There may not be a more overused term in fantasy football than "sleeper".

(Says the dude who put it right in the title and everything.)

Every year, there are hundreds (if not thousands) of articles highlighting potential fantasy football "sleepers"—under-the-radar players with the potential to blast by their modest asking prices on draft day. The problem is that many of these articles highlight the same guys.

If 800 people call the same running back a sleeper, he's not asleep anymore. Ol' boy is fully awake.

However, this isn't to say that all the sleeper talk has no value. Sure, big names like Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson may drive the conversation in draft season, but it's the mid-round and late-round values that win leagues.

With the 2025 NFL Draft still to come, there's much that could change between now and the summer. And it's still too early to have much in the way of ADP information. But each player in this column slots outside the top 25 at their respective positions in Footballguys' early rankings.

And each has the potential to exceed their modest fantasy price tag in a major way.

QB Sam Darnold, Seattle Seahawks

Darnold was one of the biggest winners of free agency this year from a financial perspective—no offensive player who switched teams received a larger contract than the 27-year-old, who replaced Geno Smith in Seattle. While speaking to reporters, Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald said that he believes Darnold's huge 2024 season was no fluke, and that the former third overall pick can get the Seahawks into the Super Bowl.

"We have to create an environment where we get the best version of Sam," he said. "It's on tape what he can do. The wins, the teammate (he is), the work ethic, but we have to create something where he's going to work every day, he's confident, we're doing the things he does really well, building the squad around him, playing complementary football on the other two phases, then let him do his thing."

Is Darnold going to once again rank fifth in the league in passing yards and touchdown passes and seventh in fantasy points among quarterbacks? But Geno Smith was 12th in fantasy points at the position a year ago and was a top-five fantasy quarterback in 2022. Even with Cooper Kupp replacing DK Metcalf at wide receiver in the Emerald City, Darnold is undervalued.

RB Javonte Williams, Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys got a 1,000-yard rushing season last year out of Rico Dowdle, but Dowdle is gone now after joining the Carolina Panthers in free agency. The Cowboys replaced Dowdle with a combination of Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders. While those signings haven't inspired much enthusiasm from fantasy managers, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer told reporters he's excited about what the 24-year-old brings to his second team—and unconcerned about Williams' injury history.

"I didn't really see anything that said that, ‘Oh, the injury was an issue,'" Schottenheimer said. "Usually, it does take guys a little bit of time coming off the ACL, but I can't compare that. I just know the film that we saw that he played really good snaps, some really good suddenness in and out of holes and accelerating into open areas. So again, I think we really feel good about (him). The hunger that (Williams) has coming back off the injury. Some of the best players I've ever been around are guys that have chips on their shoulders, and Javonte's one of those guys."

Williams wasn't especially impressive last year with the Broncos—513 rushing yards and 3.7 yards per carry. But Williams eclipsed 1,200 total yards as a rookie in 2021, and the Cowboys actually gave Williams more money than Dowdle got to join the Panthers, and the latter was quietly a fantasy RB2 in Big D a year ago.

WR Joshua Palmer, Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills had one of the most explosive offenses in the league last year, and the team did so without a wide receiver who had even 850 yards. To improve those receivers, the Bills signed Palmer to a three-year, $29 million contract, and Greg Cosell of NFL Films told One Bills Live that he thinks Buffalo may have hit the jackpot with the 25-year-old.

"Maybe he just needed a change of scenery. I don't know the answer. I'm not gonna sit here and say he's gonna catch 90 balls for 1,400 yards. Who knows? But this guy has traits," said Cosell. I loved Joshua Palmer coming out of Tennessee. I thought he could be a really, really good NFL receiver I remember when they played Alabama when he was at Tennessee, and he ran by [All-Pro cornerback] Patrick Surtain II, twice. He has vertical speed," said Cosell. "Without being there [in Los Angeles], I can't speak to the reasons why it hasn't happened, but you're dealing with a guy that has a lot of traits, and he does have vertical ability."

To be fair, Palmer has never had an 800-yard season. It's still entirely possible that Buffalo could add a wideout in the 2025 NFL Draft. And Palmer is exactly the sort of "sleeper" that becomes so popular the value he has in drafts gets vacuumed out. But the potential No. 1 wideout for a Super Bowl contender currently sits outside the top 75 at his position. He's significantly undervalued in that spot.

TE Tyler Conklin, Los Angeles Chargers

To be fair, there wasn't a lot in the way of fantasy-relevant tight ends who switched teams in free agency outside Evan Engram moving from the Jacksonville Jaguars to the Denver Broncos. But while addressing the media, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh lauded the signing of veteran tight end Tyler Conklin to a one-year, $3 million contract.

"When you track Tyler Conklin, that's a great team player, very talented player, highly-productive player. I met him probably three or four times, the enthusiasm comes out," Harbaugh said. "Once we met with him and was around him it was like, 'We got to have this guy.' This is our kind of guy. Competitors welcome, excited about Tyler Conklin and how our tight end room has developed."

The 29-year-old Conklin is admittedly joining a Chargers team with a tight end in Will Dissly coming off a career year. But Conklin eclipsed 70 targets and set a season-high with four touchdowns with the New York Jets in 2024. If Conklin can surpass Dissly as the Chargers' top tight end and/or an injury strikes, Conklin could, at the very least, be a solid depth piece or bye-week fill-in.

Try to contain your enthusiasm. Decorum, people. Decorum.
