If you are rebuilding your dynasty team, you want to trade away any players likely to see their value drop before you are ready to contend. Since you are playing for 2025 and beyond, you ideally are trying to find a win-win deal with a contender who can benefit from your player’s 2024 fantasy output. The burn rate (dynasty value lost in a single season) is lowest for quarterbacks in general, given how long the careers of the top players can be. Matthew Stafford, LA Rams
It is difficult to predict how many more years Stafford will play. He enters his 16th NFL season in 2024 and has two more years left on his current contract. He is underpaid, with his deal paying just $31M per year of new money for 2025 and 2026. Furthermore, Stafford’s injury history makes him an unlikely candidate to play into his 40s. He has had issues with concussions, tendonitis in his elbow, and a nasty spinal cord injury in 2022.
Assuming he retires soon after his 39th birthday (after the 2026 season), that would mean three more years. This short window makes him the exact sort of player a rebuilding team should be looking to trade. Now is the time. His ADP and dynasty trade value will decline rapidly as he approaches the end of his career.
