Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks

Head coach Dan Campbell was excited to see how his offense looked against a top-flight defense when the Lions and Texans participated in joint practices this week. After a solid showing last week against the Dolphins, Jared Goff was at it again against the Texans. Goff threw touchdowns to Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown during the red zone period, then hit Kalif Raymond for a touchdown in the back of the end zone to end the team period. Goff also threw an interception and was the victim of a couple of drops, but overall, the quarterback looks ready for the season. Goff has a couple of fans in his running backs. Gibbs and David Montgomery recently sat down with The Pivot podcast crew and discussed what Goff means to the team. Campbell all but named Kyle Allen the team's backup quarterback after the final preseason game against the Texans. After a tough start in the Hall of Fame Game, Allen has responded by going 26 for 30 for 310 yards and five touchdowns against zero interceptions over the past three. The Lions will now have to decide whether to keep three quarterbacks, try to sneak Hooker onto the practice squad, or see if a trade market develops. Hooker improved each game, but it wasn't enough to save his backup job.

Preseason Updates: Running Backs

The full Pivot interview with Montgomery and Gibbs is worth watching. Both players have fought through adversity to get where they are, and both talk about how it has fueled their journeys. While Gibbs proved last year that he can carry the load, he is happy to continue sharing carries with Montgomery. "I'm worried more about winning Super Bowls, I ain't going to lie," Gibbs said. "So, whatever that looks like, I could have 100 less, 50 less. I really just want to win because I haven't won like a state championship, a national championship. So, I really just want to win a Bowl." Montgomery believes Gibbs could soon be the best back in the NFL, if he isn't already. Gibbs said the most significant difference for the run game headed into 2025 is the re-fortified offensive line, while Sports Illustrated's Matt Verderame thinks Gibbs is headed for All-Pro status no matter who is blocking in front of him.
