Updates from Week 4

Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks

It wasn't exactly a breakneck race, but it does appear Spencer Rattler has ever-so-slightly outperformed Tyler Shough for the starting job. Rattler got the starting deference in the finale, leading three drives that resulted in just a long field goal for the offense. Shough then stepped in and impressed, albeit against backups of backups. The rookie lost a fumble but also led a 77-yard drive that he capped off with a touchdown scramble. In the preseason, Rattler showed slightly more consistency and performed better against stronger competition. Of course, neither would have much of a leash; it would be fair to project multiple starts for both in 2025. And that's not leading to much optimism among those following the team. "If the preseason sample size is any indication of what's to come from Shough or Rattler or (gasp) Jake Haener," figures CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin. "Well, the safest bet is that New Orleans will be squarely back in the quarterback market come six months from now."

Preseason Updates: Running Backs

The Saints' backfield behind bellcow Alvin Kamara now looks much clearer, with Kendre Miller firmly in the No. 2 spot. After Kamara left the preseason finale with just one snap played, Miller saw 11 of the 16 first-team snaps and acquitted himself well on 3 rushes. "Kendre has just had a really steady entire offseason," Moore said after the Denver game. "I thought he's done a phenomenal job. Training camp, he's been really consistent week-in and week-out. In these games, I've thought he's run really hard. He's a physical player. We like what we have seen." Miller would love to put an injury-plagued NFL start behind him, and Moore has raved about the youngster's work ethic and commitment to availability. On Saturday, the other five first-team snaps went to Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and it's hard to gauge what that means. He could be locked into the No. 3 role, but he seems like a more likely cut candidate. The ex-Chief won't contribute much if anything on special teams, while Velus Jones Jr has looked dynamic in both phases, and rookie Devin Neal bounced back from injury Saturday night. Neal was given seven touches and should be somewhere in the team's 2025 plans. For his part, Jones had another impressive kickoff return in the finale, a 39-yarder in the first quarter.
