Footballguys Staff's Preseason Updates: Los Angeles Chargers Footballguys Staff Published 08/25/2025

One of the best and most comprehensive features we offer every year is our Footballguys Preseason Updates. Every week this month, Bob Henry, Jason Wood, Clayton Gray, and their team of Footballguys Staffers cover every player that matters from every NFL team. It's 32-plus pages of some of the most comprehensive coverage you'll find. It's probably worth the Footballguys Premium Subscription by itself.

Updates from Week 4

The Athletic's Daniel Popper provided the final 53-man roster projection of the year. ESPN's Kris Rhim provided his, with no differences in the fantasy-relevant positions. After Quentin Johnston's concussion against the Rams, the Chargers opted to sit most every regular contributor to close the preseason against San Francisco. Guard Mekhi Becton returned to individual drills for the first time since July 28th. Becton's availability for Week 1 remains a question.

Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks

The quarterbacks are Justin Herbert and Trey Lance. Herbert's biggest news story revolved around his potential relationship with pop star Madison Beer. Herbert is ready to go for the season. Taylor Heinicke is not expected to stick, even if he survives the 53-man cut. The Falcons held Heinicke through the 53-man cut and received a 7th-round pick from the Chargers in 2024. With multiple backup quarterback situations in flux around the NFL, the Chargers could look to recoup that lost pick.

Preseason Updates: Running Backs

Omarion Hampton has lived up to every expectation as a first-round pick. Chargers.com's Eric Smith noted Hampton shined during the week of practice. GM Joe Hortiz expressed optimism that Najee Harris will be ready for Week 1: "he's on track, and I think he should be able to go, hopefully in Week 1." Harbaugh has avoided anything concrete. Harbaugh on Harris: "When Najee is ready to play, Najee will be ready to play. Right now, to take it past today would be going over the legal limit. That would take you over the legal limit of what-ifs." Popper projects that Hassan Haskins would be the next back up behind Hampton if Harris is not ready, based on practice participation. Harbaugh's relationship with Haskins dates back to 2017. Harbaugh: "You need a good run, Hassan is right there ready, willing, and able to give it to you." While Kimani Vidal has served on the first team punt unit, Raheim Sanders has been the better running back. Harris's status will affect this room. The feeling is that Sanders is too valuable to survive being exposed to waivers. The decision here could be a tip on where Harris is tracking to Week 1. It would be a surprise to see five backs unless Harris is on the NFI list. Vidal missed the final preseason game and the last three days of practice. Popper suggests he could be on IR with a "return" designation.
