Welcome to the dynasty trading post, where optimizing strategy, roster construction, format, and player value oscillations are examined weekly with examples and completed dynasty trades.

This week, we'll focus on the quarterback position for contending and pretending (aka teams not contending) dynasty teams.

All trades are Superflex unless stated otherwise

Contending Teams

QB Dak Prescott, Dallas

Dak Prescott is undervalued again in dynasty. The market has Prescott in the QB10-15 range despite his established productive profile and only being in his early 30s. Prescott is QB9 in PPG through five weeks, and signs point to Prescott being among the league leaders in pass attempts. Dallas' defense is leaky (and injured), and their run game is among the worst in the NFL. Prescott is an ideal QB2 for a contending team, plus provides a runway of many years. Expect to see Prescott mentioned annually as a value play as he is unlikely to crash the top 10 dynasty quarterbacks in market value again considering his age and the market's proclivity to boost younger flash profiles and potential.

Giving a 1st+ is perfectly reasonable for Prescott. While many would scoff at giving Caleb Williams for Prescott, a reminder the average 1.01-drafted quarterback finishes as QB24 in their first season. Williams currently sits as QB23 in PPG and largely irrelevant for Superflex leagues.

QB Geno Smith, Seattle

Geno Smith is the discount Dak Prescott, an undervalued veteran profile to aid contending teams in their QB2 lineup spot. Smith is QB10 in PPG, stocked with quality weapons around him, and Smith has yet to throw multiple touchdowns in a game this season, pointing to an even higher ceiling.

The ideal price is Smith for a 2nd or 2nd+ as a contending team buying from a non-contending team. The first deal with Mike Evans is palatable if offering a 1st. Smith is likely very accessible if on a team falling out of the playoff race if offers picks or a combination of a pick (likely Round 2) and a young player.

Pretending Teams

QB Patrick Mahomes II, Kansas City

How crazy is it that Patrick Mahomes II is a target for a non-contending team? Mahomes has sagged to QB5 by the dynasty market and has been a tepid producer this season. That said, Mahomes is still the most durable dynasty asset on the planet when projecting the rest of his career. Mahomes listed for pretending teams is mostly due to his QB2-level production and losing Rashee Rice for the season and Isiah Pacheco for a few more weeks. Mahomes is likely a stronger fantasy producer in 2025 than here in 2024.

QB Drake Maye, New England

Drake Maye was announced as the Week 6 starter for the Patriots, making the painful era of Jacoby Brissett over. This is the key week to acquire Maye, as any flash will be greeted with a rise in value and inaccessibility in the dynasty trading market. Maye's power arm and mobility offer promise to overcome New England's struggling offensive line and even allow Ja'Lynn Polk and others to pop in the passing game. Maye was commonly available in the mid-late first round of rookie drafts and could be on a contender looking to turn Maye (or someone like Michael Penix Jr.) into contending production in the coming weeks.
