The goal of dynasty football is to win the championship. If you are trying to win now, trading away an asset like Travis Kelce or George Kittle will not be beneficial. Despite the aging concerns, those tight ends provide immediate production. You could trade away Kelce or Kittle, so long as your backup will help you compete.

If you are trading away an asset while competing, you should trade away an injured or an over-hyped player.
TE to Trade Away - T.J. Hockenson, Minnesota – TE7
Hockenson will miss the start of the season as he tore his ACL in Week 16 of 2023. A typical ACL recovery is nine months. This trajectory will place him around a Week 12 return. Hockenson was likely your TE1 and you will need to replace his production. I would target a rebuilding team in your league and trade them Hockenson. Here are recent trades from MyFantasyLeague’s open API system:
- Hockenson for Dalton Schultz and 2025 first-round selection
- Hockenson for Dalton Schultz and 2.02 rookie selection
- Hockenson for Dalton Schultz and Jonathan Brooks
- Hockenson for George Kittle

TE to trade Away - Cade Otton, Tampa Bay – TE19
Otton has a secure role in the Tampa Bay offense. He had the most offensive snaps at the tight end position in 2023. This resulted in being the 21st most targeted tight end. Trade Otton and acquire any value you can. Here are recent trades:
- Otton for Rashid Shaheed
- Otton for Kimani Vidal and Tyler Conklin
- Otton for Isaiah Likely
TE to Trade Away - Chigoziem Okonkwo, Tennessee – TE24
Okonkwo was a hyped-up tight end who has not panned out. Take the value and run. Coach Brian Callahan said the tight end room will “not be a room dominated by one guy.” If Okonkwo leads the tight ends in targets, he will still be far behind DeAndre Hopkins and Calvin Ridley. I would target a rebuilding team in your league, specifically if they tend to lust over younger players. Here are recent trades:
- Okonkwo for Michael Mayer
- Okonkwo for Curtis Samuel
- Okonkwo for Noah Fant and 3.03 rookie selection
- Okonkwo for 2025 third-round selection
- Happened three times
Discussion
Trading away immediate production does a disservice to your championship push. If you are contending, you should want to win the championship. When trading away assets, it will be important to trade away injured (Hockenson) and over-hyped (Otton, Okonkwo) assets. Trading away a tight end like Hockenson will bring you more value. If you are trading away a young tight end who has not panned out, it may be beneficial to include them in a trade package. It will be harder to make a direct swap for immediate value. You should take an educated assessment of the player you are trading for.
- I prefer the Otton for Likely deal
- Likely’s usage has increased every year
- Baltimore will use 12 personnel
- I prefer the Okonkwo for Samuel deal
- Samuel may lead the Buffalo wide receivers in usage
You should not trade away a tight end for a return of similar doubts or concerns. Acquiring future draft capital is more beneficial. A draft pick will retain the value compared to an asset like Vidal. If Vidal does not see playing time or gets cut, you have lost the trade. You can always utilize the draft capital in a future draft during the season.
