Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
Head coach Shane Steichen announced on Tuesday that Daniel Jones will be the starting quarterback for the regular season. “He's the starting quarterback for the season; I don't want to have a short leash on that." While the battle was neck and neck throughout the start of camp, Steichen said consistency was the difference. “You guys heard me talk about the consistency. That's really what I was looking for… I think Daniel did a great job doing that, and I think A.R. has made strides in that area, but I do feel that he still needs to continue to develop in those areas.” This decision has sparked speculation about Richardson's future in Indianapolis. When asked about this, Richardson was very candid with reporters, “I just gotta trust in the Lord, and I gotta be where I am right now. And right now, I’m an Indianapolis Colt.” In the Indianapolis Colts’ preseason finale on Saturday, head coach Shane Steichen opted to rest both top quarterbacks, Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson Sr.. This decision allowed rookie Riley Leonard to take center stage, and he delivered a standout performance, completing 15 of 20 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown. Jason Bean provided relief, throwing for 107 yards with a touchdown but also tossing an interception. Leonard’s impressive showing in the 23-17 loss to the Bengals highlighted his potential as a developmental quarterback.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
The Indianapolis Colts’ running back unit maintained its steady course during the week leading up to Saturday’s preseason finale against the Cincinnati Bengals, with star Jonathan Taylor sitting out the game as a precaution. In his absence, D.J. Giddens stepped up with increased carries, rushing six times for 22 yards in the 23-17 loss. However, rookie Ulysses Bentley IV stole the show, delivering a standout performance with eight carries for 32 yards and two touchdowns. Nate Noel led the team’s ground attack, churning out a game-high 63 yards. The performances from Bentley and Noel have made the decision for the team’s third-string battle more difficult for the Colts coaches.
