Fantasy Football Impact for Terrance Ferguson on the Los Angeles Rams
Terrance Ferguson is big, fast, and athletic. At 6-feet-5 and 247 pounds, Ferguson is among the tallest and heaviest tight ends in this class. He ran the 40-yard dash at the Combine in 4.63 seconds, fastest among tight ends. His vertical leap of 39 inches was the highest among tight ends, while his broad jump of 10 feet, 2 inches was the third highest among tight ends.
Ferguson tallied 134 receptions for 1,537 yards and 16 touchdowns in 53 games during his four seasons at Oregon. According to PFF, he averaged 9.0 yards after the catch last season, ranking second among tight ends in this draft class and fifth among all college tight ends. However, his average depth of target of 7.8 yards ranked 76th among tight ends, and his 37 deep yards ranked 90th. He excels when asked to run in straight lines and make catches near the line of scrimmage. Our Matt Waldman compares him to Mike Gesicki in his Rookie Scouting Report, but he notes that Gesicki "catches the ball with strong technique, and Ferguson has a penchant for clap-attacking targets." He had four drops on 65 targets in his last season at Oregon.
As a situational passing threat, Ferguson can exploit mismatches against soft zones and rumble for first downs after the catch. His limitations as a receiver and a run blocker will limit his snaps, and thus his fantasy production, unless he fixes his techniques.
The biggest drag on Ferguson's fantasy value may be the team that drafted him. Last season, the Rams targeted their tight ends just 83 times, resulting in 51 receptions for 459 yards and three touchdowns, according to Stathead data. If all those stats belonged to one player, he would have ranked 21st among tight ends in point-per-reception (PPR) scoring. Colby Parkinson, the team's top tight end, ended the season as the WR38.
Only four teams targeted their tight ends less often than the Rams, and only two teams' tight ends had fewer receptions. Only Denver's tight ends had fewer receiving yards as a unit, while just four teams' tight ends scored fewer receiving touchdowns. Since Sean McVay started calling plays in 2017, the Rams' tight ends have averaged 105 targets, 71 receptions, 737 yards, and 4 touchdowns a season. The ceiling for Ferguson will be low absent a wholesale change in offensive approach.
Fantasy Football Fallout
Ferguson's presence on the field kneecaps whatever value Tyler Higbee and Colby Parkinson might have had for fantasy. Our Footballguys projections have Ferguson with 34 receptions and 323 receiving yards, both slightly below Higbee's projections but ahead of Parkinson's. Higbee and Ferguson are projected to be TE31 and TE34, respectively. Neither is a fantasy starter. Even a more concerted effort by McVay to get the ball to his tight ends likely does not elevate either into TE2 consideration.
Absent such an emphasis on tight end receptions, Ferguson should have no impact on the fantasy production of the other offensive skill players on the team.

Overview
The Los Angeles Rams drafted Oregon tight end Terrance Ferguson with their second-round pick. He will compete with incumbents Tyler Higbee and Colby Parkinson for playing time in an offense that does not prioritize getting the ball to its tight ends. None of them are startable in fantasy, though Ferguson could be a productive dynasty asset in a few seasons.
