Overvalued Players: 2 Cornerbacks to Avoid

Overvalued players can derail your entire season. The Footballguys staff warns of cornerbacks who are overvalued.

Footballguys Staff's Overvalued Players: 2 Cornerbacks to Avoid Footballguys Staff Published 06/10/2024

The flip side of succeeding with undervalued players is failing with overvalued players. They can clog your roster and never seem to match your expectations. Avoiding them is another of the important keys to a successful fantasy team. To point out these players, we asked our staff to identify players available in the top half of your draft who should underperform their draft position. Thanks to the folks at TheIDPShow.com for the ADP.

Cooper DeJean, Philadelphia

Gary Davenport: Don't get me wrong—I like DeJean as a prospect, and the Eagles' secondary should be vastly improved after spending their first two picks on Toledo's Quinyon Mitchell and then DeJean. But taking a cornerback whose rookie role is in no way certain as the No. 3 player at his position is just a terrible idea. Do I think that DeJean will out-point Mitchell in IDP leagues in 2024? Probably. But I'd have to take off my shoes to count the cornerbacks I'd draft ahead of DeJean this season.

Kyle Bellefeuil: DeJean is an exciting dynasty IDP asset. However, drafting him as the CB3 in redraft is asking a lot out of the talented rookie out of Iowa. While we expect DeJean to be a key piece to the Eagles' defense for years to come, there is a chance he doesn't see starter snaps right out of the gate—it'll likely come sooner rather than later, however. I'm tempering early expectations for the rookie until we get more information through the off-season programs.

Tripp Brebner: A fantasy bet on Cooper DeJean is based on expectations that Brian Branch's breakout rookie season is normal. DeJean must first overtake incumbent slot corner Avonte Maddox and then earn reps ahead of the base defense's starting foursome. Several cornerbacks around the league already occupy a full-time inside-outside role. DeJean, as the third cornerback off the board, is an obvious reach.

Sauce Gardner,  NY Jets

Joseph Haggan: Gardner is one of the best cover corners in the NFL. Unfortunately, he's getting to cold shoulder treatment because of it. His ability to be disruptive at the catch point has forced quarterbacks to look elsewhere in the passing game. He was challenged without regard as a rookie, and it was to no avail. Gardner is darn good. There are plenty of cornerbacks I'd look at before Gardner, though, in IDP.

Kyle Bellefeuil: As Joey laid out, Gardner is one of the best corners in the league that teams will look to avoid. This trend is already happening, as he was targetted 73 times as a rookie and 51 times last year in his second season, per Pro Football Focus. I'd prefer to target other weaker corners in IDP drafts that teams aren't afraid to throw at and have more opportunities to fall into production each week.
