As we race toward August, Footballguys.com will look at one team per weekday with our quick-hitting Team Busts feature, where we check out the players we think will disappoint this year.
Go Deeper: See in-depth projections for every Texans player here >>>
This is a weekday series that will stretch through July 30. If you like this and want another, come back the next workday. Another will be here.
Busts We Are Avoiding on the Texans
We asked the Footballguys staff to identify a player they're uncomfortable drafting at their current price.
- WR Stefon Diggs - 7 votes
- S Jalen Pitre - 1 vote
- TE Dalton Schultz - 1 vote
- QB C.J. Stroud - 1 vote
- No One - 1 vote
Reasons Stefon Diggs Could Be a Bust
- Ben Cummins: Diggs is changing teams, will turn 31 during the season, and now has to compete for targets with entrenched young stars in Nico Collins and Tank Dell.
- Julia Papworth: Diggs heads to a new team, where he will compete for targets with Nico Collins, Tank Dell, Joe Mixon, and others. I can’t draft Diggs in the third round with that kind of uncertainty.
- Ryan Weisse: It's hard to draft any receiver in a true three-competition for targets as early as Diggs is going. His upside is severely capped.
- Bob Harris: Much of Diggs' past success has been volume-based. Can he hit his career average of 130 targets per year? It's not impossible, but I'll let somebody else pay the early third-round price to land him.
- Jeff Haseley: Stefon Diggs' fantasy production has always been based on volume. In Buffalo he was the top dog for Josh Allen and his numbers followed suit. He'll have two other prominent receivers getting targets in Houston which will lower his involvement. He also had pedestrian numbers in the second half of last season. He is no longer an elite fantasy option.
- Andy Hicks: Diggs has talked his way out of Minnesota and Buffalo. Winning teams. With a young and hungry team, he could be locker-room poison. Plus, his expectations will be hard to match with a strong group of much younger receivers.
- Corey Spala: Diggs has too much risk at his current WR16 price. Nico Collins and Tank Dell have solidified their talents and roles within the offense.
Reasons Jalen Pitre Could Be a Bust
- Kyle Bellefeuil: After his monster rookie campaign, Pitre disappointed IDP gamers who reached for him in drafts last season. There are better options to target for your first two safety slots in your lineup.
Reasons Dalton Schultz Could Be a Bust
- Phil Alexander: The addition of Diggs means someone has to get their targets squeezed. Nico Collins and Tank Dell will take a bit of a haircut, but Schultz doesn't stand a chance of replicating his counting stats from 2023.
Reasons C.J. Stroud Could Be a Bust
- Jeff Bell: Calling him a bust is not fair simply because his ADP has come in aggressively, but C.J. Stroud is going well before other quarterbacks with an equal, if not higher, ceiling. Stroud has never shown a consistent willingness to add a rushing element (much to the chagrin of Ohio State fans) and needs that or league-leading passing levels to justify an ADP of 49 in Footballguys’ current data.
Reasons No One Could Be a Bust
- Jason Wood: One of the trio of receivers -- Nico Collins, Stefon Diggs, or Tank Dell could finish as a top-12 option, but that requires injuries to beset one or both of the others.
