draft. Jordan Reed dropped due to injury concerns. However, Reed is a solid value at this point of the draft. In a shrewd move, Chad handcuffed Reed with Vernon Davis in the 17th round as injury insurance.

Worst Pick(s): Joe Mixon, 3.2 (RB14) – After drafting RBs with the first two picks, Chad needed to address another position in the third round. In a league where you can only start 2 RBs, you are setting yourself up for failure by going extra heavy with RB early.

Evaluation: Too many RBs early! Chad drafted 4 RBs in the first 5 rounds. Perhaps Chad did not realize that you can only start 2 RBs in this league. Reviewing starting roster construction is a critical part of your draft process. Larry Fitzgerald, Julian Edelman, and Pierre Garcon are all better WR in PPR leagues. By waiting on WR and QB, Chad’s starting lineup will be weaker most weeks and thus likely to struggle.

Daniel Simpkins - Slot 3

Overall Strategy: Wait on QB

Best Pick(s): Russell Wilson, 7.3, (QB7) – Daniel was rewarded by waiting on QB. Tremendous value landing Russell Wilson and pairing him with Jimmy Graham.

Worst Pick(s): Martavis Bryant, 4.10, (WR22) – Daniel reached for Martavis Bryant, who currently has an ADP of WR29, in the fourth round. If Daniel did not draft Antonio Brown, this pick would make more sense. There is only one ball to go around on offense in Pittsburgh.

Evaluation: Daniel is heavily invested in the Steelers and Seahawks passing games. Thus, on a week where those offenses struggle, Daniel’s starting lineup is likely to struggle. This creates a boom/bust nature which can be high variance in standard H2H leagues.

Jeff Haseley - Slot 4

Overall Strategy: WR Heavy Early, Wait on QB

Best Pick(s): Greg Olsen, 5.4, (TE3) – Greg Olsen is the model of consistency with at least 1000 receiving yards in each of the past three seasons. Expect his TD numbers to bounce back to the 6-7 range this season. Solid value at this point of the draft.

Worst Pick(s): Jamaal Williams, 9.4, (RB44) – Jeff needed to address the QB position at this point of the draft. He had already drafted 3 RBs and did not need another RB before drafting a QB. Marcus Mariota, Philip Rivers, and Kirk Cousins were all available and could have rounded out his WR heavy team.

Evaluation: Jeff has one of the strongest WR cores in the league but he waited too long to draft a QB. Dak Prescott and Carson Palmer are better QB2s rather than starting QBs. Jeff has a wildcard in his pocket with Deshaun Watson. If he gets on the field and plays up to his potential during his rookie season, Jeff’s team can make some noise.

Justin Howe - Slot 5

Overall Strategy: QB early and wait on TE

Best Pick(s): Zach Ertz, 10.8 (TE9) – Waiting on TE worked out well for Justin as he landed Zach Ertz in the 10th round. Ertz is all upside at this point of the draft. Ertz could vault up into the top 5 at the TE position with increased targets due to Jordan Matthews being traded to Buffalo.

Worst Pick(s): Paul Perkins, 7.5 (RB35) – After drafting two consecutive RBs, Justin needed to go back to the WR or TE position. Davante Parker, Jamison Crowder, and Tyler Eifert were available and would have fit perfectly with his roster.

Evaluation: By drafting Aaron Rodgers in the 2nd round, Justin’s team will need some luck at the RB2 and WR position. He drafted a RB in three consecutive rounds (Tevin Coleman Round 5, Frank Gore Round 6, Paul Perkins Round 7). He can rotate these RBs and hope one of them breaks out. Justin waited to build depth at the WR position but has upside with Jeremy Maclin, Tyler Lockett, and Zay Jones. The verdict is not out yet with this team.

Dan Hindery - Slot 6

Overall Strategy: TE early and wait on QB

Best Pick(s): Cam Newton, 8.7 (QB10) – Dan struck gold by waiting on QB with Cam Newton, who is one season removed from his dominant 2015 campaign with 45 total TDs.

Worst Pick(s): Justin Tucker, 17.6, (K1) – Dan was the first owner to draft a kicker in the 17th round. He could have held off 1-2 more rounds and continued to build depth at other positions.

Evaluation: Dan’s strategy of waiting on QB worked out perfectly. Not only did he get value with Cam Newton, but he backed him up with Kirk Cousins. Dan will need some luck at RB2 with Ameer Abdullah and Adrian Peterson as his projected starter. If he can get consistent production out of his RB2, Dan’s team has a chance at the league championship.

Jeff Tefertiller - Slot 7

Overall Strategy: QB early and wait on TE

Best Pick(s): Carlos Hyde, 4.6, (RB19) – Most reports are that Carlos Hyde is having an outstanding training camp and will be the bell-cow RB in the 49ers offense. He makes for a solid RB2 in the 4th or 5th round.

Worst Pick(s): Mike Gillislee, 5.7, (RB24) – After drafting 2 RBs within the first four rounds, Jeff did not need to go back to the RB position yet. Stefon Diggs and Jarvis Landry were available and would have been a better fit for his roster construction.

Evaluation: Too many RBs and not enough WR depth. During the first 8 rounds, Jeff drafted 5 RBs and only 2 WRs. This will hurt his weekly starting lineup as he can only start 2 RBs. He will also need some luck at the TE position as he drafted Jack Doyle and Austin Hooper, who are both better TE2 rather than TE1s.

Scott Bischoff - Slot 8

Overall Strategy: WR heavy and wait on QB and TE

Best Pick(s): Delanie Walker, 9.8, (TE8) – Scott’s patience was rewarded when Delanie Walker dropped to him in the 9th round. Walker has been one of the most consistent TEs over the past three seasons with at least 800 yards during each season.

Worst Pick(s): Danny Woodhead, 7.8, (RB37) – Danny Woodhead is much better in a PPR format as he excels with the receiving game. In a standard league where you only start 2 RBs, Woodhead loses his luster.

Evaluation: Love, Love, Love Scott’s team! He has one of the strongest WR cores in the league and if he can get above average production from the RB position, he will be one of the favorites to win the championship. Waiting on QB and TE worked out perfectly as he nailed value with Derek Carr and Delanie Walker.

Alex Miglio - Slot 9

Overall Strategy: Wait for the value at each position

Best Pick(s): Tyler Eifert, 8.4 (TE7) – Alex waited to draft a TE as he was solidifying his RB and WR positions. Tyler Eifert was a godsend that fell to Alex in the 8th round. When healthy, Eifert is a focal point of the Bengals passing game with 18 touchdowns over his past 21 games.

Worst Pick(s): Darren McFadden, 7.9 (RB38) – Alex was aggressive drafting McFadden in the 7th round. Perhaps he wanted to ensure that Justin did not claim him on the 7-8 turn. There has been speculation that Dallas may utilize a two or three-headed RBBC while Ezekiel Elliott is suspended. When Elliott returns, McFadden will be regulated to Alex’s bench or maybe even the waiver wire.

Evaluation: Alex did a fabulous job letting the value in the draft come to him. He drafted solid playmakers at every position on his team. If Andrew Luck and Tyler Eifert are healthy and play to their potential, Alex will have one of the top 3 teams in the league.

Keith Roberts - Slot 10

Overall Strategy: TE and QB early

Best Pick(s): Corey Davis, 11.10 (WR54) – It is a wise strategy to target high-upside players at your backup skill positions. This is exactly what Keith did by drafting Corey Davis in the 11th round. Keith has the luxury of taking a wait-and-see approach with Davis before inserting him into his starting lineup at WR3.

Worst Pick(s): Matt Ryan, 5.10 (QB5) – Keith addressed the QB position too early in this draft. After drafting Travis Kelce in the 4th round, Keith needed to consider the RB or WR position in the 5th round. Ryan had a career season in 2015 with 4944 passing yards and 38 TDs. He is a likely candidate to regress this season.

Evaluation: Keith was aggressive drafting Travis Kelce in the 4th round and Matt Ryan in the 5th round. This left him weak at RB2 with Eddie Lacy, Samaje Perine, and Matt Forte as his top options. All three of these RBs are better backups than having to rely on as starters. It’s difficult to build out a high-end roster when you draft both a TE and QB within the first five rounds.

James Brimacombe - Slot 11

Overall Strategy: Wait on Tight end and focus on other positions

Best Pick(s): Demaryius Thomas, 4.2 (WR16) – All reports are that Demaryius Thomas is healthy after dealing with a hip injury most of last season. Thomas is a solid value anywhere after the middle of the third round.

Worst Pick(s): Kareem Hunt, 9.11 (RB46) – Rather than continuing to build RB depth, James should have drafted a TE at this point of the draft. Zach Ertz was available as would have made a better pick at this spot.

Evaluation: After seven RBs came off the board in the first round, James did not hesitate to draft DeMarco Murray with his first pick. He built a strong roster at the RB and WR positions over the first half of the draft. James was aggressive drafting Jameis Winston QB6 in the 5th round. He paired Winston with Marcus Mariota in the 10th round to form a formidable QB stable. The only weakness is at the TE position. If Eric Ebron breaks out with a career season, James will be one of the top teams in the league.

Justin Bonnema - Slot 12

Overall Strategy: RB early and wait on QB and TE

Best Pick(s): Ben Roethlisberger, 8.1, (QB8) Justin made sure to draft a QB at the 7-8 turn without taking a chance at a run at the position before the draft wrapped back around to him. Roethlisberger is a high-upside pick with the potential for a career season if his offensive weapons stay healthy.

Worst Pick(s): Ezekiel Elliott, 1.12 (RB9) Drafting Elliott at the end of the first round is a bold move. It’s a heavy investment for a player that is currently slated to miss six games. Justin will have to rely on Bilal Powell at RB2 until Elliott returns. While everyone else was zigging with RBs early in the draft, he should have zagged and attacked another position at the 1-2 turn.

Evaluation: Ezekiel Elliott is the key to this team. Most prefer to hold off until at least the middle of the second round before rolling the dice on Elliott. If the suspension is reduced, this team has a chance to make some noise. Justin also did not backup his starting QB, Ben Roethlisberger, who usually misses a couple of games every season.
